That's right. Each Trek is Trek in its own way, emphasising different things. Abrams is a third generation, if you will. Trek was getting stale for sticking to the same style for 20 years, that's why it wasn't doing well until the new movies came out. Your parents are interesting.

Picard's Trek became synonymous with Trek because the subsequent Treks all followed his style and were set in the same time period. I guess it's understandable if people prefer that kind of Trek since Picard style Trek is pretty much the Trek for 20 years and more. But I take issue when you say Abrams' is not Trek when Picard's changed the formula himself. Trek can accommodate different styles.
