has there ever been talks of the collateral damage caused by ranger fights?
I.E. damage monsters do before the rangers fight them or the giant monster/zord fights and the exploding monsters? Maybe even unnamed cilvilian live's lost. build damage? |

Not explicitly, but I do recall one or two episodes in season 1/2 of MMPR where the monster would be shown rampaging the city and someone would exclaim "Thank goodness the monster is only attacking the abandoned warehouse district!" or something like that.
No joke. They actually said 'abandoned warehouse district'. |

The collateral damage in Power Rangers and Super Sentai can reach ridiculous levels. It made me wonder a few times when monsters would shoot at Super Sentai mecha only for the mecha to dodge it, and hit the buildings behind! Would that really have been the right thing to do?
Power Rangers seems to usually try to pass off the buildings destroyed as empty buildings. Aside from the MMPR example already mentioned, there was that moment in SPD where a monster said something to the effect of "I love smashing empty buildings!" It can get quite ridiculous, but it's understandable to avoid addressing the horrors of massive collateral damage on a daily basis. Super Sentai, on the other hand, occasionally addresses the negative impact these monster attacks have on the population. I remember a poignant scene in Shinkenger where Shinken Red Takeru met a young boy who was sad. After cheering him up, his teacher explained that his father (I think) was recently killed in a monster attack, showing that civilians do suffer. I think the Japanese see monster attacks like natural disasters, unavoidable tragedies that they nevertheless stand up to with great resilience.

im sorry but the monsters as natural disasters idea just cracks me up. you'd think the military would be forced to make up a unit designed to deal/ assist the rangers

No one's ever really talked about it. But I imagine it would be both good and bad for the economy. Plenty of construction jobs with the Rangers/Sentai around, but people also lose their jobs when the building they work in is decimated by a giant Kaiju. As for KR: The damage tends to be less massive and more local. A store front here, a few windows there. Though in OOO I do remember a bunch of Yummy's, or where they Greeed's? Babies bursting through the windows of a high-rise. And that giant insect one. But for the most part KR damage tends to be more small scale.
But aside from what Con said there doesn't tend to be alot of talk about it. I consider it like damage done in a Superman throw-down. People know it's there, but no one really complains. They just go about their day, fix the damage, and wait for the next round. |
