It depends on what you want your Venusaur to be doing. If it's going to be attacking, then yeah, Modest is the way to go~

You don't have to build competitive oriented teams, but alright!

I don't take the game super seriously (I did way back when during Gen 3, and now I hate Gen 3 ), so I intentionally train Pokemon that aren't godmode (Like Vileplume, Xatu, etc etc), but you still have to pay attention to the stats. Imagine if your Delphox was using something like Fire Fang instead of Flamethrower. Then you wouldn't have taken out 99% of Donphan's HP

While that does work, you have to be conscious of what makes the Pokemon strong. A Pokemon could get 20 really good Special Attacks but it's special attack stat could barely be above 50 while it's physical attack stat is pushing 150.

Of course stats matter!
I don't stat whore (I'm using a Vileplume, for example ), and I pick Pokemon I like over "THE BEST POKEMON EVAR," but you still have to pay attention to their stats, less you end up with a special attacking Chesnaught

I was expecting the "Critical hit!" to pop up, but when it didn't, it was just even more jaw dropping.
So I guess this test taught me to never send Donphan out against a special attacker, since he won't survive
