Honestly...I'd say play the games instead. 4 The Animation was made for the fans, as while it does give you all of the important details...the true ending is on a separate OVA, and they made some changes to it that made it confusing, from what I've heard. I still enjoyed what I saw of it. Golden I have a lot of issues with, as it treats it like a new game + because in episode 1 of Golden The Animation, they skip over EVERYTHING involving the murder mystery. If you NEED to start with anime adaptations. Go with the Persona 3 movies.

Start with 4. It's what I started with. It's on PSN for $9.99 or if you have a PS2 you can get the original, or if you have a Vita, you can get Golden. 4 is easily the most accessible in the franchise, 3 is very similar in terms of mechanics, but 4 greatly improved on what 3 had established, also 4 in my opinion has the best cast of characters out of any Persona game. In terms of having a similar premise to Dangan Ronpa? 4 is a murder mystery (except you're not trying to not get killed by other students while being trapped in a high school ) By the way, you're TOTALLY fine starting with 4, the only games that have any sort of connection are 1 and 2, 4 is a totally standalone game (Except for this one part where you go on a field trip to the city from Persona 3).
