I feel a little silly asking this, but where would somebody who is interested in checking out Kamen Rider get started? It looks like there are a lot of different iterations, and probably different continuities. My knowledge here is slim to none- I vaguely recall watching an attempt at an Americanized version of it (might have been something else entirely?) and I've seen lots of really cool toys... and that's about it.

If you want to start at the beginning, check out this thread. KITsubs has begun fansubbing the original Kamen Rider, and you can't go wrong starting at the very beginning!

Most series are independent of each other, though the entire Showa Era is connected and Agito is a sequel to Kuuga in that it takes place in the same universe. Otherwise just start with whatever looks interesting. Personally, I recommend starting with Double/W, it's a near universally loved series and with good reason. Just don't let the bad CGI in the first 2 episodes turn you off.

Everything past Agito is it's own continuity (Though, movies from Kiva onward crossover with other Rider series, Den-O especially).
Starting points I would recommend would be: Kamen Rider (The first series. It's subber is a member of this forum) Black (It's a really awesome series. I personally haven't finished it yet, but I have enjoyed what I've seen) Den-O (Solely because it's crossed over with damn near every series to come after it) Decade (It gives you a taste of each series. Be careful though, because it does spoil some of the larger plot points in some series) Double/W (It's an excellent series. Poor CGI bugs it down during the first couple episodes, but it improves exponentially afterwards) Fourze (The current Rider series. You can discover what goes on with all of us!) There are some good things to be said about Blade (Which apparently has a poor start), Hibiki (Which apparently has a gawd awful end), Faiz (Which has great designs, but convoluted story), Kuuga (Which is apparently freaking awesome), and Kabuto (Which as a dull, possibly boring main character). But I think the 6 suggestions I gave are some good starting points. |

Hibiki has a decent ending, provided you stop watching after episode 29.
Any Rider show can serve as a good introduction to the franchise. They all mostly stand on their own, even the ones that are direct or indirect sequels. I'd say go with whatever design you think looks interesting and try out that series. If it draws you in, keep going. If not, try something else. Matrixbeast hit a lot of the more popularly recommended first series, though, although I'd add Kuuga and Agito to that list as good starting points. |

Going with the first suggestion first, 1-12 of the original are downloading; should be ready tomorrow
I also did a quick video search for a couple of the newer ones Matrixbeast suggested (W, Fourze, and Black) to get a glimpse of what they're like... they all seem so different from each other- could be due to such a limited view though. |
