i just want some opinions, it's not about right or wrong or nothing like that.
i was wondering does watching super sentai and kamen rider feel like a roleplaying video game? because so me it feels you want to play along/fight along with your characters and buy the toys for that. |

I will admit that watching Kamen Rider makes me want to buy the toys, more so than any other show out there.
This is a good thread, good topic. |

This thread kind of makes me want a role playing thread, but that's a bad, bad idea
Anyway, while KR and SS does make me want to play with the toys, it's not some kind of overwhelming desire to do so.

In terms of narrative I guess they do a little. Each week they fight minions before coming to a boss that requires a new weapon or upgrade. When a second player (aka the second rider) joins in there's a little element of competition but ultimately they're working together towards the same goal.
As for wanting to buy the toys, it's more down to the way the show is shot and the way marketing/ adverts are handled. Doesn't work quite as well for us, as the subs we get are usually lacking the adverts, but just imagine how hard it is for a child/collector in Japan. Constantly seeing the same actions repeated in show each week and then with similar items being used by the shows actors in the adverts. It's essentially hammered into people to buy their stuff. And finally I've always felt that a 'Tales of...' Style game would work quite well for Sentai/Rider. Bit problematic when you get to zord battles though... |

I thought I'd grow out of wanting to be a Power Ranger but as I got older and my imagination more controlled the desire only grew.
Sadly I no longer have interest in crappy recreations of the props, like I once did as a child and although I like my action figures, I just pose them, I don't play with them. The way I play out my fantasies now is through writing stories.

I honestly can't watch Sentai without getting the urge to just start buying up the mecha toys. Well that, and the ranger keys.
