"Classic Super Robots"
 

With FREEing's GetterRobo coming out after two months of delays i thought i'll start the topic for Classic super robots.
My person Favorites are Getter Robo, Votes V Voltron, God Mars, and Daltanious.

I've never seen GetterRobo, I do love the Mech-Designs I've seen through the Revoltech line. And Vangelus' reveiws of them. But definately Voltron. The Lions, not the Vehicles. The Vehicles weren't horrible it was just a jumbled mess of parts. (Don't like it for the same reason I don't like G12 Explosion, or the one from Shinkenger.) God Mars, Raideen, Big Robo. And the original RX-78-2 Gundam. And last, but NOT least, GaoGaiGar. Or anything from the Brave Series, really.

I haven't seen much of the actual old shows, but I love the designs of most of them. Getter would have to be my favorite. So much so that I've already seen the Shin vs. Neo OVA and tracked down and read the original Manga. Pretty good stuff.

The Dynamic Change Getter certainly has my interest, but it's way outside my comfort zone in terms of price. Even if I had 90-odd bucks, I'd really rather spend it on something a little more substantial.

As fart as toys I have, I've got Revoltechs of the standard Getter 1 (OVA version) and Neo Getter 1, as well as Dancouga and Tetsujin 28. Neo Getter is probably the best overall package toy-wise, but Tetsujin is almost on the same level is a design I like a lot more. Dancouga was actually a disappointment to me, just because he doesn't seem as solid as the other three.

And depending on how old we're saying constitutes "classic" I have seen all of GaoGaiGar, and love it to pieces. Definitely want some toys of those guys.

Oh, and as far as shows I'd like to watch go, Voltes V is probably tops on the list of old-school shows. The problem being that I can't find it anywhere reliable. I found a dubbed version, but the dub sounds pretty awful, so I think I'd rather get the original Japanese.

Super Robot (スーパーロボット, Sūpā Robotto?) is a term used in manga and anime to describe a giant robot or mecha, with an arsenal of fantastic super-powered weapons, extreme resistance to damage unless the plot calls for it, sometimes transformable or combined from two or more robots and/or vehicles usually piloted by young, daring heroes, and often shrouded by mystical or legendary origins. This is distinct from a Real Robot, which is a mecha portrayed as a relatively common item, used by military organizations in the same manner as tanks or aircraft.

Definition according to Wikipedia. So I also take back Gundam, unless The White Devil would be an exception. Zaku is a common miltary tool, but in the original series there was only one Gundam. If not that's cool.

He is an Autonomous Robotic Life-form who does Super things. Therefore, "Super Robot."

If that doesn't work, Optimus Prime: Super Mode.

Which is your favorite: GaoGaiGar or Genesic GaoGaiGar?

For me it's definately Genesic. I just love the raw, almost animalistic, look of the brute.

Optimus Prime is definetly one of those "Super Robots."

Optimus doesn't count, whatever the mode or series.

super mode prime is a lot closer but the transformer sent part of the super robot gerne, they have made a sub-genre of their own In the mecha genre of anime/cartoons

But Optimus follows the criteria you so nicely set for "Super Robots."

Optimus is not a Super Robot. Like Gatchaman, and Tekkaman, aren't Toku because they're animated. Optimus isn't a Super Robot because he isn't summoned, no one pilots him, he isn't mystical, and though he combines with something to become Super.. he doesn't meet enough of the other criteria to count.

You can choose other things from Transformers and be close. The Gestalts, for example, are almost Super Robots. And the ones from Go-Bots. Someone help me with the name: But the power-suits they wore to combine into one massive robot.

Just like Robotech. Veritechs aren't Super Robots. They're big robots, but they're common military equitment. Like VOTOMs or Mobile Suits.

But on another question: Do the Robots from Super Robots Wars count? Like the SRX-000 for example.

If were are done here, I would like to bring an obsure robot from the 70 names Daiorja. I don't know what it is but I really like the design

Optimus has a large arsenal of weapons. In most versions, he is summoned by the Matrix Of Leadership, a mystical artifact from Cybertron's past, and evolves from Optronix/Orion Pax/Optimus into Optimus Prime through the power of the Matrix. Furthermore, he is extremely resistant to damage, and is sometimes piloted by Hi-Q.

None of which makes him a super robot, please move on.

Yes, true, but the Japanese title of Transformers usually starts off with "Fight! Super Robot Life Form Transformer..."

Optimus is a primary character in most of these series's. Therefore, he's a "Super Robot."

Come on!!!! Mystical summon, fantastic arsenal, mystical power, superior resistance to damage, frequent combination with trailer, occasional pilot!!!! What more do you want?!

Doing a little more looking into it transformer superlink, counts as a super robot anime so if we are talking of spuerlink prime the he would arguable to be one but most of his incarntions do NOT count as super robots. Can we end this now?

Like every other Filipino on the planet, I grew up watching Voltes V. Aside from that, I consider Mazinger Z, Mechander Robo and Gunbuster among my favorite classic Super Robots.

Sadly all I know of Mag Z comes from Robot Chicken, and Vangelus.

Ever since I noticed this thread and began posting, I tried thinking of an American Super Robot. And the closest I've came is from a little remembered show called Bots Master. Daiorjah is pretty cool but sadly not my cup of tea. I'm more into Tetsujin 28!

I love Mazinger Z and GaoGaiGar. Voltron and Getter Robo I like as designs but found their shows to be a bit lacking.

And while its not "classic", Gurren Lagann > all. I cannot wait for the riobot figure to be released.

If you'd asked me before seeing FINAL, I definitely would have said standard GGG, but seeing Genesic in context made me love him a lot more. But I think I'd still have to go with the "original" GaoGaiGar, mainly because that's what I was following for the bulk of the series, so I have more attachment to it.

Oh, and how could I forget Gunbuster? Probably, from an objective standpoint, the best fiction-wise. At least tied with Gurren Lagann and GaoGaiGar.

We're leaving out so many good mecha from that show too! King J-Der, Big Volfogg, ChoRyujin, GekiRyuJin, TenRyuJin! KouRyu, AnRyu! Female Super Robots, come on! Also I loved the sortof homage TF: Animated did when Safeguard transformed like the ones from GaoGaiGar.

Oh yes, of course. Volfogg is probably my favorite out of the secondary characters, but honestly, with a cast like GaoGaiGar's, that's kinda like picking your favorite child.
