I've gotten up to episode 8 of Go-Busters.
So, full disclosure: it's pretty great. I didn't have much to say about the first couple of episodes, but as things quickly settled down and the team started building rapport and all that, things quickly became exponentially more entertaining. Go-Busters is only the third Sentai I've started, but it's still pretty remarkable how much of a difference a smaller cast can make. None of the other series (well, the one other series, Kyuranger really hasn't gotten far enough yet...though one can predict how that'll go already) really had enough room to focus on and build up each character and their relationships to each of the other as much as Go-Busters is already doing in just the small number of episodes I've seen. It's great. Ryuuji is probably my favorite of the three Go-Busters at the moment. (Such a shame he turns into a man eating dragonfly in about four years' time.) Also despite my general inexperience with Sentai, how nonstandard the show is shows through quite easily. It's still definitely Sentai as I have come to envision it, but it definitely takes an unique approach. To the organization, the gear, the mecha. It's pretty fun. Certain elements of the show also remind me of RPM, which is pretty much literally the best thing a Sentai could remind me of, so that's good. Go-Busters: pretty good so far. But isn't that, like, nearly every sixth hero in their first few episodes? Or is MegaSilver's special power that he doesn't lose his debut power level the way they normally do? (Actually, I should really get around to Megaranger at some point. I'm still chewing on Boukenger.)

Go-Busters 9
Did they just spring a new ending theme on me? During a Taisen promotion ed? But why, Go-Busters? Also kinda interesting seeing Enter exhibit an emotion that isn't "smugly French" for the first time... |

I've been slowly making my way through GoGo-V and I'm on episode 31, its a pretty bipolar show with some very incredibly high highs and ridiculously dumb lows. There is an arc that spans 3 episodes, (i think 19-20-21) which was absolutely fantastic. It was borderline tough to watch because of how almost depressing and brutal they were. It was something I never expected from this and gave me super tonal whiplash. I really like GoGoRed, he is a good Red ranger; he is a bit of a dickhead which I can always get behind. Yellow Ranger is also a good character IMO, he has a clear inferiority complex to the others and his character is generally handled with more nuance than the others. Pink, Green and Blue are pretty generic with no real interesting character development as of yet outside of some individual episodes which doesnt really flesh out that much. Green has more than the other two though.
The monster / robot designs are pretty cool and unique, i especially love Salamandes. |

Up to episode 32 of Megaranger. Still pretty much head over heels for it.
The whole debut of Mega Voyager was amazing. I love the way this show treats its mecha with some real weight. It's the debut of the fancy new robot for the back half of the show but a ton of time is devoted to making sure you don't forget that Galaxy Mega is still the s***, even when it's losing. Lesser shows would just kind of forget the original guy exists as soon as the Q3 toy catalogs came out, but Megaranger is too cool for that. Also the mecha action itself is a cut above the usual stuff. That scene of Super Galaxy Mega getting knocked onto the ground had some really visually interesting shots that you don't normally see. And I'm still not sure what you're talking about with Mega Silver, Matrixbeast. He's been positively out of the way so far. Oh hush you! I'm still grumpy enough about you smack-talking the Magirangers. I don't need this too.

Mega Voyager's debut is positively amazing. Helps that Galaxy Mega is fully staffed, so when that robot's in peril, it's downright terrifying. Especially when Kubota's also on the line.
I guess I just didn't attach to Mega Silver, then. And yeah, I know about the deluge of episodes where he was absent (Or didn't morph)

Since I needed a mental break from watching things to review, I watched the first 10 episodes of Dairanger today, as I haven't seen it since Shout!'s DVD first came out. It was nice to just sit back and enjoy a Sentai show again just for the sake of enjoying it.

Watched through episode 37 of Megaranger. I still think it's amazing. Go figure.
So first off, the Nezirezia's previously unbroken streak of pure terror finally had one stinker of a plan, but it's only because the goofy mascot monster went and made his own MotW without asking, so I'm not going to hold it against them. Like, one notable miss can't undo the fact that a couple episodes ago, they were brainwashing children into committing bombings. And despite being a pathetic freak of nature, the Canary Nezira still manages to give the Megarangers some trouble. Second, Yuusaku really is just a delight, huh? I absolutely adored episode 36's whole plot. It probably helps that it was written by Kobayashi just like a lot of the Mega Silver-centric episodes. Although Kubota was the real MVP in it. Dude not only sticks up for Mega Silver's presence when the suits try and shut him down, he later fearlessly rolls into action with the Digitank during the climax and totally saves the day. He's just some random old guy and yet is like the coolest mentor character ever, it's awesome.

I finished GoGo-V today, and I really enjoyed it! I wrote an article summing up my thoughts on it here https://modamoda.moda/2017/03/20/kyu...gofive-review/ but overall I think it was a really really fun ride overall.
I started Kyoryuger today on a whim, and I am already missing the family dynamic of the Tatsumis. Also the effects seem a lot more hokey with the added CGI. Still enjoying it a lot though, KyoryuBlue is a really cool character and not the type I would expect to see in a sentai. Mech is bad though. Sad! |
