REST IN PEACE: SUSUMU YOSHIKAWA (October 13, 1935-July 10, 2020): Born in Tokyo, the Super Sentai producer joined Toei Studios at the age of 22. He was assigned to the newly established Television Division in 1964, and produced his first series, "Biographies of Japanese Swordsmen," in 1968. His first tokusatsu series was supporting Producer Tohru Hirayama on "Kikaider" in 1972 - tokusatsu became his focus from then on.
Yoshikawa contributed to the launch of the long-running Super Sentai series in 1979, and their sale to Saban in the early 1990s. He produced "Kamen Rider Black" and "Black-RX," and was also the creator of the Metal Hero series. He later became the head of the company's home video division, Toei Video. His last tokusatsu series was "Changerion" in 1996. From 1978 through the early 1990s, he was the Second General Manager of the Planning and Sales Department of the TV Division. This put him in the position of overall control of not only Toei's tokusatsu, but also its anime produced at Toei Head Office. He was 84 years old. |
