Once again, Tametomo proves that he is an excellent tactical leader for the team.

I really want to like this show at 100% again. But I just can’t when it keeps doing episodes like this.
Quite a few abilities used (like Mabushiina’s ability to make gems shine brighter and the Kiramagers having a zoom and enhance function) just seem like, they came out of nowhere just so they could be used for this episode. How the hell did Kiba Basra make his appearance? It’s been established (and otherwise kept consistent) that Jamenju can’t appear unless enough Yami energy has been gathered. The final showdown with Shadon felt like such a blatant copy of the Magiranger episode that I’m surprised they weren’t playing Dangan! Shooting Star during the scene. Aside from the mech battle, this really didn’t feel like a late game episode so much as a mid season filler. Shadon was wasted and the synopsis and production details for the next two episodes don’t inspire much confidence. That said, I did like Shadon’s use of shadows as a gimmick… which just makes me annoyed that they haven’t played up Yodonheim’s ‘darkness’ gimmick other than this episode. |

The Kiramei Vision ability was definitely shown in previous episodes before.

That felt weirdly rushed, this is still one of my favorite sentai in years, but this episode felt extremely rushed.
Why build up Shadon only to get rid of him in one episode ? He could easily have stayed for a few and then be murdered. |

You know, once upon a time, there was a very cool and smart Yellow on a Sentai team who had to use his sharpshooter skills to save the team from a deadly sniper monster. I don't really remember much about those episodes of Magiranger besides thinking they were pretty much the greatest thing ever. It's not exactly a plot I'm going to complain they're reusing, is what I'm getting at, here.
In terms of premise and structure, I think it's ideal for a Sentai episode. A singular imposing foe who doesn't simply match the team with brawn, but by sowing fear and confusion among the group, truly putting their ability to coordinate and work together to the test. It's great. I loved every second of that in this episode, and that's what nearly every second of this episode is. One big winning recipe. An action thriller movie that casts aside big emotional moments and wild creativity for raw, unadulterated suspense, and I think they completely nailed that here. It's a style of writing a conflict I'm super into, where it's all about this chain of logical reactions from the heroes and villains, each making moves to counter the other at every turn. That's the big thing that made it work for me so well, I think. I got the impression Shadon and the Kiramagers were always making the most sensible decisions at every point. In an episode like this, if I'm staring at the screen like it's some tropey horror movie thinking "ughh, don't go in THERE, guys..." or whatever, it all falls apart. Same deal if the central villain ever comes off as taking too many chances. But Shadon really puts the pressure on the team here, and the way they keep trying to make his tactics work against him is similarly cunning, even though things obviously aren't going great for them for a while. It's all okay when they have Tametomo watching their back, though. Yeah, anyone who's seen my posts about any episode of Kiramager that heavily features Tametomo probably isn't surprised I loved this one. It's no secret I adore those tactical e-sports chops of his, and he is seriously taking control this time around. What might be actually be my favorite thing about it, putting some thought into it, is that his usual sharpshooter skills end up being completely irrelevant to how he saves the day? Like, of course he busts Shadon's scope from like a mile away, because of course he does, but that's basically at the start of the episode, and he ends up getting the most use of that sword, surprisingly enough. His contribution here is all down to him using his brain to quickly assess a situation and formulate plans, and those beats are what I never get tired of from Tametomo. Even just little moments like him figuring out Mabusheena isn't Shadon's target are awesome. And this episode is awesome, too! Really absorbing and tense the whole way through, and it even still manages to land back on the classic Kiramager move at the end – showering a person you care about with positive reinforcement. Great script from Kaori Kaneko, although if I could express one bit of concern, I have to wonder if that shot of the villains in the opening that was clearly leaving space for one more guy is ever going to be filled now that Shadon is apparently a one-and-done deal. That negative space next to Yodonna is really bothering me! Ah well, probably best not to worry about it. Hard to get too upset at an episode when it puts this much of a spotlight on my favorite Kiramager.

Assassination attempts on every Super Sentai teams is not new. And you're right: Rui Kihara's "Dangan (Bullet) Shooting Star" song wasn't played in any musical form. So, what if all of the Kiramagers are physically killed in the endgame episodes? (Please, don't let it happen or it'll be a cliffhanger like Kamen Rider 01/Zero-One!) Well, Hiroya Matsumoto will surely be proud of his Yellow Super Sentai Junior Actor Rui because he enjoyed watching the 2020 Super Sentai Series after he briefly appeared as an ice drop vendor in Episode 35. After all, it's MagiRanger Stage 37 all over again! How I wished Tametomo Imizu should've been a legitimate leader of the Kiramagers because he came first in Episode Zero. Anyway, Shadon is the Kiramager Villain version of MagiRanger's Hades God Titan, TimeRanger's Sniper Reihou and JetMan's Sniper Cat. Even though Shadon was for now killed, Emperor Yodon wants vendetta against the Kiramagers and the endgame keeps on rolling. Compared to other Yellow Super Sentai Heroes and Heroines, Tametomo may be smarter than either Jun Kiyama/DenziYellow or Seikai/Ninja Yellow, but his shooting tactics may be unrivaled except Luka Millfy/GokaiYellow, Chisato Jougasaki/MegaYellow and Shunsuke Hino/Yellow Turbo, who are better shooters than him.

I really enjoyed this episode, I thought it was a really novel approach, and I liked the tension and the resolve. Whilst I'm surprised that Shadon doesn't appear to be coming back, I thought he was a really interesting character with a solid design. The set up reminded me a lot of older shows, to be honest—I could well imagine this playing out as a Liveman episode.
My sole complaint here is that there was not enough Yodonna. |

So now Tame has officially had a rivalry with both of Emperor Yodon's personae. Usually rival types are more interested in Reds, so I like it when other colors get that kind of relationship with a villain. Juru still has his rivalry with Garza anyway. Something this show is great at is making sure everybody gets their chance to shine.
I guess Shadon can hang out with Jagged and Uden in the Generals Destroyed In One Episode Club. Poor guy.
