Well if trying to cut corners is the reason all to save money I stand by my decision to drop Power Dangers.

I’m sorry but this is honestly a rather dumb reason to drop on watching Power Rangers. I don’t see why PR shouldn’t have some liberties taken with their seasons and be unfairly compared to their original Sentai counterparts. I find that judging both franchises under their own merits with their respective seasons to be much more preferable. Same goes with Kamen Rider Ryuki and Kamen Rider Dragon Knight as well as Gridman and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad.

If I wanted to watch something that's just a straight retelling of Super Sentai, I'll just watch Super Sentai. While I haven't necessarily been as big of a Power Rangers fan as I used to be as a kid, I do appreciate all of the liberties and changes that Power Rangers takes to make their own stories from what they can from Super Sentai footage.

If Power Rangers should just be like Sentai, then what's the point in Power Rangers existing in the first place?
I only found out about Sentai through Power Rangers. I'd it didn't exist, a lot of westerners would never have found Sentai. I loved seasons like Dino Thunder and Jungle Fury growing up and was happy to learn that those characters are originalq and aren't just copies of someone else's work |

I remember the first time I really became aware of Power Rangers beyond a general feeling of 'This is loud. Why is this so loud so early in the morning?' was when I first started seeing write-ups about Zyuranger in magazines. Because I was quite young, I immediately decided that this Power Rangers business was "the worst," and that the only true path for adaptation was to wholesale import the source material. I'm pleased (!?) to report that I am not young any more, and over time my feelings changed.
Putting aside the whole issue of localisation, the only Power Rangers stuff I had previously watched before people recommended I read the comics was Lost Galaxy and, please don't laugh, Wild Force. With both of these shows I immediately fell in love with the aspects of them that did not reflect the source material, even those that may seem a little goofy—there are horses on the moon, you guys!—and, whilst I may needlessly be echoing others here, I think it's wrong to write off Power Rangers for not telling the same story as sentai. As you say, I think you need to tell "the whole story," but it's good to appreciate the different kind of stories you can tell for different audiences. I know that no one here really needs me to wade in like this because of my poor pedigree, but I'd argue that any 1:1 adaptation in any medium is going to be a tough sell, and that maybe Power Rangers is at its best when it is free to tell a different kind of story. In fact, it's pretty wild, but remember the Dekaranger/Magiranger era when PR was actively influencing sentai? I attribute most of that to Sakamoto (begrudgingly), but how fun was that? How great was it to see these new ideas suddenly pop up in sentai? I'd like to see more of that; in fact, as someone who never watched the show Dino Fury is based on, I can't help but feel that there are certain things in this present iteration of PR that I would like to see influence sentai in future. This is getting overly long and others have said this better than me, so tl;dr different kind of stories can be fun! If something catches your eye, don't miss out! It's okay to take a break, but let's be excited for creativity! |

And i would argue that when PR does a 1:1 retelling of sentai like Samurai generally did, it results in a pretty shitty season. I personally rank Samurai below OPeration Overdrive. And sentai isnt innocent of plenty of their own filler

Time Force refutes this claim. In general, again, when compared with Time Force, the problem with the Samurai is precisely that the show did not accurately copy the Shinkengers. Also, that it was a very Japanese season that doesn't work in a western setting.

So this has actually turned into an interesting discussion - should PR adaptations be 1:1 or should they take liberties? That question can apply to other things as well, like film adaptations of comics, books, manga, etc.
I don't think the "if you want it to be a 1:1 adaptation, then just watch Sentai" argument is perfect, because people may just want the story presented in their native language - this is why dubbed anime exists. So a Power Rangers adaptation that follows the original Sentai story has a similar appeal as a dubbed anime. But as others have mentioned, it doesn't always translate perfectly, and sometimes we get something really unique and interesting as an end result, like RPM. Personally, I find it interesting when shows are re-adapted - it gives me a new way to watch something I enjoy, even if it's not as good. Macross and Robotech have different appeals, just like Power Rangers and Sentai. Plus, I like there to be a separation between the two. So that's my take.

It seems to me that there is no single correct way to adapt Super Sentai into Power Rangers. If the screenwriters have their own original idea, let them try to implement it; if not, let them better use the achievements of their Japanese colleagues than torture themselves and the audience. The main reason why most Rangers shows are worse than their Sentai counterparts is not that they are original or American (New Zealand, to be exact). It is that most (most, not all) Rangers are much lazier in all aspects of production. And frankly, I have no idea how to change that, because the ease and cheapness of these shows is the only reason why the Power Rangers continue to be made.

Just wanna say that while I prefer super sentai, ya gotta give credit where credit is due. In Space was Endgame before Endgame by wrapping up the Zordon era, RPM was Mighty Morphin Mad Max+Matrix Rangers and a good one at that, Beast Morphers was a fun take on Go-busters, OG MMPR was a great take on what if Saved by the Bell tapped into the superhero genre, Dino Thunder had a nice start taking notes from The Breakfast Club and having Tommy as the mentor, Zeo was a breath of fresh air by giving us new suits and footages, Dino Charge gave us an awesome cast, Ninja Steel gave us all the feels when Yoshi announced Peter as the next Blue Ranger at Power Morphicon, and Bulk and Skull still are the best comic relief ever. I could go on and on but I'm too lazy so I will conclude with TITANIUM RANGER EFF YEAH and Lightspeed Rescue was the closest we will get to a live action M.A.S.K. and G.I.Joe hybrid.
