Oh, the fusion gimmick again. Lovely. At least we had one season without it for once. It could've stayed that way as far as I'm concerned.
Especially since the suits bear little to no resemblance to their individual components. Like, who's looking at Beta Smash and immediately thinks: "Oh yes, of course, Taro, Ace and the original Ultraman!“. Instead everyone rightfully thinks its the lovechild of Ultraman Zearth and Redman. Gamma Future is way too busy to make anything out except Tiga because of the purple, and Alpha Edge just looks like a worse version of the base suit. And Geed - oh no. What's this even supposed to be? A combination of Ginga, X and Orb? How? None of this makes me think of those characters, and without the obvious Geed head poking out of it I wouldn’t even guess it's supposed to be an Ultraman. So the suits - not a fan so far, at all. Massive step-down form Taiga. That being said - if the show is only half as good as Taiga it's still going to be the best Toku show on air this year. Ultraman is on an absolute roll the past years. R/B was a bit rough, but aside from that? All of the shows were awesome. If Z can deliver on that front and give us gorgeous miniature work, effects and action scenes with lovable characters in between, then it doesn't matter much how the suits look. Or rather, I will grow to love them regardless. Plus, Geed is in this, that’s fantastic! Also, even though the gimmick is uninspired, the Ultra Z Riser is actually kind of cool. How it moves the trinkets through the scanning area. And the voice of it is quite nice as well. All in all I'm very much looking forward to this, just because its Ultraman and Ultraman rules. |

Anyway, my first impression of every single one of these new suits is actually not good. Again, it just doesn't feel like they're conveying anything, even if they look fine. And seeing what they've done with Geed, I'm not even sure how well they're hitting the "looks fine" part here.

See, I remember less and less things about R/B as time passes by and it's better this way. It wasn’t a bad show, just – really not that good compared to what came before it. And after.

These suits look fun, granted it looks less like fusing and more like accessing the powers of the ultra's like with R/B except it's tripling it this time. Also because I'm catching that they specifically don't use fusing but powers. Especially given the naming system too.
Like the Ultra Powers are just there because they need Ultra Powers to sell the toys and they designed the forms around having their own identities with bits and pieces of the component Ultra's afterwards. Beta Smash is probably my favorite though, seems they realized Titas was a king and wanted to bring in more wrestling into Ultra. Also that trailer was really cool, the fact that you get to see Zett running alongside Sevengar (Surprising return!) and Windom is absolutely cool! The idea that our Team this year has full on robots to defend the city is really great. https://ultramangalaxy.com/new-ultraman-z-tv-series-revelations/ Ultraman Galaxy also has an article discussing the new stuff, interesting stuff in all honestly. The most important takeaway here is Masaki Endoh is finally fulfilling his big dream of getting to sing the opening them for an Ultra series! I'm sure the OP is gonna be a banger with him around. |

Seriously though I'm not feeling Geed. It's like he decided to wear a winter jacket and call it a day. It's also because it feels like it's just Primitive wearing a spacesuit, whereas the Fusion Rises are extremely unique.
Next year is 55th annibersary so it's likely going to be fusion too. Part of me wishes that Ultraman takes some risk in new gimmicks/themes, but Kamen Rider didnthat with Ryuki and while they became a giant success, it effectively killed the 'Karate Bugman' aspect of the show.

Yeah, that picture of Geed isn't particularly flattering. It's like he's a wearing a suit but he hasn't put the head on yet. It's cool that he's in the show though!
Z's forms though? Alpha Edge is like a worse version of his regular look. It's weird. It's ok... but it's weird. Beta Smash is awesome holy crap. He's totally Redman. Gamma Future is cool but not as cool as Beta Smash. Overall, I like them a lot. Pretty excited about a Masaki Endoh opening as well. |

I dunno I gotta disagree, I think it's great given its context. It's got the color scheme of Zero-sensei(I hope this catches on ), bits of Seven sprinkled around it, and oozes Leo's karate swagger. It's the perfect tribute to the Ultraseven legacy if ya ask me, and why I am stoked to see it in action.

Personally, I like the Zett forms and I don't mind that they're fusions again. Is it a little overused now? Yeah maybe. But part of what I like about the fusion designs is the fact that they aren't very emblematic of what Ultras they are a fusion of. Like yeah sure, there are some similar design traits, like the twin sluggers on Alpha Edge, or the chest armors on Beta Smash and Gamma Future. But for the most part, you probably wouldn't know that these were fusion designs unless you were told so.
And honestly, that was kinda how I felt most fusion Ultra designs were like, well at least pre New-Gen fusion designs that is. I mean you look at designs like Legend, Mebius Infinity or Saga. Those designs aren't very emblematic that they were fusions. Now obviously, that design mentality has changed a bit in recent years for some series, most especially Orb, but I don't think it's a design mentality that all future series will follow. Also I just realized that all of Zetts fusions form names start with a greek alphabet, so I'm guessing that means the final form may have Zeta. Last edited by Byg42; 04-18-2020 at 09:45 PM.. |
