Just saw the film for the first time. LOVED IT! It's got me so hyped for a sequel. I'm looking forward to the next godzilla as well.
Heres my little take on a sequel. It appears that they just leave kaiju to rot in the streets after battles. Some humans have begun harvesting the kaiju and selling them on the black market. Others have taken a liking to the kaijus destructive power.Humans have tried creating their own from the remnants of the originals as a means to obtain power. Human created kaiju are much more deadly than the originals seen years ago. However without sufficient control they are too dangerous to use as a weapon. By combining kaiju with jaeger technology people are finally able to tame the beast and use them as the weapons they intended. However, the humans dont have as much control as they think...

I know this thread is more for discussion of the film itself but NECA has been tweeting about Series 3 for the toyline They're currently in the planning stages but apparently sales are very strong for series 1, and it's looking like Cherno ALpha is coming in Series 3!

The thing I appreciated the most out of this film besides the outstanding visuals was the recognizable homages that were subtle but recognizable. Mako's meltdown was reminiscent of an Evangelion mental breakdown. Kaijus having 2 brains while being a reference to the obsolete Dinosaurs having multiple brains theory, probably would not have been in the movie had the Heisei Godzilla movies not done it first. Having multiple pilots reminded me of Sentai and Power Rangers. Falling from the space could be a reference to a lot of things really it's just something that works in the sci-fi genre but the 2 freshest examples I can think of are Halo Reach and Iron Man 1 or The Avengers. I felt respected as a fan of the genre. My only disappointments were the other Jaegers being trashed very quickly and the length of the fights were short, though I suppose it did leave me wanting more.

I mean Gipsy was great fun to watch, his action sequences were spectacular but I couldn't help but feel constantly disappointed that the two far more interesting mechs had only gotten one hit in each before being torn apart.

The others getting trashed really seems inconsequential to me. Considering there's a 5 year gap in the film we know they ran around and kicked ass in the background for a long time. This is the end of a war, and there are casualties. If the nobodies have to bite it then I'm cool. In the films history they had their fare shake but since they weren't the focal mechs or characters I wasn't really bothered to see them go.

Yeah but I don't care if it happened off screen, I paid to SEE the movie so don't establish characters only for everything important they do, to be done off screen.

Given the plot and the context of their existence and appearances in the film I guess I just don't understand why it's a big del. They were never gonna get the same kind of center stage treatment as Gypsy. I'm sure they did important things and of course they all looked really awesome but they weren't really the reason I was there. They weren't a deciding factor in the finale of the war either whereas Gypsy was. We know from that universe's history that Kaiju evolve over time. So Cherno and Crimson went out really easily because now they were outclassed by these latest Kaiju.

Okay, you saw the movie. It's not like you got cheated out of something that was promised. The focus was only ever meant to be on Gypsy and really I guess Stryker. All the trailers led up to the main plot focusing on Gypsy and Raleigh/Mako. We knew there'd be cameos by the others but no indication was ever given that they'd get tons of screen time.

But I still stand by the opinion that those two were a waste of both my time and the writers, designers and all the rest who put so much effort into things that were there for about a minute of screen time. It seems almost gratuitous to make the two most interesting mechs the ultimately most pointless.

I just saw it. I loved the way it looked visually. The acting was soso. Like i kind of wish they played more into when the brother was killed while they were still linked. I thought about that and if you were in someone elses mind when they died i think you would be alot more messed up.But the robots and monsters were great.
