Figured since the latest Garo Movie is out that I'd end up reviving this thread. Surprisingly the wait for subs was easier this time since the movie had a home release on the 18th. Turns out the home release had English Subtitles so now a torrent is just out and about.
So as a result last night I watched Garo Moonbow Traveler. This'll be a fairly vague and non-spoilery type ramble. But... I absolutely adored it! I've always sorta preferred the Saejima-verse version of Garo in comparison to the Ryuga-verse version, and given Makai Senki and Makai no Hana are like my top 2 in terms of Garo Shows, this movie did a lot for me. The music is really nice, the main theme of sorts for the background music that was heard in the trailers is just, real nice to listen to. But then you've just got all these returning themes for certain scenes and they really just help pack a beautiful punch if you've watched all of the Saejima Timeline Shows and Movies. Like there's one moment, where the music kicks into one specific theme that had me just cheering the whole time. The movie is also just nice aesthetically, the first half is very whimsical and mysterious and the little twists they pull are nice, some are obvious, others not as much. Of course though, the action like always is greatly on point. And just all the references to everything, certain lines being said towards the end that almost quote word for word from stuff like Chapter of the Black Wolf. All the little cameos, references, surprise appearances in characters I did not expect. Not to mention the side characters all get some nice little moments in this movie, Crow gets some real MvP Moments, I enjoyed Mayuri a lot in this movie and I kinda dig what they have her doing here, and Gonza had a real nice moment in the later half. Also that final battle, one I was not expecting them to pull out a reference to one certain thing. But also, just the way the final battle was handled, especially the final, final finisher against our big bad, was just handled so well. Teared up a little at the end too when they started connecting stuff together. Overall, fantastic movie, while I'm not sure where it ranks yet, I'd definitely put it in my Top 3 Garo Flicks for sure, the other two being Lament of the Dark Dragon and Divine Flame. |

One word... Awesome If this was the final chapter in the Saejima-verse storyline. I was 100% satisfied.

Man, that movie was so good. For how long it took to get made (Makai no Hana was 2014 and the idea of a Raiga/Mayuri movie has been kicking around since it ended) it was definitely worth the wait. It does feel a little like two separate films knit together in the middle, but it still works really well. The first half is Garo going full weird, with some of the most bizarre imagery the series has ever pulled off. The second half is more grounded with a bunch of emotional moments and wire-work fight scenes. I love both halves equally. It really does feel like the end of the Saejimas' story and on that front it's very emotionally satisfying - there was a late hour cameo that absolutely brought some tears to my eyes. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rei or Rekka again, but I think we're done with this family and it all ended on a really high note.

Yeah the only thing that can possibly top the movie is if Kouga finally teams up with Ryuga.
But I wouldn't mind if this is Kouga's last appearance.

Sooo Garo Versus Road Episode 1: Wowie
This is so different, yet so familiar in a sense. Given how Moonbow Traveler ended, I don't really blame them for trying to find some way to do Garo a whole lot more differently than before. I mean, it's hard to top standard Garo entertainment like what we got with that movie. So the premise does end up sounding interesting, plus I keep hearing a lot of people say that it seems partially inspired by Vanishing Line, which I still need to finish, only got up to Episode 3. It's nice how we do get into like the main bulk of it immediately and to give us a breather from all the panic we get some flashbacks to see how we got here. Seeing Garo PS2 as a fighting game is surprising, though from the trailer I saw of it, it did seem to have a 2 player versus component so that kinda makes sense. Also one thing I do actually like a lot, these Techno Basic Horror's we've got, it's been a while since the basic horror's have been a threat. Most days they seem to be common enemy fodder, so pushing them in with a bunch of people who have no idea on how to defend themselves against them, makes them a lot more scarier than they were previously. It is nice though that it isn't just a "All Gamers are trapped" sorta deal, you've got what looks like mob members, general unruly punks, and just people from all walks of life that got stuck in this hellhole of a online game. Two random things to take away from this for me though, was not expecting that YTuber dude to namedrop Jurassic Park like that. Also I'm suddenly craving waffle burgers thanks to that flashback scene of our main protag at the restaurant. Needless to say, I am intrigued. |

I'm not sure what I think yet. I'm not an anime fan, but I know enough about where the genre that I recognize exactly what the show is doing. From that perspective, there's nothing here that feels very original, even for someone who's never watched the dozens and dozens of isekai that dominated the last decade of anime. We've got some generic stock characters and... and that's about it, so far, from a story perspective.
The show looks pretty good so far, though. The action scenes were nicely handled and I'm kind of digging the more "cyber" redesigns of the Garo and generic Horror suit. So far it's mostly just dudes fighting each other, though. I'm sure we'll get something more Garo-y eventually, but it looks like the show's going to be more of a slow burn. I didn't dislike it, don't get me wrong. I just wasn't especially wowed. But at least there's no Jinga (so far). |

I still prefer the chivalrous kind of GARO, but I really liked this first ep.
nothing new, but the fight scenes are awesome. Im not a huge fan of the "close to the actors shaky cam" but everything else is really good. |
