Power Rangers Jetman
Saw the pics of Figuarts Red Hawk, and you know, I wish they'd have brought Jetman to the US. Love the Dinozords and all, but the mechs in Jetman were cool to. They would've had five rangers like Zyu. And unlike Zyu there would've been two female rangers. Because the Yellow Zyu was male, wasn't he?
|
Yeah, that would've been cool. They were originally going to do that, but decided on Zyu because Dinosaurs were popular at the time.
|
yeah its nuts thinking how close power rangers was going to be an adaptation of jetman, which i don't know if i would of liked that better or not, either way, zyuranger turned out to be the correct decision for an adaptation
|
I really don't think Power Rangers would've even been half as popular as it was if they chose Jetman. Of course this may be my own personal preference but the costumes just look lame to me. I mean, birds? Really? Sure Gatchaman pulled it off but that was the 60's. The fact of the matter is that Dinosaurs are just cooler than birds.

So cool

Dinosaurs are just cool.
That said, I think Jetman would've done just fine in the US. I didn't tune into PR because they had dinosaur themes and designs, that's for sure. I know I can't speak for everyone, but the kickass action and fighting was why I watched PR. |

And it has also kinda sorta bugged me that it's Dinosaur themed, but uses "Saber-toothed tiger" and mammoth, both of which are not dinosaurs. They're still pre-historic, so it's just a minor nitpick. And I can't complain about that without pointing out that Dragons are fictional, so I'm just going to drop it. Lol. |
As a fan of Jetman I wish it had been brought over to the US. I like the costumes and love the Mecha designs. The monster suits could have been better but Jetman was a solid show that could have totally worked in the US market. The lack of a 6th ranger really would have been the only hindrance I can see. They've played up Tommy as being a major player in the US from the beginning. Not having that available for their first series would have hurt them in my opinion.
|
They didn't play up Tommy from the start. He was introduced in the "Green With Evil" saga.
Tommy wasn't hanging around the Juice Bar in seen in any of their classes until the GWE episodes. |
I never once watched MMPR because they were Dinosaurs. The Megazord itself was solid, but Dragonzord was always better. The Thunderzords were more thought out, better designed, a more clean product. Honestly I wished the used the suits from that season of sentai, instead of rehashing the Zyu, but now I'm nitpicking to.
And Jetman could've completely worked. Yes, like Den-O said the lack of a sixth might've hindered them, but they could've done well. Introduced Tommy in season two. |
Like I said, I watched Power Rangers for the fight scenes, not the design aesthetics. :p

I must be the only person who watches PR/Sentai and not be drawn to the female characters :P

Thing is, the story would've been handled differently because there was no 6th Ranger.
We don't know how things would've turned out now. |
Yeah. I know. That's literally what im saying. The impact would be immense. The franchise could have compmetely flopped without the extra push of a 6th character and the extended stories related to that.
|
I think the fact that it was dinosaur themed too was what pushed it to the states. Because really, what kid that target age doesn't think dinosaurs are awesome?
I remember a video I saw awhile back on youtube actually, it was the MMPR intro spliced together with footage from Jetman. Wish I had the link still, cause it worked with it real well I thought. |
What everyone is forgetting is that a major reason for the success of the Power Rangers *was* the character Tommy and the Green Ranger. He solely is the reason for so much success for the franchise. There's a reason they had him re-written in to the story, produced the Zyu2 footage, and eventually brought him back as the White Ranger.
It's because the fans WANTED Tommy, they LOVED Tommy, and he became "THE POWER RANGER" of the entire franchise. To this day, people still recognize Tommy more than any other Power Ranger. Jetman would have been interesting, but it would have never caught on with as much success as Zyuranger did. The reason is because in Jetman, there would be no need to bring in a "Tommy" character like in Zyuranger. That, and if you want to get picky, the suits are so much more "team oriented" in Zyuranger than Jetman. |
I'm probably biased because I finished watching Jetman not too long ago, but I thought everything works in that series and it's too bad PR decided to go for dinosaur/prehistoric animals and thus went with Zyuranger. But in a way it kind of preserve Jetman as a sentai-only series and won't be susceptive for comparison with its PR counterpart like Zyuranger has.
|
I kinda agree with Kickback. To a lot of people Tommy is the franchise player of Power Rangers. Dude appeared in the most number of episodes, had the most number of powers and really there's a reason for that. The fans like the guy. If ever Gokaiger gets adapted to PR I'm sure a lot of people would like to see Tommy make an appearance. But with that said had Saban opted to use Jetman they would probably have written something different. First would be Trini would have been blue and Billy would be yellow.
