NGE deconstructs mecha anime, but isn't for everyone. Lain is just a mindf*ck, but a good one at that.

And of course, there's the usual technical stuff. Pretty animation, insane amount of detail, catchy songs (YMMV), cute art.

Well I guess that's the best I can sell it, for now anyway.

I read on TV Tropes that many fans experience withdrawal symptoms after finishing K-ON. As that troper said, "it's not easy to let go of a happy childhood after being allowed to go back to it one more time" and this is probably the most spot-on description of my experience watching it. K-On is nostalgic, heartwarming and makes you believe in a better world where friendships last and friends overcome all odds to be together. I laughed, cried (both for sadness and for joy) and had so much fun with these girls. I have not seen a show that rivals it.

A common criticism of K-On is that there's no overaching plot at all, and to an extent this is true. It's really just doing stuff for the sake of doing stuff, but if you're familiar with slice of life shows, it's pretty similar. That's not to say it doesn't explore themes and ideas. Besides the fantastic focus on friendship, by season 2, there's this underlying tinge of anxiety and sadness that many final year students face at the prospect of leaving their friends. For me, this hit very close to home, worrying about the future after school, wondering if friendships can last, etc. In a sense, this show is incredibly nostalgic. Yet, the way they resolve it, regardless of how idealistic one may find it, is so heartwarming that I wept for joy multiple times.

The best one I've seen in a long time. It's about my second favorite, after Serial Experiments Lain and NGE.

Alright, so you know K-On is about 5 girls who form a school band. I think what one reviewer said about K-On is pretty accurate: it's a fairy tale. K-On gives us an idealized version of high school life, presenting the closest-knit and most lovable of friendships I've ever seen in anything. The girls, with wildly differing personalities, form bonds so close that it's thicker than blood. You see them start from their awkward beginnings to becoming the best of friends by the end.

Actually, one show I'd compare it to is MLP, in that it's about friends just doing stuff, but this show honestly (don't tell Matrix ) one-ups MLP by developing the relationships in a far more natural way. While MLP characters get closer through the lessons of life they learn each episode, K-On does away with that, and instead focuses on all the little things, significant or not, that they share. Thus, the characters grow in implicit, hidden ways that, at least to me, feel more like real-life.
