Mikazuki was one dimensional the entire way through, so that's a flaw of the series as whole.

Did it though? Everyone presumed it would go somewhere (myself included) but I don't honestly think there was all that much that suggested it other than a lingering thought of "oh this character can't be this horribly flat". He was just a boring lapdog the entire way through. The whole paralysis thing was just as much development as he got in season one, and that didn't really go anywhere either.
It was everyone else that was worth giving a damn about.

It was everyone else that was worth giving a damn about. Season 2 didn't even try to have him develop then there was the stuff about Mcgillis' background which I felt were completely unnecessary and only got added for the edge factor. |

I agree with your assessment of McGillis for sure. Seemed especially unnecessary since they were already doing a relatively similar thing with Atra.
Don't get me wrong season 2 still had a good number of flaws, but I much preferred its nihilistic, "everyone is mortally ambiguous" approach to the "Rooting for Tekkadan the underdogs" approach of the first season. It was refreshing to see such lasting consequences to the main cast, and stuff like Rustal in the epilogue were an interesting talking point. It's certainly divisive, but I think the people crying "but he was the bad guy!" are kinda missing the point.

Outside of flat characterization and possibly unnecessary edginess in spots my dislike for IBO is probably simply because it's not my kind of show kind of like Game of Thrones or Code Geass. |

When does IBO finish? I might go back and watch it again once this season is over.

I can't say Mika was one dimensional though, when his purpose was to be Orga's trigger. That scene towards the end when McGillis is trying to get Mika to state his own feelings on matters and him costantly responding with, "I will do whatever Orga orders me to" gave the boy a lot of depth. Yeah, if you just look at the top layer you will not think anything of it, but that scene had A LOT of layers to it.
I actually found it funny that Rustal did exactly what McGillis wanted to do, just that he did it the legal way. It's funny that you brought up Code Geass Yellow, because that was another show I felt struggled in the first half of its second season before giving us a strong second half. I feel bad for McGillis. The man was pretty much Griffith 2.0 with elements of Char mixed in, and like Griffith, he totally got screwed (in more ways than one). In the end, IBO was hands down the best Gundam show we have had since 00. It was nice to see something fully refreshing done even if it did not always work. All of the characters were great and it knew which ones you needed to hate and which ones you needed to love. |

I'm still not sure what more they can do to the Zeon/Federation story.
