Jason David Frank in talks with Saban about a PG-13 Green Ranger solo movie?
IGN has posted an article today that Jason David Frank wants to do a solo PG-13 Green Ranger movie. According to JDF he has been talking to Saban about a slightly darker take on the fan-favorite MMPR character. All he needs is Saban's backing.

There is no way in hell this will happen :lol
|
...I would watch it, i don't see it being PG13.
|
:lolol
I can believe in a dark Superman movie. I can believe in a dark Batman movie. I can believe in a dark Aquaman movie. I can believe in a dark Deadpool movie. This is because there is material to work with in all four of those concepts. How in the world can you make the Green Ranger a dark and gritty character? |
I can't see this happening.
Ever. |
So an original kid-friendly character, in a movie not so kid-friendly when the kid-friendly show is still airing said kid-friendly shows. Yea this will work, because parents wont pay attention to fact that it is PG13 all theyll see is Power Rangers.... And how the hell could one make it work? Though if it does.... I can thelp but think that this would open the door to possible Rider in USA....

The problem word for me is Solo. Power Rangers are a team, if this was some how Kamen Rider which is a lot of the time mostly at the start a solo hero and has darker tones then this would make more sense

The problem word for me is "PG-13." I mean... this is Tommy Oliver. The only black mark on his record was "Green with Evil," and that wasn't even his fault. How are you supposed to get a PG-13 story about Tommy Oliver to work?
|
Open with Kimberly dying and Tommy wanting to get vengeance for his ex-girlfriend.
Badaboom. Instant PG-13. |
This just seems like the silliest idea ever. It blows my mind that JDF thinks he carries THAT large of a fanbase, enough to warrant a film essentially just about him. There's no way something like this could ever work. I admit there's a huge wave of nostalgia for people my age and older with him right now but there's just no way this would ever happen.
|
JDF, we love you but the show is called Power RangerS. There can't only be one.

The man's ego is stunningly large. Wow.

In a not so kid-friendly movie while the kid-friendly shows are still airing: TF1/Animated, ROTF/Animated, DOTM/Transformers Prime And in ROTF, Optimus went vicious psycho killer, ripping Grindor's head in two with hooks, and then is promptly killed by Megatron with a sword stab through the torso, followed by a massive gun blast through his spark chamber. Ripped off The Fallen's face. Plus all of the killings done in DOTM. It did work. Parents and kids went to see the trilogy in droves. Mothers even approved of the first film (it's true!) And now with the Dinobots in 4, plus Jurassic Park IV coming, kids will line up to see it. So, it's most certainly not impossible. It just has to be handled right. RPM, while not perfect, had moments that aimed themselves at adults over kids and it worked. Won quite a few people back, such as myself. Saban will never go for it, unless someone shows him he'll make beaucoup bucks off of it. Impossible? No. Gonna happen? Probably not. If it does? Probably going to be terrible. |
I have no words.
This is just... Huh? WHA? Unless he's dressed as a grasshopper or beetle, this is just cuckoo. |
I read this is another interview and thought little of it. I didn't realise he was actually serious about.
Wow, JDF needs to reel in his arrogance and realise that he does not carry the franchise on his own. |
JDF and his overly huge ego never fails to disappoint.
This isn't ever going to happen. It's a bit funny that he thinks that he alone has enough popularity to carry an entire movie when it'd be a gamble making a Power Rangers movie now in the first place. And PG-13? Kid, you're dreaming. Quote:

