To be honest, I think Garo needs to rest for a while. The anime is being done by Kobayashi, so I don't expect too much out of it as it already looks like a generic anime. Let the series take a break and come back in 2016.
Overall, I would probably still rank Makai no Hana better than the second season, but that is more in due to the horror movie and music episodes while TOWSID comes in a way far down last place even blow Zero and Red Requiem. Nevertheless, this series could have used more episodes throughout that dealt with the main plot and some actual episodes focusing on just Crow. Like instead of that stupid episode with the girl and the fuzz ball, they could have done an episode that gave us some insight to Crow. I loved Raiga. He has the badassery of Kouga and the personality of Kaoru, but he did not need to be the center of attention every episode. |

This is a difficult series for me to give a final rating on. On the hand it was probably the most beautiful Garo has ever looked and some of the standalone episodes were among the best of the entire franchise (particularly the horror film, manga and cocoon girl ones) but on the other hand the characters were woefully underdeveloped and the story consisting of about a fifth of the episode count at most.
Basically, it did everything The One Who Shines in the Darkness did wrong right and everything it did right wrong. Quote:

I think one of the biggest overall problems with the show was that it spent a lot of episodes developing the weekly monster's backstory and character, but forgot to do the same for the actual regular cast. There were a lot of early episodes where Raiga and Mayuri didn't show up until well after the episode started because the writers were more interested in exploring the flower artist or the manga illustrator or someone. We could have spent some of that time explaining what Mayuri's deal was so that the audience could actually get invested in the issue of her humanity. We could have spent that time giving Crow a personality. The original series did such a great job of balancing the Horrors and the characters, I'm not sure where things went wrong this time. |

I finally picked the series back up and finished it. I don't care for it. On the good side of things, the action is still great (it is Garo after all) and there's a few good episodes (The horror movie episode being the stand out of the show). On the flip side, the characters are completely forgettable and the plot is a by the books scavenger hunt plot.
I HATE Mayuri. I'm not sure if it's the acting, directing, writing, or all of the above, I just hate her. I know for sure part of it is the writing as she is constantly being put in danger without any means to protect herself. If you're going to have her on the field every episode, then teach her some damn magic if you don't want your damn tool broken. I hate this character and how the show deals with her. In a nutshell, the action is good, the story is crap, and the characters are boring...oh my god, it's the Wizard of Garo. PS Okay, not THAT bad, Flowers is still watchable. Wizard is just the closest comparison. Last edited by Blade Raider; 11-16-2014 at 12:53 PM.. |

To watch Garo I won't bother digging into things in the episodes because different directors have their own way to tell the story. Things are pretty much broken at that point.
I would spend time going through the series FAST, and spend the rest if the time reading the corresponding novels. That way not only I can re-organize the images in my head, but also get the extra fillers make a better picture of the entire chapter. |

A good showrunner should have the ability to at least make a series consistent so it would not be confusing for viewers, without having to read tie-in novels. Especially people who don't give a shit for those kid of things. A good writer should be a able to write the story that are in the original spirit of said series even if they have a particular kind of writing style. There are series' that have different writers but have a rather consistent feel and are not confusing for viewers even without supplemental materials. As an aspiring writer myself, I can say GARO has some example of bad storytelling

Tell me about bad storytelling. Amemiya even admitted that he knew his project went sour in his blog.
To be honest Garo has been going through the daily lives of a makai knight who happens to be the strongest in the world. Everything isn't really tied together at all until the very end. Not only there are things being cut out due to director decisions and broadcast timeframe, they also cannot change different character perspective to show more information because those people are really bad at doing such things on TV. It has be plaguing their industry for a very long time. Not only toku, but almost EVERYTHING. Well Amemiya has said before every single series that the directors can feel free to do whatever they want in the episodes they are in charge of, and the guy is more of a visual > content person. As long as things are cool to look at Amemiya will not have any problem with them. This is why I will go straight to something more solid (ever since Future Ninja) provided by a single writer with the support of the backbone writer, than wasting too much time on Amemiya's Hyper Midnight Action Drama series. Wait, when did Amemiya say he felt Flowers turned bad? Why?

On 9/28 the day of the last episode on air.
He said they have tried their best to make something he thought was fun for a year, and yet it was really difficult to get everybody to agree to their options. He didn't go into details. Well lets see how well the upcoming coming Garo comics will do starting next month. |

Finally got around to finishing this. Despite some questionable choices, the last handful of episodes were pretty fun and enjoyable. Just, y'know, not enough to justify the horrid pacing and lack of characterization that plagued the rest of the series. I agree with an earlier statement that some of these late-comer characters should have been sprinkled in earlier and more often. That would have made a world of difference. Anyway, by far my least favorite of the franchise, at least until I start on the anime since the reviews of the first two episodes weren't that great from what I saw.
It's sad, before this series I was basically obsessed with Garo: marathoning the entire season over one week, spending more $$$ than my girl would like on merch, re-watching the whole epic again - which I have never done with anything toku, and yet this season pretty much killed my enthusiasm cold. I tried saving episodes and watching them in batches since some shows work better that way, but it didn't help me here. I hope the next live action series can be a return to greatness. |
