I'm happy for the people that are excited for her and I hope she is given the writing quality Calpaldi was screwed out of to make them happy.
For me, I'm burnt out on the show after the last 4 seasons ended up leaving a more "meh" taste in my mouth than I initially thought they did. As such, I had already decided that I would be taking off from watching the next season as it aired and just watched it at a later time regardless of who was chosen. Now for the doctor being a female, I feel like this was the safest choice. Or rather, this actrress was the safest choice. Why not go with a woman Capaldi's age? Do a woman that is not the age where males are only going to watch it because, "She's pretty." I also feel like completely changes the character and the show's history. The Doctor is meant to be a fatherly figure (sometimes even a grandfatherly one), so there is more to the character that makes the gender matter. It is one of his traits that defines his character. Would you want to see Scrooge changed to a woman? What about Alex in A Clockwork Orange? Then there are female characters that are the same that wouldn't work if they were changed into a male character. Wonder Woman, for example. What if they turned June Cleaver into some buff 19 year old? If they needed to do a female Doctor type show, why not give River her own show? Why not do a show about a different Time Lord? Why change a character who has been a male for over 50 years? Well whatever. I'm done. Good luck and good night. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequ...ermaphroditism Not to mention the fact that all past regenerations have varied significantly between each other. So given the physiological make up of the species, this barely matters and if the writers are smart, they won't make it matter. Because making it matter is a one-way ticket to a ham-fisted soapbox. |

So, who’s everyone’s favourite Doctor?

I'll freely admit I wasn't all that warm to the idea of a female Doctor initially but you know what? I've loved this show my entire life and nothing is ever going to change that. It's been in desperate need of a shake up for years and I hope this is exactly what it needs to find it's footing again. Gender won't matter as long as the writing is good (the whole "writers room approach Chibnall wants to take concerns me a bit but that's a whole other argument) so what's left to do except embrace it with an open mind. As I said in my previous post the amount this means to people is insumoutable, and if the show is bringing that much joy to people then it's still doing what it set out to do.
It's a new era for Doctor Who. It's that moment Hartnell regenerated into Troughton for new generation, plus so much more. To not welcome it or want to be a part of it would be foolish.

I dont see that happening, since the series finale ends with the 12th doctor refusing to accept "death" and regenerate, so committing suicide would be kind of hypocritical. Plus if the Christmas special deals with him accepting that his time has come, it'd be a big smack to the face to viewers if he ends up killing himself after coming to terms with it. Plus he's still currently regenerating so if he kills himself, he would die permanently. Also, the General from Day of the Doctor and Hell Bent was killed by the Doctor and regenerated into a female incarnation. SO the whole "committing suicide leads to regenerating into the opposite sex" thing from big finish wouldnt really work with the series canon now.

It seems more likely to me that the episode will end with the Doctor embracing change more than ever, and that's what will trigger it.

I think the best way to do this would be to not make a big deal ot of it. He's mentioned that "he could be anything" before, so why not a female form? (Also, the hero outright comitting full-blown suicide on Christmas probably wouldn't blow over well)

Based on the small portion of what I have seen throughout the years, I always think the 11th doctor played by Matt Smith is the first person that comes to mind when I think Doctor Who. Probably because I was exposed to Doctor Who the most when he was on.
