I think it was really clever of the show to have there be a sort of nervous undertone to Zox and his family finally getting what they've been after this whole time. Because, you know, obviously there had to be some sort of twist or catch to it. If SD World just showed up after all this time like any other monster of the week to be blown up in a single episode, that'd be weird, right? But if you make that weirdness all part of someone else's master plan... It's an approach I really dig. There were plenty of possible options for this plot point that were probably more obvious, like just leaving it until the absolute end of the show, or maybe having SD World be like some kind of recurring rival character for Twokaiser or something, but as usual with the decisions Zenkaiger makes, the option they went with somehow feels the most Zenkaiger-y to me. Which I know is a really tautological way to put it, but still, I'm digging the mystery of Gege right now, and this was a neat way to advance that. Besides, it's not like making this big event a simple standalone episode is going to be any sort of problem when Zenkaiger knows how to work that format the way it does. I mean, it's got everything that makes one of these good. The monster is menacing the populace with a comical ability. The heroes refuse to be inconvenienced by that and just head into battle anyway doing a weird version of the roll call. (Although I guess at this point it's weirder when it's *not* weird?) Heck, Zox even takes to the field with a straight up gashapon version of his Geardalinger, complete with a squeaky pitched up voice, so this episode is even better than usual when it comes to that sort of joke. Plus, naturally, it's also telling a proper story, all about the pressure Zox puts on himself as the head of his family, and more importantly, how nobody around him is actually asking him to carry all that weight alone. It makes for a nice moment with Kaito that calls way back to Twokaiser's introductory episodes in a way that makes this climactic resolution feel that much more full circle, and nice moments for all of Zox's siblings, who get in on the action in the ways that work best for them. Last week I praised the Zenkaigers for their ability to think their way of any situation so quickly, but I have to say, it's every bit as impressive how quickly Flint can invent a solution to a given problem. Small Gears! It's so simple it couldn't fail, and it didn't! A lot of the extra dramatic staging with the rain and all that was fantastic visually, too. Even a pirate who mostly sails between worlds is still a pirate at the end of the day, so the emphasis on water felt super appropriate. Really added a lot of flair to the episode.

No better place than this episode for me to get this out there, but I've thought this since the very first time the pirates explained their backstory. I never liked this plot point and was always kinda dreading it coming up? I don't like that the two little talking mascots characters are actually two regular people who have a terrible place cursed on them, and their family's only goal is to restore them to normal.
Unless I go out of my way to push that out of my mind, it adds a weird undercurrent to every scene Ricky and Cuttaner have throughout the show of just floating around and being cute or funny. Not to mentoin I really like the whole gimmick they have being Twokaiser's form changes and turning into Twokai-Oh, and so I prefer thinking of all that as just how they work, as opposed to them making the best of their 'curse'. I realise this would just kill the entire plot thread, but I kinda hope that when the Goldtweakers inevitably come back for the finale, they'll have just changed their minds about the whole thing. (Or perhaps, it'll be a classic Ben Grimm thing where they give up the chance to become human at the last second to help out their friends! :O) Also while I'm on the topic of Ricky and Cutanner, they've always fallen into the background even though I always thought it would have been fairly easy for that to not be the case. A lot of the personality of the Kikanoids that comes through in individual episodes is just them showcasing their personalities in mech fights or their numerous improvised lines in scenes. Ricky and Cutanner certainly have those too in spots, but always to a waaaay limited degree in comparison. Really could have helped if they got to banter while in Ohren or Shinken form, or if during mech fights they actually conversed with Zox and commented on what was going on like everyone else does. Anyhow, as for this episode, it was fun and good as always. I totally bought into the drama and intesity of all the framing with Zox's fight against SD World, despite the enemy looking like... that. The moment of his family coming through for him might be a standard sort of resolution, but it's a really good and heartwarming one. Although just one nitpick, but you're already having a big all-cg fight this episode, so why not bring in Super TwokaiOh while they're at it, the mech that's all of the Goldtweakers merging with their ship at once?! |

I think now would be a good time for one more Gear statistics update before the finale.
The single most popular Gear is Dairanger, having been used twice in the Geartlinger and once in the Geardalinger. I'm not really a Dairanger fan, but I'll give my sincere congratulations to those who are! Tied for second place are Sun Vulcan, Jetman, Hurricanger, Goseiger, Zyuohger, Kyuranger and Kiramager. JAKQ, Gingaman, Abaranger, Gekiranger and Go-Onger have yet to be used in the Geartlinger. Quote:

Here's the thing, we have about 5 episodes left, and it feels like we haven't been building up to some sort of climax, and next episode is a regular MOTW episode, so that means there'd be 4 episodes left to wrap up the show.
I mean sure, we wrapped up a long running plotline, but I felt it should've have had a bigger impact, like make it a two parter instead of a regular MOTW episode, like in the same vein as the Hakaizer conclusion. |

This episode is technically are Denziman Tribute Episode because:
- The SD World's head design is based on DaiDenzin. - The SD World are voiced by Naoya Uchida who previously portrayed Denzi Green. Last edited by Blade Fang; 01-25-2022 at 12:17 AM.. |
