Been wanting to make this thread for a minute, lol. Just wondering, why are you into toku? What's ONE thing about toku that really draws you to the genre that really stands out and speaks to you? It could be anything from the music, the actors/actresses, the quality of story, etc.

The special effects. I always loved that everything (or most these days) you see on screen is actually there, it's actually happening. Of course, there's tricks and turns to it but they also require physical effects.
As a kid, I was drawn to the Godzilla because I was really into dinosaurs and seeing a big one trash cities and fight other monsters was badass. I always looked through the TV magazines in order to find them when they were aired which only happened rarely. I never cared much for Power Rangers when that became a thing as I found it too dumb, so I only had a soft spot for Godzilla until 3 years ago when I was introduced to Kamen Rider. I initially enjoyed it for the same reason as Godzilla, the action was actually happening on screen, but I liked that it was happening in scale so they could use real locations instead of miniature cities. And while it also featured armored heroes it was a bit more serious and less reliant on tropes than Power Rangers/Sentai so that had me interested. And watching it made me really invested in what was going on so I kept going. I think for me Toku is just something nostalgic that I can go back to every time without being bored and since they're making new shows every year too it never gets too stale. And there's so much more than just Rider as well, I found Ultraman later (which makes sense for me to like since it's rather similar to Godzilla in that it's also giants fighting) and even got a bit into Sentai. So I first came to it for the suits and the action but stayed for the rest Last edited by Kiwami; 12-27-2017 at 03:08 AM.. |

My reasons:
1 - Just like Kiwami, I love Godzilla as a little kid because I was really into dinosaurs. I love the rubber suits and miniatures in those movies. I love all of the work that is put into these movies and they are nowhere as cheep as people make it out to be. The suits and miniatures in Toku will always be the thing that drags me into Toku. 2 - The cool monster designs. I always love how Japan make really cool and awesome looking monsters. I even love the strange looking monsters too. In my opinion, America always makes boring looking monsters and always come off as lame looking (As seen with the MUTOs in Godzilla 2014). Even in anime, you still get really cool monsters too. Japan knows how to make awesome looking monsters. 3 - The fight choreography in Kamen Rider, Sentai and Ultraman is always great too 4 - I like the themes in the stories that Toku shows have. The original Kamen Rider in the 70's dealt with themes of evil vs. evil and not losing your humanity. I felt like Android Kikaider did a better job on the robot pinocchio story than Steven Spielberg's A.I movie in my opinion. 5 - There is more to Toku than just superheroes and giant monsters. Toku can have WW2 movies from Eiji Tsuburaya, horror films, space opera and so much more. Anyone who thinks Toku is just Sentai and Kamen Rider, should check out other Japanese special effect films and TV shows.

Hero suits, they usually have enough flashyness to catch my eye

I like the costumes. Like I just love all the different designs used for heroes, monsters, villains, etc and how they render them in, well, the costumes like I said. I ain't even talking about like full on suits, even stuff like regular costumes where you can still see the actor playing them.
(Also I'm gay and I like cute girls and toku has a lot of cute girls)

I first got into Power Rangers as a kid because of all the flashy special effects and the fight scenes. Basically I was really into everything that happened from the moment they morph onwards including all the fancy posing and shouting that goes on.
I did grow out of it eventually after it got a bit stale for my liking and I had moved on to Pokemon somewhat, but came back to the genre this year because of the Power Rangers film that came out and after hearing that the show I loved as a kid was actually an adaptation of a show that originated in Japan several years prior on the internet (something that I suspected was the case after realising that Saban had actually just been responsible for dubbing Digimon and that it was actually made in Japan so it was the natural conclusion I made regarding all the Saban shows I was watching when young) I finally bit the bullet and decided to watch Sentai as it was airing. This ended up extending to Kamen Rider which ended up appealing to me more from a whole storyline perspective, ESPECIALLY after marathoning Gaim. That said, I still love all the posing and transformation sequences, and as an adult I have spotted the themes and how the designs of all these suits actually related to the themes, something I never really gave much thought to until the last few years.

I've always liked the fight choreography. When I was little that and the Megazords of Power Rangers drew me into the franchise. It was one of the reasons I started taking martial arts really. But as I got older I lost interest in Power Rangers and they've gradually decreased the amount of fist fighting to promote more toys of the weapons. Then I found Kamen Rider which was more mature in some ways and had easier to follow fights since it's mostly just the one Rider. While not every season has great choreography *cough*Wizard*cough* a lot of the older ones do.
