There really isn't a cockpit gimmick. You just need to stick your finger nail in there and open them up. Hell, just pushing the edge of your finger works to because it is just a little tab that keeps the body close together.
I have a feeling these were meant to be retail figures initially, but no one wanted them so they decided to make them a "Collector's" figure. |

Thanks for posting the review man. DAMN that thing is HUGE! Holy crap, I knew it was big, but seeing it compared to the smaller lion puts things in perspective.
Wish it was I guess, more anime accurate, like less chunky, more streamlined/curved and had silver(aware that the limbs were white in the cartoon but it looks plain on the toy).

the size really makes me want this, but the spring loaded gimicks ruining the leg articulation and the lack of a bicep swivel in arm mode really hurts the figure imo. I really like the cockpit idea, but the stickers rather than sculpted detail is a major dissapointment.
Lance is pretty awful imo, the sculpt is good, but the articulation and accessory count is a real shame, he really should have had a gun he could hold considering they sculpted one on his waist. Considering his msrp was originally around 15 bucks, I'd rather just go buy a Kiwami Tamashii which are cheaper and have much better articulation, high accessory counts and an insane amount of sculpted detail. For the price these things are just doing too many things wrong. |

I had wanted a perfect version of Voltron for a long time, and for the longest, Toynami's version has filled that role quite nicely, even though it didn't come with all the individual weapons for each lion, I thought that the proportions and general aesthetics was pretty dead on.
Then comes along the announcement for the new Voltron by Mattel, I was very excited like most other people, till I saw it in person at NY Comic Con, I couldn't have been more disappointed. Bigger is better right? not always, it's almost comical how large these lions are, and that would have been awesome had it been loaded up with details, but, it has too many clean surfaces, and really look like a children's toy. Now thanks to your review, I find out the lack of bicep swivel, which is a such obvious necessity, is left out. Lack of articulation in the legs due to gimmick, less than stellar pilot figure, I mean, I think the little Human Alliance figures from TFs has more articulation in its limbs. I can go on... It is just way too many reasons to justify the purchase. I will continue to hold out hope for a Bandai Soul of Chogokin version.

Yeah, the lack of a bicep swivel was a huge negative for me. To be honest, the main reason I got a subscription for these was for the pilots. I could do without the lions, as you said, the Toynami one is great. Plus, I have for me what is the ultimate version of Golion/Voltron, the Blazing Sword version that is a single piece with multiple points of articulation. I have wanted Revoltech to do one for years (and one for Dairugger), so I was overjoyed when Mattel decided to do one. It is incredible as I can pose him in any shape or form I see fit, and he is anime accurate. I love the lions of the Toynami version because they look like lions. The problem was, my Masterpiece Voltron had a broken black lion head, so after getting it replaced, I never opened it. That is why I have the plastic one opened, and I feel it is far better quality than the vac metal one, but it still feels like something is going to break just by looking at it wrong. Hence why I am mostly pleased with Mattel's verson, as I do not feel like the legs are going to break. However, if I could, I would have just gone with the pilots and that is it.

I think that's why Mattel decided to bundle the pilots after all, knowing full well that they are a bigger draw than the Lion itself.