With the way Saban pushes Mighty Morphin' and fuels the nostalgia fans, more than recognising what an incredible franchise it is as a whole, if there was any single Ranger to get a movie, it would be Tommy. I mean this is probably unlikely to happen, but I am really surprised by the reactions, not so much to Tommy but more the likeliness of this happening with all we have seen.
|
As for the PG-13 rating, it would be easy for the film to get that. Just show Tommy a little beat up/bloody or have some really intense battles with big explosions. Heck, the tiniest bit of swearing will do it.
I can see it working and be a success, but it'll be like transformers where kids love it and most fans loathe it. Want to know my plot? A new alien threat is discovered. To combat it, a secret government organization extracts the Dragonzord from Angel Grove Harbor (where it should still technically be). They reverse engineer the ranger powers from it, tapping into the morphing grid, and assemble a new team of 5 core rangers, however, they are inexperienced and unfamiliar with the equipment. Desperate and with armageddon fast approaching, they turn to Tommy, the only man capable of training and mentoring this new team. Tommy initally dislikes the new team because he's comparing them to the original, his friends. He disbands and tries to take on a large group of monsters on his own but he starts to get his ass handed to him and is about to be killed when the new team shows up saves him, gaining his respect. In the end, Tommy would sacrifice his powers/zord to stop the threat but state that the world doesn't need him when it has the new team. An end-credits scene shows the research/develop team secretly working on something. Zoom in on the white ranger logo, panning out to reveal a modernized saba and parts of a white ranger suit as people bustle around. Bam. Simple, but it would reintroduce the already rich mythos of mmpr and open it up for further sequels. |

I would love if this movie was made. I loved JDF in Season one of MMPR and Dino Thunder so I hope a movie like this gets made. And CGI Dragonzord would be awesome, even if its just for one fight scene.
My main worry is the viallain. I feep like Saban would fuck it up. |
JDF does realize he is a Power Ranger right? Solo heroing is the shtick of Kamen Riders.

This sounds like a 90's kid's fanfiction, not something I'd take seriously.

Historically Saban is a rather shrewd, cheap, businessman as are his companies. Unless there are MAJOR profits to be made on something like this it won't happen. And since there aren't profits to be made, it won't. One character/actor that most people remember for several season of a TV show that's 20 years old, doesn't equate to a money making theatrical release. It's completely unrealistic for Frank to even begin to think it's possible, and it's crazy that he thinks he has that kind of pull to make a movie possible. I get that he's an icon to a lot in this fandom. But he isn't an A B or even C list actor. It's just a possibility no matter how much he thinks of himself. Again, not trying to beat anyone down here. This is just a highly unrealistic situation. |
Plus, if Saban is to put money into anything, I'd rather we got an entirely original Power Rangers series. Between the Titanium Ranger and copious amounts of new footage we got through Disney's series it felt like we were getting so close. Then Samurai happened and it all went downhill from there.
|
It'd be pretty cool to get a completely original series. I certainly wouldn't be against it.
|
Especially as bad as Gobusters and kyoruger look(design wise) i would love it, not to mention saban proved they could make a quality original series before-mystic knights.
|
As others have stated, there is little financial gain in this for Haim Saban. JDF may be the face of the franchise and that's cool but the only way to truly get him back is to have him return as a regular in the TV series and make it a movie from there. He can't carry a whole movie - at best a straight to DVD feature.

The strength of the Wolverine movies is that they have so much good source material to pull from for story ideas. A Green Ranger film would start from scratch in the story department and that would probably end horribly. Combine a terrible script with a lead with no real 'star power' pull (outside of the fandom) and it's a recipe for disaster. Sure, some would see it for nostalgia's sake but that will only get you so far. I'm all for JDF headlining another MMPR film, but it's got to have a good supporting ranger cast and a good script to back it up. |
Maybe he can do a kickstarter campaign. Save Saban from spending his money, he'd just have to let it happen and keep the rights once it was done.
I don't know how much something like this could possibly raise, but I was watching that whole SDCC exclusive morpher thing - they sold out $100k of product like it was nothing. So there's money in the fanbase, especially if the rewards are good. Look at the Veronica Mars kickstarter - I'd say the MMPR fanbase is much larger and potentially more rabid. |
Indie film?
|
I hope this happens! It would be great since Tommy is an epic power ranger forever! I would love to see a PG 13 movie based on his character!
|
what was the Veronica Mars kickstarter for?
