I personally own all three, and whilst I am a nintendo fanboy I'm also not blinded by them. See my first home console was a PS1, back then though I wasn't exactly a serious gamer. By the time the GC/PS2 gen came around I was obviously older and had grown up with a Gameboy pretty much glued to my hand, so a GC was the natural choice.
Basically I adore nintendo for it's characters and the worlds they create, their home consoles not so much... The Wii was a fun piece of Kit and had some great games, but it definitely wasn't the best looking or best connected thing on the market. The xbox was great for this though, it offered me many games that were shared between PS3 and the 360 that the Wii lost out on (Batman games, final fantasy etc) The online was fun too until i realized what a waste of money gold membership was and that my friends only played COD. My PS3 I have only owned for 3 or 4 months, and i brought it simply because I wanted to play Ni No Kuni (having followed it since it was originally announced as a DS title). We also got a 3D TV last year so we had switch over to Blu-rays in our house, so it also doubles as that for in my room. Add in the Ps plus service that i can use for both my Vita and PS3 and it's Win Win. The problem their though is that non of sony or microsofts first party offerings really appeal to me. For me it pretty much boils down to that I will always buy a Nintendo console, but purely for the games. Part of me wishes they'd just give up the home side and focus on handhelds whilst developing home console games for someone else (kind of like Sega). The other console I will likely get based on exclusives, which with the way the market is heading I can see becoming rarer and rarer (companies want to hit the biggest markets possible, hence why EA have dropped the WiiU and Bungie is going multi) I think it's just that Nintendo seem the more personal of the three and I like that. They come across as less guys in suits that just want your money, and more like friends (for lack of a better word/clear way to express my thoughts) or at least people that care about their fans more. End of the day a good game is a good game regardless of who makes it. Quote:
I never quite understood where the Nintendo mentality came from.
Link shows up? "It's the same Zelda game they've been making for the past 20 years." Samus shows up? "It's the same Metroid game they've been making for the past 20 years." And it's an inescapable cycle of annoyance that gets tossed around because the characters are the same. Bethesda makes Morrowind with better graphics and a new enemy? Praise the gods upon high. Retro Studios completely changes how Metroid is played? "It's the same game we've been playing for 20 years." I never understood where this came from, and it's an unfair assessment when it comes to, say, Mario, who has starred in various different genres of games, so, unless it's an FPS, all his games will just be called "A copy of a prior Mario game." I know I probably missed the entire point of the thread, but I'm just tired of "LINK'S FACE SHOWED UP IT'S JUST OCARINA AGAIN." We also have to think...what if they did change the characters? People would then probably say "Where's Link?" or "Where's Samus?"

And I agree Matrix.. well to a degree. I think the Zelda franchise is the worst for it, sure story changes and stuff but you can pretty much just see where they swapped one thing for another (more so recently I feel). Despite this they're still bloody good fun and don't feel worn out or tired. I think that's largely due to how long they take to make though, if it was one every year like EA sports games or COD or Skylanders etc it might be a different case. EDIT: Oh and the New Super Mario bros series. For the love of god stop using the Koopalings. The first game was awesome with its varied bosses and stuff (something I love about 3D mario games) but the sequels it's just a bit ugh... |

Pretty much the same, I dislike most FPS and realistic driving games aren't my thing. I do like the look of the PS4 game with the little rock dude that looked fun, and PS4 will most likely (unless square go for WiiU after the success of 3D) get Kingdom Hearts 3. So i think I'm edging that way slightly but we'll see after E3 =)

In the grand console wars, PC is master race.
Fact. However, that's not the point. Consoles allow for play without adjusting settings or modifying machines, which is their selling point. PC doesn't need to be brought up every time a console is mentioned.

I agree, consoles have that wonderful, "set-up and play" selling point. However considering how convoluted consoles seem to be becoming, I feel they're diluting that edge they have.

(Point) And here you are: (You) This being said though, Matrix. I do feel as if Nintendo quite literally -has- been hashing out the same thing from the 1980s. Why? Because it works. Quite literally all the Pokemon games are the same. You catch Pokemon, fight eight leaders, plot, elite four, champion. Don't get me wrong, I love the hell out of Pokemon. But, if you are too blind to see this? You may want to get new googles, mate.

Indeed. My intent was to not make it that the PC is superior to other consoles, but aiming precision, reflex control, etc. performs much better with a mouse and a keyboard.
I have a 360, but do they support USB mice and keyboards? Anyone know? I might appreciate Halo more if I could play it in such a manner. I'd like to add too, that Zelda actually improves on itself. Between Ocarina of Time, and say... Skyward Sword, the games are very different. Skyward Sword was a challenge for me. It wasn't "light four torches" and the door opens that has been around since the very first Legend of Zelda. Thanks to the Wii's hardware, that dynamic changed and made it a very difficult game to play that was quite challenging. Last edited by MnemonicSyntax; 05-21-2013 at 07:08 PM.. |
