Instant Reaction - The Movie Suits

I like them, but I think they could use some work. As I've mentioned before, the gloves and boots need more white, and they really need belts.
|
I don't like them at all.
|
I do not enjoy the look of these suits.
|
I'm not a fan. The suits themselves look generic and you can find similar styled suits in probably a good number of other movies. But averag meh is one thing. Those helmets though are hideous and are what bring my "Meh" to a "Yeah these are bad."
|
Hollywood tends to have bad a habit of copying certain themes, don't they?
Seems whenever a certain big thing comes along, everyone wants to copy it in some way. Nolan Batman suits were a thing for a while, then is was Tron suits, now its Iron Man armor. I'll say this, I can at least tell who everyone is. But I do not think these designs are particularly good. They have bad color balance, and are overly complex in their ascetic design, yet lacking details the original had (such as the helmets). Red in particular comes off looking more like an Ultraman with a wrong helmet than he does a ranger, due the the lack of a repeating diamond pattern and use of silver. Or Lord Zedd. I did not expect spandex, I did not want an exact repeat of the shows suits. Different is fine under the right conditions. But the execution here is poor and lazy, resulting in a remarkably generic looking team. |
Uh.... they sort of look like the MMPR Rangers. The suits look off to me, but I can't quite put a finger on it. Its just too ornate, and nothing really stands out. I keep getting lost in the detail, and not in a good way. Reminds me of the Micheal Bay Transformers, they are just hard to look at.
|
I like 'em i guess, there's not really anything wrong with them and i think the overall costume looks good, something about the helmets feels really wrong.
|
I have no wrong feelings one way or the other.

They ugly.
Though I'm not really a Power Rangers fan and I have no real interest in the movie either way, so I'm not losing any sleep over it or anything. But they ugly. |
I will have my thoughts later on - (long post).
|
No. These look like it's those Asylum parodies instead of a reboot. The 1995 suits is way better and represents what a big budget design of the suit would be.
|
I saw these yesterday. Didn't like them then, probability will not like them anytime soon, but I'm OK if other people like them.
It's just feels like they copypasted Iron Man here for me. Hollywood has no imagination these days. |
These re-designs don’t scream “Power Rangers,” which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I mean, a costume doesn’t reflect on how good a film will be. If a film is well-written, then that something that looks out of place could be overlooked if it’s not too glaring. That could be applied to anything, really.
Ultimately though, I’m not sure how I feel about them. When I first saw them, my initial reaction was, “Ew!” They look like they belong in a film that’s dark and edgy or another toku. They kind of remind me of Go-Busters. |

I'll post here what I did on social media. This movie isn't supposed to be your childhood. Your childhood is streaming on Netflix. They needed an update, a new design, and that's what they gave us. Look. It's like with Rita. It's one static shot done all in CG. A shot that probably isn't even in the movie at all. They'll more than likely look much different in motion in actual shots from the movie. So keep that in mind.
|
And then they talk we should avoid copying the imagination of others.

I like Go-Busters. :o |
I was going to save final judgement until later but whatever; the costumes alone without any context look horrid and clunky.
As much as we mock how the mid 90s MMPR movie costumes would get torn around the groin area during filming, I say that the level of detailing was probably adequate compared to these cause this is too much. Aside from Jason's head you can hardly tell if the other four are the respectable animal motifs they claim to be cause they all look like mutant stingrays. I think they should have hired the folks who worked on the S.I.C figures, Ando and Takeya, cause as much as they like to detail stuff up themselves they got a decent barometer on how far you can deviate from the source material. Bottom line; excessive details need to be taken out and need to be slimmed down. |
The uniforms should be like the Captain America uniform.
|
I don't get it, everybody says that the red ranger's helmet is the only one you can discern. Does nobody look? Pink is very obvious as well. And if you zoom in you can see the details on black's and blue's. Quit being lazy guys and actually look, not glance.

Would you notice that the Black Ranger has tusks on his helmet? Or that the blue ranger has triceratops horns? Of course not, because they're design cues shared by everyone. They're just mildly modified, but because it doesn't expressly standout on first look, it's hard to even realize they're there. The Red Ranger's tyrannosaurus motif and the Pink Ranger's Pterodactyl beak are obvious because they're front and center and far more different than, say, the Mammoth "Trunk" on the black ranger. |

I'm not saying the mammoth's trunk isn't obvious, I'm just saying it's not as obvious as the pterodactyl beak.
Meanwhile, you gotta squint and zoom to find the mammoth tusks, see the difference in the triceratops' side extension to realize the horns, and I can't even find a notable feature about the yellow ranger. The features are all there, but to a fan just looking at the still image for about 10 seconds and only having red and pink pop in terms of detail isn't that good, especially when, in the film, they'll be in constant motion. |
These just do not sit right with me. At all.

I dunno, they all look like mutant stingrays still. Maybe the Pink Ranger's helmet somewhat resembles her motif, but the other three, though distinct from each other, still look like they are wearing mutant stingrays on their heads. I don't know if I can call what the Yellow Ranger has on her helmet a Saber-toothed tiger to be frank. |
I called Marvel influence.
|
I like them but they could be better without the jewel in the center

But the costumes as generic as they are will be the least of this movie's problems. |
They look like a cross between Ryan Reynolds-as-Green Lantern and the early 90's American productions of the Guyver, which have been lampooned as something too in line with PR. I could say they will fail, but that is what every fan will say about any live-action movie franchises: the long-timers hate them, while the general public looks for escapism and applauds them. Any condemnation is, quite frankly, to be expected. For example, G1 Megatron from Transformers changed into a Walther P-38 while the first live movie entry had him as an alien jet (granted this is a separate franchise with multiple interpretations of Megatron, but you get my point). Another bone of contention regarding cosmetic changes was Wes Craven's Scream and the difference between the mask of that Ghostface and the one in the MTV Scream. They made it different intentionally, and initially doubts about the show were softened with the somewhat surprising result (again, off-base, but it serves the point of an "example"). I reserve the rest until we see the new suits in action.

No offense but, is gonna be another Fantastic Four.

This movie has the entertainment world buzzing, a high-profile actress as the villain in Elizabeth Banks (which wouldn't be happening if she were a no-name Japanese actress like some folks wanted) and slow-but-hyped reveals like the suits. Although we can safely say that reactions have been mixed, it has the fan base talking and excited...which is much more than can be said of FF4. |
