Last week we learned the sad truth about Jun's past and the horrors he's witnessed.
The dark Faust appears to torment Nexus! Experience the power of the Dark Field. And the Memory Police make their presence known, are they why no one remembers The One and The Next? So let's watch Nexus 7-9!

To give this show credit, where credit is due, I do like that they go out of their way to explain things that other shows just shrug off. This show has great writing and excellent world building, it's a cool story, just not a very well executed one when it comes to basically...anything outside of the script.
I've yet to find any character I particularly enjoy or a character that really stands out - our protagonist is naive, immature and largely useless, the commander is a total bitch and pretty much everyone else is just...there. I will say Faust makes for a cool villain. Plus the fight scenes and special effects are just bad. What is it with early 2000s toku and clunky action scenes? We can laugh at the cardboard buildings and polystyrene walls now, but shows like Kamen Rider Black or sentai from the late 80s, early 90s have spectacular action sequences, whenever Nexus fights I'm reminded of a boxer in his last few rounds of the match, after he'd already taken a large hit to the face. The action was a little better in episode nine, but that is only because Faust is a badass and he was kicking Nexus' boring ass around the screen.

Forgot I hadnt seen 6 yet so I just marathoned 6-9
Pretty good, Im enjoying every bit of it. Except for Nagi. Why is she such a Naging bitch, Im sorry but she is seriously nothing more than that in my eyes so far, she has done nothing but hate on Komon and Ultraman and wants kill just everything she sees that isnt right in her eyes.

I'm through 7 and 8, will watch 9 tomorrow, most likely.
God damn, Nagi is a c... ontentious person. I hope she calms the hell down at some point, as I still really like the actress and would prefer to not want to smack her in the face every time she's on screen. Komon's kind of a moron, too, though. I can totally see why Nagi's getting fed up with his wide-eyed naivety. You know, I totally expected that dog to die. Every time you see a dog in tokusatsu it is usually going to die. I think this is only the second time I haven't seen that happen, the first being the chihuahua in Faiz. |

Some of my thoughts:
-Hey, the Night Raiders manages to take down one of the Beasts. It's good to see a Kaiju defense force score a win occasionally -The Memory Police are more than just MIB shutting people up. They are trying to restore people's peace of mine after trauamatic events. Well, at least that's how the lady presented it. There is always the posibility that was a convienent example to show Komon so he wouldn't out of line. -Gattai sequences are tough when on manual yo. I like they have to pratice to the docking before they can use the combined Chester. -A dog that survived in a SciFi environment?! That's a big surprise. -Faust is very interesting. He's definitely a serious threat to Jun. I can't wait to see more of him in action. |

Kinda okay episodes this week. The introduction of Faust and the sudden involvement of Riko in the plot are pushing the story forward a bit.Nagi continues to be an unlikable "See You Next Tuesday",we're already about a 1/4 of the way through the series and we still have no explanation for the way she is.Maybe next week we might get into her backstory...but I won't hold my breath.
Random:So I watched the first ep of Ginga the other day.Not much of a spoiler, but there's a couple of guys in it throwing trash on the side of the road like the guys in Ep 9 of Nexus.I know it's only 2 shows, but are litterers a running gag at all in Ultraman? |

Hearing the iconic Godzilla roar come out of another monster takes some getting used to
EDIT: That Faust blocking sound in episode 9 is also as part of Decade's henshin sequence, which is my phone ringtone so every time he did it I thought I was getting a message.

Something I forgot to mention about episode 8: So did the Memory Police just keep that dude locked up in his room for a week, suffering from horrific hallucinations, just in case someone needed to be proven the benefits of memory wiping? What dicks.
Anyway, episode 9. Another good one. Riko is totally getting hella murdered soon. Calling it now. In Akibaranger terms, this episode was full of "your girlfriend is going to die" flags. Also, between this and Ginga, is the Ultraman world just full of gleeful polluters? Where the hell is Japanese Captain Planet when you need him? Last edited by Switchblade; 07-19-2013 at 01:57 PM.. |

It's not specifically Ultraman, but a lot of tokusatsu which dates to the Showa era has strong environmental messages. See also: Godzilla vs the Smog Monster, Godzilla vs Gigan, Prophecies of Nostradamus, and so forth. The industrialization of Japan in the pre-war period into the 70s introduced a lot of modern pollutants into the environment very quickly, and this inspired a lot of creative folks at the time.
