Hi, Burakku Gaijin, he just started watching last year (maybe around the time he turned 7 or immediately after). He doesn't have much trouble reading the subtitles most of the time. We've seen (in their entirety) Gokaiger, Den-O, and Fourze. He's also seen the two Super Taisen movies, most of Gaim, bits of Toqger, Go-Busters, Decade, etc. Probably the biggest issue is that I have to warn him that he can't use the word "bastard" (or "bitch") in public.
Thanks for the info... I have a child coming later this year I hope I can introduce her to nerd culture at a young age. |

And HenshinTrouble, it's nice to see that you are watching Sentai with your son! I was his age when I first started watching Sentai. Personally I recommend Boukenger and Go-Onger, as those were 2 series that I saw parts of when I was his age and younger and maybe those can have a similar appeal to him too.

I have a 2-year-old daughter. To my wife's faux-dismay, our little girl has been babble-singing along to the themes for Abaranger, Boukenger, and Gokaiger. She also likes "Hero Getter" and can babble-sing bits and pieces until the Sun Vulcan line. She plays with Ranger Keys (and can distinguish between how Rangers look from Riders), knows to say "Henshin!" when playing with her brother's belts, and recently got into my FMCS figures and my son's now-broken Samurai and Legendary Megazords. I'm so thrilled about all this!

Regarding the TVNihon and profanity issue:
The flashy effects in TVN subs were a little helpful in getting my son to not just watch toku for the (admittedly amazing) visuals. I'm partial to that myself, for the entertainment value. That said, I am curious about whether I should go look for other sub groups. Overtime, maybe? Something else? As for profanity, I do agree that it's better for my son to be exposed to it alongside parental guidance. I don't always censor myself in front of him, actually, and sometimes use the word "shit" in a non-offensive way with him ("Do you need to take a shit, son?" and not "Cut that shit out!"). He is, for better or for worse, exposed to words like "dick" and "fuck," but he doesn't know them in the biological context. As far as he knows, "dick" is just a really bad substitute word for "jerk" and "fuck" is a word that's so bad he'll have to wait until he's older to know what it actually means. |

Unlike me, he's not that interested in Boukenger in particular yet (generally interested though, given as it's Super Sentai and he likes the theme song), but he's actually the one who decided we should try to get into Go-Onger sometime soon. He loves that as much as Toqger (he's a big train fan and loved seeing Travelion in the Magiranger movie and we did watch Den-O in its entirety).
Boukenger's more hit or miss, but he'll probably enjoy it when you get to watch it.

I hated Go-Onger when it first came out, but the show has become more tolerable after seeing what came after it.

I just want to say here (because it popped up in conversation on this thread) that part of what drew me to toku was the chance to share stories with my son that were about hope and, well, protecting smiles. Two pieces online elaborate on this quite well.
This one is written by an Anglican minister. Don't let that turn you off from reading the piece; if you aren't inclined towards religion, just skip the last paragraph. Before all that, it's just a pretty nice elaboration on why "protecting smiles" seems so important. And then there's Chris Sims on Power Rangers: RPM (where he talks about how he loves it for being dark but not cynical) and on Kamen Rider Fourze. Both work well as companion pieces to each other, I think, and also explain what I got when I was younger and what I think kids today need from their entertainment as well. |

OH GOD IT'S BACK. The Bird from Winspector is in ep. 32 of Dairanger...and it's carrying off a phone booth.
