Of course a war started! And it was a really epic war too.

In the final book, Voldemort secretly took over the Ministry of Magic and installed a puppet dictatorship (to create a level of uncertainty and fear instead of publicly revealing his true leadership). The Ministry began hunting down those of less "pure" blood, particularly muggle-borns. They were treated to unfair trials that accused them of stealing their magic from wizards and this misinformation was published in propaganda. Many muggle borns went into hiding and a group of ruffians called Snatchers was formed to scour the country and hunt them and the wizards who supported them (blood traitors) down.

Hogwarts began to be indoctrinated with educational curricula that taught them that Muggles were "like animals, stupid and dirty" and that they "drove wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them," and "how the natural order is being restored." Early in the book, the Muggle Studies professor was murdered, anyway.

And do things to the air that would make Jesus cry!

Sadly no...wizards couldn't care less about Muggles. I suppose when Hermione started working at the Ministry there were a few reforms in that direction, and the wizarding community got more progressive as a whole, anyway.

This reminds me, that's probably the fourth most important theme of Potter, and it ties strongly into the Destiny theme, and that is Prejudice. Blood-purity racism is extremely strong in Harry Potter, and blows into full-scale Nazi fascism in the final book.

Voldemort's father was a Muggle. Big irony, I know, but it's a fact he tries to downplay.

That's actually a good question that I never thought of before. Students are not allowed to be in possession of it, but as for the Ministry not banning it, I chalk it down to incompetence. As for Voldemort's family, they're law-breakers anyhow.

There was, and I can't remember if the movies point out this (very important!) detail, but love potions are by their nature impossible. Professor Slughorn in Half-blood Prince explains that love potions do not create true love, but rather infatuation (in my view, maybe even lust). It is impossible to artificially create love.

This even results in an important plot point. Voldemort's mother gave a love potion to her future husband to make him fall in love with her. They eloped and she got pregnant. Eventually she decided to stop using the potion in the hopes that he would still love her, but instead, free from the effects of the potion, he got frightened and ran away. She became heartbroken and died shortly after giving birth to Voldemort, hence the description of Voldemort as a human "born without love".
