It seems to be the trend currently to make individual watch threads when someone watches a show, so I want to be one of the cool kids and do that too. It's Gingaman time! If you know me, you know I have a pretty rocky relationship with tokusatsu writer Yasuko Kobayashi. The closest I have come to liking one of her shows is liking some aspects of Kamen Rider Ryuki. I've heard a good deal of people say they prefer her Sentai to her Rider however, so I'm hoping to see a wonderful showing from her this time around.
Anyways, more to the point, I've watched the first two episodes, and *wow* this is uh... definitely a show. I'm not sure what exactly I was expecting, but it wasn't even close to magical forest cowboys with powers called "Earth" riding on space monsters to fight alien pirates. It kind of feels like Zyuranger on crack so far. I have to give an extra shoutout to how overdesigned the monsters are in this show, even by Sentai standards. Obviously I am still early on, so I don't have a strong opinion yet, but it certainly made an impression on me, for better or for worse.

I sympathise with your opinions on Kobayashi. Heck, when I went into this show again recently, I’d developed a similar antipathy to the producer, Shigenori Taketera, given that his other major Sentai series (Carranger) just wasn’t funny or memorable and I found his Rider contributions more boring than entertaining.* But I felt this show was actually as good as I remembered it (it was the second Sentai I dedicated myself to watching, after Kakuranger). It’s a show where every character has something of a designated plot for their focus episodes (blue tries to win over a school teacher, green has a fight with the female villain, pink breaks her ankle), but that just makes it easy to tell them apart as characters.

I'm through episode 7 now. I sort of feel like this show tries to lay on the drama too thick, too soon. The whole Starbeasts dying and coming back thing could have been really cool... later on. The Silver forms are also expected, but sort of disappointing, since I think some kind of weird chimeric organic combined form would be more unique. Maybe later... Up next, it looks like Hikaru is getting a second focus episode before Saya even gets one. Poor girl!

I've watched through episode 12 now. I think I am settling into the groove with this show. It is pretty fun, but also not particularly grabbing me. It definitely feels like a back to basics approach compared to the last few shows before it. Just some random thoughts:

Episode 15: Okay, I am definitely finding myself enjoying the goofier episodes of this show more than the serious ones. Hikaru eating a time bomb instead of cold medicine and then having to drink magical water before he hiccups 100 times and EXPLODES is the exact kind of nonsense I enjoy from Sentai.

Up through episode 19: Okay now *know* this is a Kobayashi show with BullBlack around. This dude is just a marginally less edgy Ren from Ryuki. He could turn out interesting if the cards are played right though. The cast as a whole is definitely a strong point in this show, I find them all quite enjoyable, and they bounce off each other well. I think my favorite episode out of this batch has to be the one where the previous owner comes back to the riding club and bullies the heck out of the characters. Hayate proved to be a class act there, as always.

That's great you managed to get to the first few episodes that featured BullBlack since his introduction and the story arc involving him is where Gingaman actually picks up for me story-wise.

I like Hyuuga except for this one subplot that happens near the end, trying not to spoil it or be too negative but it is all alright by the final episode. I get the impression like in the 90s a couple of extra warriors still seem like a kind of afterthought or don't change much (which makes sense given it was early days) as opposed to in the 00s they seemed a bit more involved for me.

Oh, huh, I didn't realize Taketera did any Sentai. I find him a mixed bag as a producer personally. Definitely like his Sentai better than his Rider though, I liked both Carranger and Megaranger. Kuuga was alright.
I watched a third episode yesterday, I like Gouki, he's a good kid. |
