NYCC 2015 Gamera trailer
Well this is probably the biggest Toku surprise by New York Comic Con. It seems like the teaser for the Gamera reboot which thought to be dead has been released. Gamera's last major film was Gamera: The Brave in 2006. Shigenori Takatera (Kamen Rider Kuuga) is the central person at the helm for the film. The trailer seems to give out a more darker and gritty feeling to it compare to the other past films in the series.

I'm usually in the "No CGI in my Toku movies please"-guy but I have to admit, this looks pretty awesome.
|
The trailer had me jumping for joy too and I'm not even a big fan of Gamera. Now Toho, your move with Shin Godzilla. The CG was pretty good looking for a Toku film. Most CG in live action stuff in Japan looks pretty terrible expect for the CG in the live action movie of Starblazers in my opinion.
|
Still protecting the kids, eh, Gamera?
Looks pretty nice. The CG was alright, so no complaints. I'm most especially curious if a dark take on Gamera can really work. |
I love it!!! This is so fucking awesome. Can't wait for it to be released!
|
Gamera III can be pretty dark for a kajiu film market to kids. 2016 we'll be seeing both Godzilla and possibly Gamera on the big screen in Japan. It's gonna be awesome!
|
Ahhhhhhhh!!
So much hype. I love Godzilla but Gamera always comes out top for me. Cannot wait. |
Well that was pretty gruesome.
|
According to August Ragone, the trailer is only a proof of xoncept trailer. This is to show what the producers want to make, this isn't from an actual film. I hope enough buzz can help the movie get made for once!
|
The only thing I know about Gamera is that he's full of turtle meat...this looked pretty cool though. I may watch a full movie of it.
|
That looks awesome. I've been wanting to get into Gamera for a while now and that looked great. I think I might go watch some of his movies soon.
|
Shredder won't be dining on that turtle as soup that's for sure.
Looks good so far. |

Thankfully this was just a concept trailer because I thought the CGI was awful and the desaturated colors (making it look like a DC movie) did not help matters either. If they actually do that with actual suits and puppets though, this movie should be awesome.

To be entirely honest, I don't think a suited Gamera would really work. I've always found Gamera's movement to be awkward and too stiff, and I think he would be one of the few Kaiju that would benefit from being turned CG.
|
The Gamera trailer seem like it was trying to be inspire by the style of Godzilla 2014. I do like this tone that this movie may have and the action in the trailer was awesome. We haven't had a more serious Gamera film since 1999.
|
That reminds me, what's the consensus on the Heisei Gamera trilogy?

I'll go with those. I've been wanting to see him for a while. |

I forgot that they even announced a new Gamera movie, so a trailer was a nice surprise. Looks pretty cool! I'd watch a movie like that.

Calling them perfect and some of the best is highly overrating them IMO.
They are good and extremely fun movies, but suffer from severe flaws. "Guardian of the Universe" is so decent that it is forgettable, I watched the movie recently and I hardly remember a single thing other than the Gyaos and the silly plans of the military to catch/end it. The Atlantis-theory they bring up with this movie is really nice but it never goes anywhere besides giving Gamera a back-story. "Awakening of Irys" is too strange and confusing for its own good, and the monster fights aren't very fun to watch. The only interesting character, the girl who hates Gamera and has nightmares is completely screwed up with the Irys-thing, because as soon as Irys shows up the girl doesn’t matter anymore, even though the plot wants you to think that she does. But she turns into a plot-tool and her feelings are completely irrelevant which is a damn shame. Having the girl grow a monster out of hatred and spite that she can control instead of simply fueling it with her emotions would’ve been much more interesting. "Attack of Legion" is the best of the 3 IMO, the monster is memorable, the early attacks on the humans are surprisingly scary and the action scenes with Gamera are really good. It's also one of the few Toku-movies where the military is generally competent, makes good decisions and in the end works together with the good monster. Without having a giant robo to take action in the fight themselves. But in the end none of the Gamera Heisei movies come even close to beating Godzilla in his prime IMO. Especially the late Heisei Godzillas and some of the Millennium ones. I would still recommend them for Kaiju fans, they are much better than the silly Gamera "Friend of all Children"-shit that came after the first few movies, and the three Heisei movies are definitely Gamera at its best, but I would still choose Godzilla over them every time. I guess you could call them some of the best if you refer to the fact that there is such a small selection of Kaiju-movies to choose from after the 80's and 90's, but I would still rate them more realistically. |
I wouldn't say they are perfect, but they are some of the best Kaiju films around, especially the third one. Not to mention they put all of the 90s Godzilla movies to shame. Unlike Toho, Daiei actually cared about making sure the miniatures looked realistic and that the monsters could actually move. The Gamer movies were more than just laser light shows.

Confusing characters, lackluster monster fights, setups that go nowhere – no matter how good your miniatures are, if you only use them for a couple of minutes and for like one big fight it doesn’t really matter. |
The Gamera trilogy are hands down my favourite kaiju movies, with Guardian of the Universe being my personal favourite of the three.
The only Godzilla movie that comes close in terms of actual quality I think is GMK, which can't be a coincidence since they all share the same director. |
Man, I just realized I never finished the trilogy. Damn. Seems I missed out.

However, my opinion may change once I review the trilogy, we'll see. Nevertheless, I may be a Godzilla fan first and a Gamera fan second, but that doesn't mean I'm going to ignore the garbage like GvsSpaceG or GvsMegalon. |
Is it really fair to bring up Vs Megalon? That's from Godzilla's infamous low point, not one of the bad movies from a rather decent line up, like Vs. Space Godzilla...

I don't agree on vs King Ghidorah. It was the last movie that felt like Toho actually tried to make. The plot was stupid and the actors for the Futurians were awful, but at least you can have fun with it compared to the abysmal boredom of the movies after it. The monster fights were done well too. Oh god, now I'm sounding like the bitter old men at Sci-Fi Japan when it comes to the Heisei series. STOP IT!!! <pinches self>
I also think Godzilla vs SpaceG is one of the worst Kaiju movies ever made. |
