So a magical girl toku anime. Sounds awesome. I like that you said it's not afraid to be dark, yet is mostly uplifting. Characters that are energetic that way would definitely be something to watch out for.

For some reason I feel they did a live-action version too?

Actually, no K-On is 41 episodes plus one movie total. The first season is 13 episodes plus 1 OVA, though, so that's relatively short. If you don't mind, I could try to sell the show's concept to you, but I can't promise you'd like it.
