Final Gobuster and First three Kyoruger Ratings Report
 

It’s no secret that Tokumei Sentai Gobusters is one of the lowest rated Sentai shows in the franchise, but just how badly did it do as a whole? As reported by Rising Sun Tokusatsou, the rating reports from the last two episodes are out and they aren't good: with the last two episodes of the series receiving a 4.9% and 4.4% in viewers. That puts Gobusters as a whole at a viewership of approximately 4.0%!

But the downward trend continues into Kyoruger, with the first three episodes only scoring a 4.3%, 4.0%, and 3.2%.

Of course, Rising Sun’s usual source for these rating reports come from a different source, with their original source stomped out in a crackdown by Toei

These numbers may not be accurate but they seem to indicate that Super Sentai is in a downward slump, though weather or not this trend will continue for Kyoruger remains to be seen.

Zeo has a point. Ratings for shows like these don't honestly matter all that much, toy sales do. So we'll see how that goes.

That's disappointing. I had hoped Kyoryuger would inspire higher ratings. :(

So, when it comes to ratings, I'm a tad... ignorant on how they work. Is this on a scale of 1 to 10, or out of 100% or what? 4% sounds incredibly low no matter how you slice it, but I'm curious as to what the scale is.

I feel like Toei might push forward to the 40th anniversary and take it from there. Maybe retire it after that like they did for Kamen Rider for awhile. It's just a thought..

Yeah it's out of 100%. Figures are a bit dodgey though. There's probably only a few thousand people/TV owners that have a box linked to the station/ratings people. So out of their 100% (possibly 6000 or so TVs) only a small portion are watching. They then do some fancy maths stuff to try and work out the possible % for all TVs across Japan, giving you the 4% =]

Unfortunately the viewing figures don't matter much, it's as Zeo said, the Toy sales that do. Hopefully they're good.

I'd be curious to see what sort of figures Weekend kids shows do in the states and the UK though, just as a contrast.

Realy? Kyoryuger is that low? Then again, people are probably needing to get back into Sentai over the next few weeks as they are probably jaded after Go-Buster.

What was wrong with Go-Buster? I'm not well versed in recent sentai things other than Akiba.

Despite having a really strong opening, it lulled quite a bit until the late 20s. The plot never really advanced, and the show had a massive overhaul to try and combat the bad ratings it was getting. What came afterwards was (in my opinion anyway) excellent, but the damage was done really and the show never managed to win everyone back.

I think what they did afterwards was the death of the show. It was some of the absolute worst filler I've ever seen, with episodes so cliché they could have been part of pretty much any TV series. There were a few inparticular that I'd rate as the absolute worst in Sentai history.

Himoru was also a very poor Red and the team largely lacked much in the way of character development. They definitely had some good ideas, the show did start out really strong.. it just flailed for direction.

If you're referring to all the stuff they did with Enter and the Messiah cards, then you and I have very different definitions of the word "filler" :eyebrow

I suspect that the ratings slump is also due to shifting ways of watching TV nowadays. I'm guessing people just aren't that eager to watch TV anymore; that may be why toy sales haven't dropped as much as TV ratings.

Yeah, I heard Gobusters at least did well in the toy sales department.

I know you are kidding but I'd be down for that. Give the Super Sentai a year off to do Space Sheriff Gavan Type-G! :D

I'm all for a new Metal Heroes show but I'd like to see the movie before championing Gavan Type-G for it. His Go-Busters appearance didn't really sell me on the character.

Exactly. In what way at all were the episodes after 25 filler? That show moved on from filler and went full plot driven from that point on. Maybe 1 or 2 episodes excluded. The shows second half saved it from being the worst thing ever. It was incredibly entertaining in the end.

I'm really surprised Kyoryuger is doing so poorly right out the gate. The show is loud, fun, and exciting. It should be right up there for most kids. But I can see that the decline which began in the middle of Shinkengers run has just become more pronounced each year. Last year just really sunk the ratings so low but it has been progressively worse each year as well.

I was referring more to things like the Wedding episode, which were just plain painful to watch. The Messiah card arc had some interesting ideas, but once again had little to no pay off, beyond one remark Enter made about Escape. If they explored any of the ideas, it might have worked, but instead it just felt like they had to quickly throw something together to keep the show going.

The last four or five episodes were really good, but that was far too late for a show to finally become interesting. Everything from 31-45 felt like they were stalling for time. Ep. 46 was the highlight of the show for me, it was exactly what the series should have been more like from the beginning.

Question: Are these ratings for JUST tv?

I'd think so. But maybe they do count internet traffic, some companies do. I know NBC counts television and online. Through Youtube and such. Does Toei offer Kyroyuger online the day after like with Megaforce and Hulu?

I thought it was clear Kyoryu's low ratings were due to Gobuster's abysmal ratings.
It's hard for word of mouth to spread when no one is watching it to begin with, after all :p

I wouldn't expect to see ratings improve until episode 10 or so, since that would give it ample time to pull in the viewers Gobusters lost.

Right now Nielsen (the ratings agency in the USA) does NOT track online ratings but they have announced they will start tracking those numbers officially in the next few months. And by online they mean Hulu, Youtube, Apple store and Amazon.

Yes, from what I have heard that is exactly the reason why Kyoryuger's ratings are so low. Go-Buster has scorned a lot of fans but Toku in general has had a ratings slump these past few years. It also doesn't help that Japan's birthrate has been falling like crazy so there are less and less kids watching.

Perhaps they'll need to take after Toho's book and retire the franchise for 5-10 years.
It'll be painful to not have new Sentai, but it'll let them reinvigorate the franchise with new life thanks to better ideas when it returns...

If Sentai did indeed retire for a few years, it would be interesting to see how that affects Power Rangers just when its finding its footing popularity-wise again.

I don't think we have to worry about Sentai retiring for awhile as long as the toy sales and movies continue to perform well.

Considering how far behind and slowly Power Rangers is running now, they've got material from Go-Busters and Kyoryuger to take them up through 2018 pretty safely.

True, I sometimes forget how much slower it lags behind these days :lol

No Worries things will get better.

Unless Gobusters and Kyoryuger are combined for Powerforce and Super Powerforce :p

With Sentai on a break, and with less competition, maybe Takara will make another Tokusatsu. :D

Out of 50 episodes, the show had like 18 episodes that were not filler. The rest did nothing to advance the plot or even the characters. Yoko, Hiromu, and Ryuji were exactly the same people they were in episode 8.

Would a new time slot help at all?

go-busters was so bad those ratings were like PGSM ratings back in 2003.hope kyoruger picks up cause if toei is going back to dinosaurs it tells abit and they might as well do ninjas again

Well they already did the "Government agency preventing an attack from another dimension" with Go-busters, now their doing "Dinos". Ninjas are the next logical choice.
