Okay, so we can all pretty much agree that Kamen Rider doesn't handle the whole boy/girl romance thing all that well. Nozama and Ryusei have kind of a weird thing semi-going on, Akiko and Terui got married mostly out of nowhere, Shinji had a thing going for a chick who only existed in a movie and then died, Yuto and Airi... man, I don't even know what's going on there anymore. So no, romances don't get a lot of development or screentime (or logic, in many cases). But you know what does? Bromances.
Almost since the show began, and definitely in the Heisei era, Kamen Rider has had a great tradition of dudes forming close knit kinships with each other. So I thought I'd see which ones you found the most compelling. The nominees are: Hayato and Taki from the original Kamen Rider: Kind of a weird relationship as Taki was there mostly to be a face actor since Sasaki was basically a part-time actor until Fujioka's inevitable return. Still, the two really shared a close bond in their mutual love of both justice and belittling female supporting characters. Yusuke and Ichijo from Kuuga: The carefree adventurer turned superhero and his detective BFF. The two were so tight that Yusuke took Ichijo along for his final fight, trusting the cop to put him down if Ultimate form grew out of control. Ren and Shinji from Ryuki: Similar sounding name to a classic Nicktoon notwithstanding, these two guys started off the show as not especially friendly rivals, but over the course of the show they grow into best friends. I defy anyone not to be moved by what happens to these two at the end of the Rider War. Goro and Kitaoka from Ryuki: Technically more of a master/servant relationship, but you can tell how much these two really depend on each other and how they try to keep each other's spirits up about all the crap that's going down. Kenzaki and Hajime from Blade: Another relationship that starts off with them as adversaries, but by the end of the show Hajime's life is so important to Kenzaki that he's willing to give up his own humanity to save his friend. Tendou and Kagami from Kabuto: Tendou may take an almost perverse delight in trolling Kagami, but when things gets tough he will always be right there at Kagami's side, ready to face it together. Yuto and Deneb from Den-O: Another master/servant relationship, these two are defined by Deneb's smothering and Yuto's teasing, but again, they legitimately care for each other and Deneb will go to great lengths to make sure nothing bad happens to Yuto. Shotaro and Philip from W: These two partners are very different people, but their bond as W has forced them to be incredibly close. Shotaro often takes on more of a "big brother" role, but it's often Philip who has to step in and bring some maturity to their situations. Their last transformation in the penultimate episode of W left most of us in tears. Eiji and Ankh from OOO: These two spent as much time fighting as they did working together, and even when they were on the same side they were often arguing about everything. By the end of the series, though, they'd formed a real connection to each other, even if Ankh would never admit it. Date and Gotou from OOO: These two form a great team that somehow manages to perfectly straddle the line between "big brother/little brother" and "comedian/straight man" with the collected Gotou learning how to be a better man from the carefree Date. Personally, this is a hard one for me to make a call on as so many of these relationships worked really well. I'm not even going to vote until I sit and think about it some more. But enough about me, what's your pick? Is there anyone I left off this list but should have included? If so, please tell me. |

I don't know if compelling is the right word. But i got attached to Yuuto and Deneb. It reminded me a lot like me and my best friend in high school. We cared about each other and watched each others back , but we would not hesitate to put each other in a wrestling move when we were pissed off at each other. For those reasons i became attached to those two.
And yeah... Toku doesn't seem to care about relationships. I watched OOO's expecting Eiji to get with Hina. I watched Den-O expecting Ryutaro to get with Hana. ( that stopped when she became a kid and wound up his niece ) Maybe i am just accustomed to superheroes having a girlfriend they have to save all the time. |

I think I ultimately have to go with Kenzaki and Hajime. Their relationship was pretty much the crux of Blade's entire plot and it led to what I still think is the most powerful finale in Rider history.

Tendou and KaGAAAmi < Yaguruma and Kageyama (Alternately, Kageyama and TheBee Zecter)
That said, Shotaro and Phillip have to be my favorite. It's kinda the entire point of W, so it obviously got the most attention and development out of all of these. Then there was the ending of the show. EDIT: Then of course, you have to bring up Blade, which I haven't gotten around to yet. I suppose I'll have to do that now, to see if my opinion is at all changed. Last edited by Brainchild; 08-05-2012 at 02:27 PM.. |

Eiji and Ankh.
All those other bromances are great and the character interactions are amazing, touching at times, but only though an idiot like Eiji could make a pile of medals truly live.

Kitaoka and Goro is my pick. I loved their little dynamic in Ryuki, and they made a good combo.

Romance isn't Toku's strong point but bromance is something that is fleshed out a good deal in these series. I doubt we'll get strong romance arc until we get writers who can do so. My vote goes to Shotaro and Philip as they had the most defined parthership out of all the choices that I've seen.
@Kamen Rider Meteor: Who'd a thunk it that Hina would turn off to be his niece in the end? That must have been awkward is he had a crush on her before hand. @Matrixbeast: Eiji and Ankh have the second best relationship out of the choices I've seen, which isn't a lot sadly. Eiji isn't the smartest person on the block but you can't deny that he is generous to a fault which helped to bring Ankh out of his shell a little bit. |
