Mostly because I find post-Timeranger Sentai to be insufferably ugly and gaudy with the cg abuse.
Any recommendations? These are the ones I was interested in Dynaman- Mostly because I love how obviously baseball themed the costumes are but apparently it has jack all to do with baseball I guess? Bioman- Since this was the first almost Power Rangers series Liveman- I heard it was really dark. Any other 80s Sentai I should check out? |

Bioman and Liveman are good choices. Bioman is the show that made Super Sentai more modern. Liveman had interesting villains.
I would also suggest: Flashman if you like a cool and unique story with the futuristic aesthetic. This is my favorite 80s Sentai. Denjiman and Sun Vulcan if you like talking dogs. Goggle V if you want to see what Kiramager would look like as a Showa season.

Flashman kinda is like Zyuranger, Gingaman, Goseiger, and Ryusoulger in a sense that because the rangers are Earthlings who were abducted by aliens as enfants, they are not familiar with Earth having lived most of their lives in outer space. The subplot other than save the Earth is that they also try to look for their biological parents and family who they were separated from.
As for Liveman: Quote:
Seriously Liveman is a must watch. Last Showa sentai team with a lot of familiar faces, great story and villains, great show overall about friendship, greed, redemption, many first attempts too. Gave us our first female blue ranger, Takeru's dad from Ghost was the yellow ranger, first time both green and black rangers were available, and first time two robots combined into a bigger super robot. Heck Hurricanger's premise and setup borrowed heavily from the show.

Changeman is a series I endorse. DragonRanger Burai from Zyuranger is the blue in this one. It leans pretty heavily into "Earth Defense" militarism in a manner similar to Ohranger. For a long while, Changeman felt like a "blip on a screen" Sentai, but it actually has a more to like than you might think. The first few episodes seem like they want to echo the gore and horror effects of the '80s before the rest of the series tones it down. There are definitely some dated aspects and things I can't explain, like the idea of having a villainess have a voice like a male until the series reaches its endgame. I still think that the finale is a small triumph for older Sentai. Give a chance if you're feeling it. |
