That ending makes me curious to see if Zenkai Red will get to come back in any meaningful fashion (As in, not just showing up in a movie to shoot a mook then disappearing forever). It was a fun special, and I dug the direction it went. The human Zenkaiger plot point was nice, but I'm glad it wasn't something too convoluted.

Well this was pretty brilliant, huh? I think the only thing I even need to say is that the credited writer for this thing is Saburou Hatte. That pretty much tells you everything you need to know. But then, while I'm here anyway... I enjoyed this a lot, and that means a fair bit considering where my expectations were at. I both thought this idea sounded amazing from the second I first heard about it, meaning it had hype to live up to; yet it's also part of Toei's continued efforts to help push TELASA, which I'm a bit apprehensive about. So for two completely different reasons, I was ~kinda~ inclined to be mean to this mini-series if it was anything less than great, and thus it's rather fortunate it was so good. Starting with that second point first, because I learned from Zenkaiger that logic is for chumps, I think this plot was the perfect fit not only for one of these spin-offs, but for a spin-off released in the show's early days. This is a premise that's so deeply rooted in meta writing about fan expectations and franchise traditions that it really has no business gumming up the works of the TV series, which needs to be for the kids watching Zenkaiger before it's anything else. It's the exact opposite of something I want to see in the show, and yet, allowed to flourish on its own here, it's an exciting and clever premise. Plus, because it's focused on asking the most obvious possible questions about the Zenkaigers' strange existence, it makes sense coming now, rather than like 40 episodes deep when none of this is shocking anymore. The execution of that great premise does it justice, too, which is where things really start going right. The effort put into making Zenkai Red seem like the coolest dude ever, to the point his gun is a lightsaber, is delightful. From the angles he's filmed at, to the poses he makes, he's the splitting image of a classic hero. The way all that effort then completely clashes with Zenkaiger's style, to the point he comes off like he's trying WAY too hard (his gun is a lightsaber) is simply a beautiful contrast. This extends to his personality out of suit, as well, which would fit way better in a Sun Vulcan than a Carranger, to put in appropriately referential terms. It's a fairly simple matter of having the team react to that big presence and ultimately reaffirming their validity as a Sentai team from there – exactly what you'd expect, but also what you're probably hoping for with a story like this, so that's hardly an issue. Kaito gives me some major Sougo from Kamen Rider Zi-O vibes here in a way I really loved, with the specific way he tries to work out in his head if he should be angry at Zenkai Red or not in the first part, and especially at the end, where his reaction to having the (lack of) logic behind Zenkai Red still having his Gear pointed out is basically to shrug and say it's more fun this way, which I'm pretty sure is an exact recreation of how Shinichirou Shirakura makes every decision he does with both Zi-O and Zenkaiger. Overall, it's so much fun that the worst part is honestly the implication the events of it were just a dream. Sure, it makes for a nice bookend, but I'd be genuinely happy to see another spin-off following up on this plot. Maybe Zenkai Red could even make good on his boasts and show up with a whole team of single-color Zenkaiser repaints in tow next time? I don't know. Pushing this gag too far could be a mistake, but after this, I'm also confident Zenkaiger could pull it off in a way that wouldn't leave people asking why the "normal" ones aren't the protagonists of the actual show.

While I felt the ending implication that it was a dream was pretty disappointing, I still do hold out some hope. Super Sentai has always had an implication of creating miracles, so who knows, maybe Zenkai Red can become a real boy.

I really like the fact that this was as a thing and that it both felt more polished than the DCD/Zi-o specials, and also felt like it was its own thing, and not just footage they cut out to accommodate the fights as with the feel of the Saber specials—having said that, it wasn't my cup of tea, and I thought the gathered "white" Rangers was a heck of a stretch, but I really did like the message of it.
I guess I'm at the point where I'm happy this show exists for the people who like it, but I'm also content enough to put it aside until such time as it appeals more to me. I still love the tank guy though. He's great. |

I really enjoyed Tsuruhime making a return appearance. Otherwise, the end message would have fallen flat.
That and I just really love Tsuruhime and Kakuranger as a whole

Agreed for sure—and there's definitely a lot of good reasons to love both Tsuruhime and Kakuranger.

So, I watched the first ep from TV Nihon, and it was charming!
However... I do have one question... are TVN's encodes always this terrible??? I watched the raw on NYAA for comparison's sake, and all I've gotta say is... yikes, TVN. Yikes. |

Yeah like Jiraiya and his John Wayne cosplay from his debut episode.
