Daizyujin
Daizyujin or the original Megazord. Probably the first thing that comes to mind when people think about Sentai Mechas especially to those who were introduced to it via Power Rangers. While Mighty Morphin wasn't my introduction into Sentai, it's still hard to put into perspective what exactly makes this design so good compared to other Sentai Mechas since its been so ingrained into our brains as the first. Daizyujin design just overall feels more solidly put together than most of the mechas that came before. There's so many striking elements like the Sabertooth Tiger and Triceratops heads as feet, the teeth like design for the chest, and the horned head; All these elements gives Daizyujin a sort of prehistoric feel to him which fits with Zyurangers theme. Great colours too. Red is definitely the main center colour and I like that the limbs have small bits of red in them. Helps connect the whole colour scheme together. He's just a very good looking mecha all around. Dino Tanker Dino Tanker is kind of a silly mode but there's sort of a charm to it. I do find it interesting that unlike other alternate modes like Five Trailer and Icarus Haken, Dino Tanker is more of an in-between mode of Daizyujin and the 5 individual animals. Gouryujin I quite like Gouryujin, though he is definitely abit of an oddity compared to the secondary mechas that came before him. Gouryujin is for all intents and purposes Dragon Caesar's mecha form but it's one that he is unable to form by himself. He needs some of the pieces of Daizyujin to do it. Despite the fact that his limbs are basically the same, Dragon Caesar forms a much larger torso which gives him a different feel. From that box like head, the gold chest emblem, to the giant knee pads, it creates the impression that Gouryujin is more of a powerhouse than Daizyujin. The drill lance also adds to that. Zyutei Daizyujin After coming off some of the other combination mechas we had in the past, Zyutei Daizyujin does seem a little weak in comparison. It just sort of looks like Daizyujin wearing Dragon Caesar's carcass which I guess sort of fits Zyuranger prehistoric aesthetic. I do appreciate that Dragon Caesar's head fin is extended in this form which makes it a little more unique but otherwise I don't think it's that great looking. Ultimate Daizyujin Ultimate Daizyujin is pretty much the Turbo Builder/Max Magma of Zyuranger i.e it's big, looks cool, and fires a ton weapons at enemies. The sort of chariot like design with Zyutei Daizyujin riding on Brachion back aesthetically fits in with Zyurangers prehistoric theme. I also like that both Zyutei Daizyujin and Brachion change a little bit in this form, especially in the case of Zyutei Daizyujin with the new chest piece and claws arms. I'm wondering if that form ever got used on its own in the show. Next week, Dairanger. Last edited by Byg42; 06-15-2017 at 09:06 AM.. |

Dragon Caesar... The Mechagodzilla of Super Sentai.
Cannot complain with these designs. The teeth pattern on Daizyujin's chest is just simple yet clever. Gouryujin feels very streamlined and the blue and yellow legs are contrasting but do not feel awkward.

Ultimate Daizyujin is my favorite combination in Zyuranger.
Hmm...in Legacy version, both Dragon Caesar (Dragonzord) and Mythical Chi Beast Won Tiger (White Tigerzord) can combined too. Hmm...I am find this video: I think this combination is really cool too. |

As somebody who has absolutely no nostalgia for MMPR or Zyuranger, Its not hard to see why Daizyujin, or its MMPR equivalent, is so popular besides simply being the first Mecha/Megazord for many people. I think the biggest strength of Zyuranger's mecha is how cohesive they are compared to many of the mecha that came before it. Save for the two different colored legs, nothing about Daizyujin or Gouryujin says that its 5 or 6 different robots stuck together. Something I also noticed about Daizyujin is that, like many mecha before it, its kind of boxy. Unlike those though, where this boxyness was silly at best or ugly and dated at worst, the boxyness here is extremely natural and goes really well with the overall design of the robot.

Finally some mecha I know something about. My favorite though is the combination where Ceasar rides on DaiZyuJin's shoulders. It was my favorite in MMPR too, and I always wished they used it more in both cases.

Probably one of the most revolutionary years for mech designs in Sentai history. This is the first set of mechs that got away from looking like a bunch of boxes with flat detail and actually had a lot three-dimensional detailing instead. It's really amazing to compare these to the mechs from Jetman and see just how much more evolved these designs are.

This is where the mecha actually started to matter. Mech battles were no longer just glorified finishing moves because the mecha actually did stuff. Not to mention they built up the mecha and developed the concept before they threw the whole thing in there. All of the shows from the 80s had the mecha right from the get go without any effort and every episode feature a mech battle whether it needed one or not.
Another thing about Zyuranger is that it was the start of being done with the boxy one dimensional looking mecha. Like there is barely any difference between Dynarobo and Changerobo. No one has ever looked like Daizyujin, Dragon Ceasar, or King Brachion though. |

No longer as boxy, dropped the jet and car motifs that was getting really dull really quickly, and very stylish.
Daizyujin and the bunch is pretty sweet~

Also, I still remember the art book scans of what could of become zyu3 footage if Saban didn't went the cheap route and use Dairanger footage after exhausting zyu2 footages. The scans detail upgraded version of Daizyujin along with a compatible version of the new Tigerzord. I assume the scriptwriters are about to get rid of Tommy and replace him with the new white ranger and his zord after the zyu2 footages around that time. |
