Those were the days when Doctor Who gave me nightmares. It hasn't done that in a while, though. Terrific monster, the Silence, but the next season kind of ruined them as a threat, to be honest.

In the episode, the Doctor and his companions record the Silence by drawing tally marks on their arms to remind them about the Silence. Any Silence they see, they draw a tally mark so that they can keep track even when they don't remember. I can't give it full justice, but imagine, dark thunderstorm. Lightning flash and suddenly you see 2 tally marks on your arm. Then another flash and 30 marks all over your arms and face. And you see nothing.

This scared me for nights as my mind entertained the thought of them being in my bedroom, watching me but me being unable to remember them at all. And the episode plays to these fears.

The Silence is one of head-writer Stephen Moffat's "gimmick monsters" where the scare revolves around the gimmick. I'm sure you've heard of Weeping Angels, which he also created, where the statue moves only when you're not looking at it.

The Silence on the other hand, are aliens that have been on Earth for eternity. Their defense mechanism is that if you look away, all memory of the Silence is lost from your mind. Even recordings of them. That's how they can live in plain sight among humans since the dawn of mankind, because we never remember them. You know the sudden rush of fear, anxiety, nausea you might get that you have no idea why? The story said it was the Silence.

Eh, I felt in the end it had a decent message to tell but it definitely wasn't the focus of the piece. Still an interesting thing, though.
