Power Rangers 2016 Movie, Possible Director?
 

According to The Wrap at least, our reboot may have it's director.

Previous and possibly most notable credit being the "found footage" time travel film The Almanac Project.

Well it's great we may have a director for this but The Almanac Project kinda got mixed reviews.

I'm of mixed opinion of this. It could go either way with him at the helm.

And by "loved," I mean "never heard of."

I would have liked a more seasoned director. Project Almanec didn't get good reviews. On the positive side, Dean Isrealite is a huge Power Rangers fan so maybe it could work.

I know what the Almanac project is but i really don't know who the director is.

Exactly the tier of director I expected a Power Rangers movie to get. There's no way such a doofy, silly franchise was gonna get anything better.

I was honestly expecting somebody like Michael Bay to take up the project. That's not a joke i was actually expecting that.

Honestly? Bay is too big for Power Rangers. Transformers has had many differnet tonal interpretations, but 99% of Power Rangers is utterly goofy, badly-dubbed kids show for, like, little kids.

I thought The Almanac Project kinda sucked. The movie was not bad, but it could have been much better. I did remember seeing a MMPR White Ranger toy in the movie, so I do find that funny now.

If the movie has a good script then he might pull it off. I remember people had iffy feelings when Edwards was announced to direct Godzilla back in 2011 and the movie end up being better then most people thought it was going to be.

According to Variety, Lionsgate made a "lengthy search that saw several top-tiered directors vying for the job" but choose Israelite. His pitch blew them away:

I still hope the movie is not coming out next year. Have you guys see how pack next summer is? The movie is going to be buried alive from other movies. I want the movie to be a big hit and become a major film franchise similar to Marvel, DC and Transformers. I really want this movie to turn out good but my feelings are 50/50 right now.

That's what Lionsgate wants too. A franchise with sequels and spinoffs. Box office numbers will determine if they will invest in it after the first movie.

Good marketing and good word of mouth will help the movie be a big hit. If the movie sucks and bombs then the series should be fine. They will still make new shows and Saban won't end the series if the movie sucks.

I think if the movie is good then it can help PR become a bigger franchise. Look at Transformers before 2007 and Transformers now. Transformers after the movie became a bigger franchise seeing had comics from IDW, video games from Activision and numerous releases from Shout! Factory. I think the new movie can make Power Rangers more mainstream. It would be nice if people know about Power Rangers outside of MMPR. More people can check out the more recent shows and discover Super Sentai as well.

I don't wanna be overly negative or anything but this sounds like "We tried getting someone people know but couldn't & this dude wanted it so why not? The first guy left so what choice do we have?". I could be totally wrong of course, but I don't feel very confident with their main director jumping ship for Star Trek, having to take this long just to get a director & then have about a year or so to cast, film, edit & whatever else they need to do before the desired release date next Summer which will be filled to the brim with movies the general public actually cares about. Might just be cynical, but I don't have high hopes for the movie ATM.

Just out of interest, since when was Project Almanac called The Almanac Project?

I only ask because it doesnt ever seem to have been called that.

I highly doubt that this movie will come out next year. They had to begin shooting this by now if they wanted to get it out in time. I expect this to come out 2017 or 2018.

You folks set your expectations too high. You sit here and talk about wanting top-notch directors, yet complain about the likes of Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams and how they "ruin your childhood".

Don't you think it's time for someone new to take the helm and bring a new vision to the table instead of constantly seeing the same styles over and over?

The constant need of big names is what's gridlocking the industry and stifling creative evolution. Just take it as it goes and ride with it.

I think it's a bit of a narrow timeframe, but it could still happen. Lionsgate has a penchant for having very tight shooting schedules. Divergent, for example, was shot in April 2013, with the movie released in March 2014. Using this timeframe, and considering a July 22, 2016 release date, they still have a few months in pre-production before beginning shooting.

To be honest I'm not one to take place too much interest in directors, but its nice to see someone potentially attached to the project. Give me some visuals and then I'll start being interested.

Divergent really isnt the best example of how to make a quality product in a short amount of time :lol

I won't comment on whether it speaks well for our movie. :lol But in the minds of Lionsgate, it's a possibility.

But yeah it could happen that they manage to bring this out on time. Even if I dont think they should. Just hoping that they announce a cast in the near future.

I like the news. I haven't seen Almanac Project, but I still like the news. Not to jump down the rabbithole of this fandom and bitch at every name except my dream director (Joss Whedon), but honestly I'm just glad it's not Micheal Bay.

At this point I'll take anyone other than Micheal Bay. And Uwe Boll.

I am sure that there's at least one PR fan out there who honestly thought we had a chance at getting Chris Nolan. :lol

Have you seen the summer movie line up for next year? It's pack as hell and the movie is going to be buried alive. The movie comes out in July along with other major movies that come out in July 2016 such as:

Tarzan
Ice Age 5
Star Trek 3 (Star Trek XIII)
Ghostbusters reboot
The Bourne Betrayal

Finding Nemo 2 and Independence Day 2 will likely still be playing in theaters by the end of July.

Robert Rodriguez is a pretty good director. I'm not sure if Power Rangers is his cup of tea though. I don't think the rumors of him wanting to direct Power Rangers are true.

He did the Spy Kids films so silly kids entertainment isnt unusual for him. But yeah I dont think those were more than just rumors.

He also did the movie Shorts a while back a few years ago. I remember hearing nothing but awful things about that movie. Not to mention the ads for that film looked terrible anyways. I think RR could do a Power Rangers movie with a good script but I don't think he is a good choice for Power Rangers in my opinion.

At least they could have got someone worst like Micheal Bay, Uwe Boll, Roland Emmerich or Stephen Sommers :P.
