Kamen Rider Ghost Episode 1- "OPEN MY EYES!" Discussion
Time at last to meet our new hero! :D
Takeru is a young man training to be a ghost hunter. Can he live up to his fathers' legacy??? As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. Kamen Rider Ghost airs at 7PM EST during this block. |
looks like this guy is ready for episode 1,
https://twitter.com/onsoku_wedge he just made the suit: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CQYyC8ZVAAAL2JP.jpg:large awesome. |
I wouldnt be surprised if the black eyes will make it easier for the suit actor to see during more actiony scenes.
|
Was going to try to watch the stream, but that lag is extreme. I'm out. Looks neat so far though.
(no op though, rip) |

The lag was tough, but overall I believe I'm going to enjoy this show. I can't wait for subs.

Opening theme that played at the end was AWESOME.
Nice debut. And great to see this fine gentleman again. http://i.imgur.com/aNI7UuY.jpg |
Hmm… I thought it was my computer that was causing the lag. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one experiencing it. This was my first time live-streaming Super Hero Time as I normally wait until it is available elsewhere, hence my ignorance. :o
But my excitement for Ghost was so strong, that I just couldn’t wait! And I’m so happy I didn’t; this year’s instalment looks to be a fun one! Squee! Nishime Shun is adorable. >/ / /< |
So much jam packed into one episode. The pacing was a little weird at the start, but I felt once Takeru finally transformed, things got really good. Still can't wait to see the opening theme proper next week.
And, MAN is the soundtrack amazing. |
Overall, it was a very fun episode. I love how they combined the mystical parts of the Ghost theme with a trendy and light style without dragging the other aspect down in some way.
The actors made a good first impression. The opening theme is okay, but personally, I didn't find it very spectacular- I'm more of a Surprise Drive type, I guess xD Couldn't help but snicker at the 15 heroes story though- Billy the Kid and Beethoven as heroes seem pretty weird xD |
For those interested, here is Mr. Nishimura, the actor who plays Takeru's dad Tenkuuji Ryu, circa 1988:

Episode was pretty fun. I like the tone it has going for and I liked the comedy a lot. The characters are enjoyable so far and the story has a nice bit of mystery to it.
Looks like its going to be a fun year. |
I am going to assume when they reach the 99th day mark a power-up will be introduced.

and Beethoven can be a hero as he overcame his own disability to further improve his art. |

I'm more interested in Ghost than Drive, sorry Shinnouke!
Are they ditching the 2-parters? Because 2 evolved Ganma got destroyed pretty quickly. |

I have a question, does the Ore Eyecon count towards the 15 Takeru needs to get, or does he need 15 other eyecons?
|
I wonder if Akari and the monk will know about Takeru being Ghost. Maybe they'll meet the little ghost and the old man too.

When Sennin was explaining some Eyecon thing to Takeru, some diagram of many eyes appeared, could this be some hint towards future forms or...? .

While we wait for subs, here's some clips of Ghosts' first henshin and fight!

I thought this was a strong start. The fight scenes were cool, and I'm really liking the Ganma designs. The soundtrack is noticeably good as well. Looking forward to more!

Quite enjoyable first episode, the main character seems to a very reluctant hero at this stage so it will be interesting to see how it progresses.
At first I was wondering if they once again would make it so that no fatalities happened in the show since drive already had so many deaths, and then spear dude attacks a carnival ride........... And flings it with people in it to their exploding doom..... Pretty sure it was full, and probably with kiddies in it... Guess I was worried for no reason o.o |
Just glimpsed into the RAW and noticed something:
Have they completely stopped using fireworks for the impact effects? The cannon fodder-guys splatter black CGI blood all over the place and even the sparks of clashing swords are computer generated. Is this a thing now or will they start using fireworks again after 3 episodes when they realize their budget's flying out of the window? Haven't watched the whole episode yet, I’ll wait for subs. |
They generally use a combination of both practical effects and CGI.
Looking at the raw I can see explosions being used here and there so they are still using pyrotechnics. |
That's not hat I mean though, I mean the pyrotechnics used in close combat. You know, sparks fly when someone get's hit?
I think I watched all fights from the RAW and everything in it, "blood" and sparks, was CGI. |

I understand there's a lot of new people involved with this show, maybe that's why - Gaim was Gen Urobuchi's first toku so he was bringing a different sensibility compared to someone who's a veteran of Rider who is used to writing 2-parters. That's my theory anyway. Waiting for subs before I watch, but good to see positive things being said already. Hope they keep it up, I don't want to slog through 20+ episodes before something interesting happens (Looking at you, Drive). |

I know what you meant and having seen the full raw and checking before answering you, while yes there is clearly some CGI sparks here and there and the Ganma clearly lose a black liquid that then fades away etc. You can clearly see actual sparks and tiny bursts at times meant to create smoke so its not all CGI, its a combination. CGI for the Ganma when they take damage makes sense since they are essentially evil spirits, there are some actual sparks in some of the shots when Ghost gets smacked/sliced/stabbed/poked and we will likely have more of that as the show continues. Some of the sword swings used CGI yes indeed, but there was some sparks that clearly used actual practical effects and doing the smoke in CGI would be a colossal waste of money. |
Do we have any idea when Spectre's meant to show up?

Anyway I decided to watch the raw since waiting is for nerds. I was satisfied to find that my japanese let me understand something like 70% of what was being said, so that was nice. Episode was really good imo, pretty fun stuff overall. Nice fights, great music. With this established cast and locations I guess the initial idea that Ghost would travel the world is all but dashed, though. Which is sort of a shame, because it was a pretty cool idea. Show looks good as it is though. I hope the Blank Eyecon and the Ganma Eyecons get toys sometime... |
I checked out the RAW, but I'll wait for the subs before forming an opinion. Gotta say though, that puppet is absurdly stupid and annoying, and the wirework when he first "flies" is laughably lame.
|
Watched the RAW and fell in love with the show without subtitles. Hoping the context that the subtitles fill will endorse my love of this new hero.
