Yeah, I get that. Actually I didn't grow up in an English speaking environment, but my parents took it upon themselves to teach me that.

Unfortunately that's not really the same, then. I can't understand Mandarin either! But I can understand my parents' dialect to a certain extent.

I'm very far from British. But to be honest I don't speak a lick of Mandarin and can read very few characters outside my name.

I guess we weren't observant!
