There are one or two references (chiefly with the character of River Song) that you might miss, but that didn't hinder me when I started Who with 11 last time. I'd suggest giving the 11th a try, his flavor is drastically different compared to 9 and 10, and his episodes tend to be more (in my opinion) frenetic and cinematic. And if there's one compliment, it's that Matt Smith does a good job even with some horrible writing that comes later on.

Who is a franchise that goes up and down. I love it at times, and I really disliked it at other times.

I think people find it so overwhelming because everyone tells them to start at the 9th Doctor way back in 2005. My opinion is that that's not always the best way (I'm biased because I prefer what Den-O derogatorily calls the fairy tale approach of the 11th). It's just as good to start from the 11th Doctor, who has a totally new journey, new companions and new everything. Starting from the 11th gives you...about 36 episodes plus about 5 specials, IIRC.

Or heck, why not just watch the 50th Anniversary episode? That gives you THREE Doctors right at once, although you'd spoil everything before that. Still, that is a fantastic look at what Doctor Who is, what encompasses his personality and with a bigger budget than the TV show, it looks wonderful.

All I'm saying is that anytime's a good point to jump into Doctor Who, we don't have to be so strict to start from 9th.

It's not bad, though it occasionally gets a little preachy and self-serving which is irritating. It got gradually worse as Star Trek started to become a bit of a moral and social commentator. Abrams threw those out so that's why fans hate him.

I love Star Trek because of its optimism, and sense of adventure. There really isn't anything like it, going on a journey through space with a bunch of people and learning to get along and accept each other's flaws. I suppose Doctor Who is similar, but Doctor Who is a more personal story with a much smaller cast, and the Doctor being an all-knowing alien changes the dynamic a bit.

On my part, I'm a pretty large Star Trek fan. Not the biggest in that I haven't even finished a single series, but big enough to own:

-all The Original Series (Seasons 1 2 and 3) on Blu-ray
-all The Original Series movies sans 1 and 5 on Blu-ray
-Star Trek: First Contact on Blu-ray
-Abrams' Star Trek on DVD
-Abrams' Star Trek into Darkness on 3D Blu-ray

I think that's the most I've ever invested in any franchise in terms of home video. I also have two USS Enterprise toys.

Shhh...you didn't hear this from me but Star Trek fans can be the worst fans you come across. So I've learned to be extra careful.

The gist is that many fans utterly despise the new Abrams films. They see them as abominations in the legacy of their beloved franchise and will nitpick anything and everything about them. I kid you not, one of the biggest nitpicks is how the new Enterprise is so much larger than the old one and you'll get all kinds of (admittedly cool) screenshot comparisons and analyses as people try to work out the size.

You can't go anywhere on the Internet without bumping into a hardcore Abrams-Trek hater so I've learned to be careful not to stir up arguments.
