Atop The Fourth Wall Examines Zyuranger
The mind behind "History of Power Rangers" takes a moment to watch some Sentai:

I didn't anticipate this.

Well, it's interesting to see an input on Sentai from a PR fan with no interest in Sentai.
I wonder if we can get him to overview Dairanger through Patreon once it comes out from Shout! Factory. |
Someone needs to get him to look at Shinkenger, preferably before or directly after he reviews PR Samurai.

You think Linkara would do Kamen Rider stuff if he set a patreon tier that high?

I could only get through a few minutes of this. That guy is awful. Why does he do that voice?

As far as the actual content goes, he went in with this incredibly negative attitude and then just talked about everything in a smarmy, condescending way, offering absolutely no useful or amusing insight. Maybe I'm just not getting it. |

If you consider Patreon and ad revenue as payment then yes, people pay him for this. |

Maybe after watching this video, someone who otherwise wouldn't have will end up checking out Zyuranger. So that's probably a win. |

He's negative because most Sentai fans who watch his show are constantly pestering him to watch the Sentai instead, so while he'll be true to his word and will follow through on a Patreon sponsored review, he doesn't have to like the clear "watch this thing, it's better" attitude that his fans are trying to shove on him. Though maybe the guys who suggested this particular review were being nice about, who knows. The fact is, since he's started his "History of the Power Rangers" videos, guys have been pestering him equal to if not nore then the TeamFourStar crew, as if he owes them the videos or that they're paying him for a service he doesn't provide (prior to the Patreon account, this was not the case). |

Don't get me wrong, it's a great song. But even the best song gets tiring on repetition. |

I finally watched this and I enjoyed it. I don't agree with everything he says, as he did let his Power Rangers nostalgia fanboy take over areas of it, but he does make some great points. Plus, I was entertained.

Out of curiosity sake, is he saying the Powerful Rangers was better than Zyurangers? I have too little time right now to watch it.

Some of it he made great points as to why he liked the MMPR better, but there were other points that he said that are only because he grew up on MMPR. Such as the stuff dealing with Clotho and Helfried. |

I mean, he says it all the time, but I guess it will never be enough: his views on Power Rangers and his videos on them are all opinion-based. It's what he likes better, not what he thinks is better, and if he does think something, he'll offer reasons for thinking as such, but it's always going to be his opinion. I think he actually starts every HOPR like that now because people just don't fucking get it. He gives really good reasons for his thinking, too. Like he said, he doesn't care about the Sentai, because he's not into it the same way he doesn't care about anything he's not into. It's not being mean-spirited or ignorant, he just doesn't give a shit because it's not an interest of his. Quote:

The problems are evident any time he tries explain or rationalise things that have mundane explanations and it's even worse when he starts lavishing praise where no credit is due ("the writers where so smart and forward thinking by not overusing the Green Ranger!"). It's enjoyable enough as a brief overview for each series, but he's trying to be the SFDebris of Power Rangers, which he doesn't come close to achieving. On the flip side, I see endless comments along the lines of "Ha, take that Sentai snobs!". As is evident by this very topic. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but the pettiness, anger and jealousy all seems to come from that side, not the Sentai fans. |
I have to agree there. Like in his Jungle Fury review he said he was confused as to why the masters suddenly showed up in animal forms (which was a scene taken out of Geki). If he had just taken the time to check out something of Geki, even if he just did research of it, he would have learned that.
Like I said, I enjoyed it. He made a lot of great points, but he also let his inner PR fanboy control his opinion of it at times. That doesn't make him wrong, it just makes him come off a little... can't think of the word I'm looking for... |

Wasn't a fan of this video to be honest. I've had issues with his videos getting progressively longer because they spend less time on interesting discussion/critique and more on recapping for a while now, but I felt this video especially suffered from it.
His attempts at humour fell pretty flat with me too, but that's more of a personal taste I guess. I agree with those here saying there have been plenty of times where he could have taken a second to check out the relevance of something in Sentai too. I don't expect him to watch the shows at all (why should he, he's already said he isn't interested and I can respect that) but if something just doesn't make sense in Power Rangers simply referring to that moment in the Sentai and pointing out why it doesn't work here adds a lot more credence to his arguments. |
