See what I mean? There were a lot of fanboyish moments in Star Trek. The biggest thing in Into Darkness was the insistence on using Khan, which many have attributed to Lindelof (the Lost/Prometheus guy). It's the common problem when fans design a new movie to fit their desires too much. I personally believe that Into Darkness would be much better with Benedict Cumberbatch playing a new villain.
For some of us, it feels that the new Star Trek had not really explored its full potential as a reboot, "to go where no one has gone before", because of its continued insistence on homages. It still makes for a great movie, no doubt. But well, I think the new one would be more interesting.

Yeah, I have way more faith in the current crew than the previous one. I like Abrams, but I'm not really a fan of the scriptwriters (two of them did the Transformers series and the third one did Lost, Prometheus, Tomorrowland, etc.). I felt the scriptwriters tried to shoehorn in a lot of stuff that didn't work.
That can. But Star Trek is like Power Rangers. Budgets don't limit the quality.

Yeah. Although to be honest, I am pretty positive. Since the first director's pitch was rejected, the movie has totally changed its crew: new scriptwriters and new director. We got Simon Pegg, geek extraordinaire and smart man, to write the new one along with Doug Jung. Plus Justin Lin, director of a few Fast and Furious movies, is doing Star Trek, and that gives me some hope.
I just get the feeling that sometimes the more restricted the production is, the stronger it could be, because it forces the crew to get creative. Up until the Abrams movies, the most expensive Trek movie is The Motion Picture. The cheapest is the Wrath of Khan. And the Wrath of Khan is an enormous success for its tiny budget.
