The Video Game which sparked Controversy, video game Revolution, and Arcade Domination. The Video Game which brought us the best Fighting Genre Video Game Adaptation to date (Because it wasn't directed by Satan.. I mean Uwe Boll). The Video Game which brought us Flawless Victory and Finish Him. And the Video Game which brought destroyed proper spelling for a generation of young gamers. Mortal Kombat.
My first experience was when I was young and walking through a JC Penny. They had a brand new SEGA Genesis console hooked up for Demos and (In something that would never happen today with all the PCness) they hooked in Mortal Kombat. Raiden was the character I chose. And I fell in love with an entire series. Mortal Kombat Two though introduced what would become my Favorite Characters. Kitana, the Iron Fan Princess. And Baraka. The Spike Weilding Outlander. I adored them both. Kitana was quick and agile. Easy to dodge and then retalliate. And Baraka was good for a frontal assault on someone's defenses. And then we come to the Movie. Which is still one of my absolute favorite Video Game Adaptations set to film. Ever. They captured every character beautifully, and it had one of my favorite actors as Raiden. Christopher Lambert. And one of my favorite scenes. Where Lu and Johnny are entering Outland to save Sonya from Shang, and they run into Reptile. He gets kicked into a mystical statue and begins to morph.. and you hear "Reptile!" from the game voice. And it's all Hell Yes from there. Sequel? There was no sequel. I have no idea what you're talking about... Mortal Kombat will always remain one of the best. |

Mortal Kombat was a fun fighter, while it wasn't my personal fighter of choice (I was a Street Fighter player), I can see the influence (Seeing as how there were an overabundance of MK ripoffs using digitized graphics, including a crappy American SF that ripped off MK. Talk about crazy )
But it was also a series muddied by attempts at innovation. It never could get the 3D systems down, so from 4, to Deadly Alliance, to Deception, to Armageddon, it just disappointed more and more, and my interest waned, only briefly reinvigorated by Shaolin Monks (And action/adventure beat-em up, not a fighter) before dropping again. The flare of Fatalities were nice, but come MK 3, it reeked far too much of "Trying too hard," most especially to recapture the same shock value of the first MK. The movie was great, and it's nice to see a Video game movie that isn't sheer crap. But it would leave a bad taste in my mouth to call MK "One of the best" in terms of games, after staling gameplay come MK3 and poor mechanics in all their 3D games. While MK9 breathed a breath of fresh air into the franchise, time will tell if they can keep the train rolling or if they'll derail once more.

The web series was great! I can't wait to see the second season. And the movie.
I played MKII when I was four. Lol, I turned out fine, so I don't understand the whole "video game violence" crap all the time. Bunch of BS. Also, there's a lot of fun trivia in these videos.

The Original will remain in the Pantheon of Great Games, for certain. Have you played the latest installment or DC vs MK, Matrix?
The Video Game Violence causes Real Violence debate will lead us into areas not allowed to be discussed here. But I will say: It has nothing to do with reality or facts. |

DC Vs MK is not, on the other hand (Though Injustice is cool). I have no intention of bringing up those topics, since it's not in my interest to do so.

If anyone hasn't seen Legacy, go do that. They seem to be taking their time in posting the Season 2 episodes, so there's plenty of time to watch it all. The whole first season is just about the length of a movie.

My love for violence in my media stems back to Mortal Kombat, my first ever game as a kid on the Megadrive. As I grew older I cared less and less about the franchise, as I cared less and less about fighters and eventually gaming in general but I followed it on and off all the way to the 360 and I'm very grateful at how much entertainment it provided me, my friends and how much it shaped me and my interests as a person.

Legacy is awesome. Mortal Kombat has one of the best storylines and character development of any fighting game. The way the characters grew over time was awesome. I especially liked how Bi Han(Sub Zero 1) wasn't exactly good nor bad. He had a chance at redemption but was robbed of the chance and returned as Noob Saibot. He actually didn't kill Scorpion's family but was framed for it and IIRC was in turn, killed by Scorpion.
The guy directing Legacy is also going to direct the next Mortal Kombat movie which I believe is a reboot and ties into the Legacy series. Legacy was well done. It's a shame that Jazwares's MK9 figures weren't that good. My gut feeling is that Joe Amaro's plans for it weren't fully realized as he was very excited for the line. I hope NECA one day makes Mortal Kombat figures.

It's suck was so great it brought down the first movie with it. |
