Before we can continue discuss about the issues here, let me give you the special announcement: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Japanese Government or Diet (Parliament) has revised the amendments of the Japanese Copyright Law Act. With Millions and Billions of Yen lost not only to COVID-19, but also from those pirated websites with illegal downloads of the Japanese television programs and movies online, the Japanese Government/Diet has ordered the permanent termination of such websites (both Japanese and Abroad) and their owners to be jailed. The said amendments also said that these programs, movies and online streamings can be seen exclusively to Japanese viewers and moviegoers only and not to foreign individuals. However, if any of the websites (such as this one) wants to publish articles such as photographs and videos (Japanese and Foreign), they must gain permission from the Japanese Government/Diet, the Japanese television networks, the Japanese movie companies and the Japanese websites to avoid the third party involvement. Lastly, the official releases of the shows and movies must be supported and not duplicated. Even Youtube, Facebook, Dailymotion, Niconico and other video websites are no safe havens for these illegal downloads of the programs and movies thereof. Any comments on this particular issue are welcome.

I, uh, link?
Frankly how would they even be able to enforce this law on foreign websites and persons outside their jurisdiction?

... are you talking about this?
https://www.epicdope.com/whats-all-t...me-shuts-down/ Because, yeah, technically they could go after illegal Toku streaming services if they wanted to. But Tokunation needing to ask the Japanese Government to use pictures and officially uploaded trailers? Yeah, that’s a bit… unrealistic. |

They're going after anime and manga stuff hard because yeah, that's huge in the west. But… Toku? It’s not even worth for Toei to release most stuff officially here, so it’s not like they’re losing money. Ultraman is safe since they release officially. What I could see happening is certain sites like Kissasian and torrent sharing portals disappearing, although they will be back within days anyways. Subbing groups are mostly just blogs with links to said torrent portals so... safe? It could go either way, personally I feel like we will feel no impact unless you’re someone who exclusively streams subbed content on Kissasian or something. But hey, positive outlook – maybe Toei finally puts up Kamen Rider subbed on YouTube or something. |

Everybody should embrace the true pirate way and use torrents. Arrrr. Those streaming sites have always sucked for a variety of reasons anyway!

I know this sounds stupid, But what if I was in the middle of using a torrent then all of sudden, get slapped with a fine or would I be safe.

I'll take Germany as an example since that's the only country I'm familiar with when it comes to this: Torrenting is illegal as you share the copyrighted content with others while you download it. There exist specialized lawyers who work with internet providers to get data on who used the torrent. Then they threaten to sue you if you don't pay a fee. What you then do is take a lawyer of your own who disputes this, a lower fee is settled upon and that’s it. Thing is - the one licensing the content needs to authorize the law firms. So to make the most profit and to catch as many people as possible, law firms work with the big movie producers when huge Hollywood productions come out or something. Marvel movies and the such. Or big local productions the lawyers can easily get in contact with. So for someone in Germany to get fined for torrenting Kamen Rider for example, you would first need lawyers who know Kamen Rider exists (insert Kamen Rider Zolda joke here), they would then need to negotiate with Toei and Toei would need to allow them to take legal action in their name. And then they would actually need to find the two-dozen people in Germany who actually torrent it. And on top of that - there would need to be someone in Germany who actually has a license for Kamen Rider someone living in Germany could infringe upon. That's a lot of hoops to jump through; it's easier to target big productions everyone knows. The lawyers know what to target and they know there will be lots of people torrenting it. Now, taking the context of the new Japanese laws into account - they're looking to take big streaming / torrent sites down. I highly doubt they would go after individuals using these services here. |

Depending on where you live that can already happen.

I know the law would apply to it regardless, but I feel like there would need to be a serious intent behind hunting down websites that spread toku as opposed to anime and I don’t see that happening. The Japanese industry isn’t really loosing much money, if not none, from the few percent of people around the globe watching Kamen Rider or Super Sentai. Anime and manga is a whole different dimension, money-wise. |
