Partly because I'm trying to think up final forms for some of my own fanmade Kamen Riders, but also just because I'm curious: What do all of you like in Kamen Rider final forms? I'm asking about visual design, abilities, the story around them, all of it. I have a bunch of questions to get the ball rolling, but don't feel like you have to answer all of them.
Do you like when they're visually flashy and decorated, or when they keep it simple and understated? Do you like final forms that look bulky and heavily armored, or ones with more sleekness and grace? How do you feel about capes, coattails and other long flowy bits? Do you like the gold, silver and white that seem to be all the rage lately, or wish Toei would use some other colors? Do you prefer a powered-up version of the Rider's base form, a culmination of all the other forms they've gathered, or a new powerset unique to the final form? Do you like final forms that have a wide variety of versatile abilities, ones with only one ability that's still strong enough to be final-form-worthy, or ones that avoid fancy tricks and just use raw strength, speed and toughness to win? Do you like when a final form has drawbacks that prevent the Rider from using it too freely? And if so, do you prefer those drawbacks to be solvable problems that the Rider eventually overcomes, or permanent issues that they have to deal with whenever they use the final form? Do you like when achieving the final form is a victory, something the heroes have been working towards? Or when it's a sacrifice, great power but at a terrible cost or risk? Do you like the final form to be part of the villain's plan that gets turned against them, or something unexpected that catches them off guard? What's your favorite form, and why do you like it so much? What's your least favorite form, and what's one thing you like about it, or how would you make it better? |

I would like a final form to give more power, even enduring a side effect that would give me heart attacks.
Like I’m awaiting for my death and want my dreams and goals fulfilled before I pass on. Sometimes cause my mind to go animalistic and berserk and bloodlust. |

A good final form should come with some form of drawback that makes its use dangerous. Ultimate Kuuga and PuToTyra going berserk or King Form Blade threatening to take away Kenzaki's humanity are great examples of that.

A special weapon to make it stand out.
I don't mind a hero using a previous form's weapon (Full Bottle Buster, Gashacon Keyslasher, Saikyo Girade). But I feel like a form that's the strongest in the show should get some special weapon that helps it become even stronger; even if it's used mainly for the finisher (i.e. Cosmic States' rocket sword). I really miss final form weapons. Cool design. I'm easy to appease in this case. EDIT: To clarify, I don't care if they're sleek or bulky, flashy or subtle. It really depends on the show's aesthetic and the form(s) that came before it. For example, Maximum Mighty X is bulky, whereas Muteki is sleek; Double Xtreme and Drive Type Tridoron play on their main themes (what if Double became triple; Drive's used a bunch of cars, but not Tridoron). For Zero-One himself, I'm expecting something gold. Hoping for a special weapon, but if he uses MCH's combined blade, that's fine too. Cool powers that it uses often-ish. Wish Fourze Cosmic States used its switch-mixing gimmick more, but at least it did it more than Build Genius. Mugen has, like, seven finishers, which is super-cool. Muteki cannot detransform unwillingly (i.e. rider gets punched hard and the suit disappears; not the case with Muteki). Genius can use/combine bottle abilities, though it ditches that (only using Diamond twice) for abusing the heck out of its flash-stepping power. A cool henshin gimmick. Putting a device in and everything is cool, but I like things like Hyper Muteki or Meteor Storm because of their extras (docking to cover center screen, and BEYBLADE BEYBLADE LET IT RIP, respectively). EDIT: To include one of my own ideas, this is the final form for an OC of mine. The suit itself is a lot more elaborate than his previous forms, including tons of speakers and wavy tech lines. And the helmet looks like that sound wave representation (bouncing, synchronized, colored bars) I find associated with music. The henshin device is a giant egg that slots another egg inside; seeing as how his gimmick is egg timers (long story), I saw it fitting. Last edited by MangaArtist18; 05-03-2020 at 10:55 PM.. |

Limited time. Or a good reason for them not to just use it all the time.

I think more of them should just be nigh-unbeatable like Mugen or Muteki were.

Aesthetically, it just comes down to the design choices. A bulky final form can work well even if the initial suits were slim if designed well, and vice versa. When it comes to accessories like capes, I feel they only work when the show had a precedent (Such as Mugen Ghost's trenchcoat like design working because how it's a natural feeling upgrade from the normal parka ghosts).
While Kiva didn't have any free flowing parts, I feel Emperor works because the cape like portions work well to emphasize the regal nature. So, basically, if the final form has an aesthetic accessory, there needs to be a point to it, not just tacked on. As for other aspects, I feel the biggest thing a final form needs is a drawback. A reason to not use it. Kiva Emperor is infamous for being the most used final form in the franchise, and the real world reasons aside, in canon, there was no reason to not use it over his base form, as it was just a straight upgrade. The same can be applied to Hyper Muteki in Ex-Aid. What helps keep things interesting is high stakes. And when the hero gets access to a powerful new ability that has no drawbacks, the normal form becomes obsolete. The drawback doesn't always need to be life threatening, mind you. There's nothing wrong with having a drawback that could be overcome later on. Like Eiji managing to control PuToTyra by not letting pure instinct take the wheel. Just using the final form doesn't have to be a life or death situation, but just place some reason to not just use it forever.

I think an important thing, at least for me personally, is that the form represents something to the character. I think some of the best examples of this are Liner form, and Xtreme.
Liner form represents ryutaro standing up on his own, but still having his friends close by. It shows his growth as a character while keeping with the theme of teamwork and coming together. Xtreme represents Shotaro's and Philp's relation ship, now they arent just two people in one body but two bodies acting together in harmony. Mugen is another example of this since it reflects Takeru's philosphy about humanity and gains its power from reinforcing those themes.

Visually speaking, I actually really enjoy when the overall color of the final form is a near complete opposite of the rider's original form, i.e Cross-Z vs Cross-Z Magma or Ghost vs Ghost Mugen.
Another minor thing I love is when the jingle does something unique, like Type Tridoron's jingle actually being just Type Speed's jingle but the song is extended to make it sound more epic. |
