Ohranger from Shout! Factory in November
 

Just announced from Shout! on their stream.

Oh sweet juicy Fruit God Kota we are actually breaching the MMPR block!

Let's just hope it sells well enough to get us Carranger.

Very surprise this news since it's still very early. However very cool that more Sentai DVD's on the way. Meanwhile some fan subbers are probably mad about it.

Christ, it just dawned on me that I should hop to downloading Ohranger since I don't got money for it :lol

What? No way are the fansubbers going to be mad about it. Have you not seen how happy they get at this stuff getting a proper release?

The only people who will be mad are those who aren't prepared to pay for it and now can't download it because the subs will be taken down.

So am I. I guess preorders were good enough for Shout!. Either that or they decided to just take their chance at Oh right away.

I know it's bad business as a company, but I hope they just plow through the Sentai releases, sales be damned. It's like, the nichest of niche markets, so after Zyuranger, I doubt sales will be as high as they'd like.

And it's really more of how I feel towards Ohranger. I plan on grabbing Kakuranger (...Eventually...) because I know I loved it.
But to drop $40 for a DVD that I might not even make through 5 episodes of? That's when I get a little more wishy washy and stingy with my money.

My thoughts, exactly. Hell, it saves hard drive space on my computer, so I'm not complaining! :lol I eagerly await Ohranger this November, and if we're lucky, maybe Carranger next spring!

I'm not a fan of Oh, as I could do without it, but I will support any Sentai series that comes in the US just so I can get the series I like the most. I will buy Oh in Nov, I will buy a copy to give away at a panel next year at some anime con, I will review it, and I will like it. Well, not like the series itself, but like everything else.

Hell, I will even buy Gosei, ToQ, and Nin if they came to the US.

Ohranger is not a very good series but I'm happy to see Shout!'s releases continuing.

I'd also love it if this Ohranger release included the OhVsKaku movie. And then GoGoV having the summer movie with Sieg.

I'd just love all the Vs and Summer movies to get released on the boxsets.

I guess it's cool that more Sentai are getting released. I haven't bought the other sets yet, nor do I think I will. Sure it might not be helping towards getting more official releases out, but considering how I haven't enjoyed toku in the past few months outside of Amazons doesn't make me excited for this release. Now don't get me wrong I'm sure Ohranger is good, but considering how toku has been recently it's pretty hard to get excited for this at all.

Do be a little fair. 90's and early 00's Toku is very different from current toku.

I'm not saying you have to buy or like Ohranger (I'm probably not :lol), but it is a bit of an unfair comparison.

Does anyone think O-T will get Timeranger done before Shout! gets around to that series?

Man, Shout is really doing this, aren't they? I wonder how far they'll go (fingers crossed for some Dekaranger dvds).

Pretty good news. I wonder if the mixed reception to Ohranger will have any sort of effect on sales. I still haven't gotten around to picking any of these sets up, but that's because I have so much else to watch that I just haven't been able to really justify it. I'll probably pick up Dairanger and Zyuranger sometime this summer.

I bet MFC are sitting there like "man, all that time we spent subbing it and a year later it gets an official release" haha.

I kind of hope not. I think it'd be cool to get a DVD release of a series that hasn't been fully subbed yet.

90s Sentai and today's Sentai are two different things.

The shows in the 90s had a great deal of build up to the mecha and big time weapons. The rangers had to earn their gear. They also had to learn to work as a team for the first bit of the show and each team did it differently.

If I was told I could only watch the series from the 90s over or be allowed to watch each series as it comes out once, I would choose the 90s series over the new stuff that I haven't seen.

Doubt it. If they are already doing Ohranger it could be that Kakuranger will determine if they do Carranger and Ohranger will determine if they do Mega.

That's just the nature of the beast. I've seen some anime series not get licensed until the final episode is airing in Japan, so fansubbers subbed the entire show for nothing and those who were watching the show were left angry because they spent all of that time watching it and didn't even get to see the ending.

Can't wait to pick this one up, I've heard some pretty mixed things about Oh, but I've been wanting to watch it for a bit.

Dude Ohranger is very different Sentai from what we have today. Back then you didn't have all these toys shit gimmick coming out every other week in the show. Sentai in the 90's and 00's were much much better then some of todays Super Sentai shows.


Give it a shot it a really dark Sentai. If you like how Amazons is then in some way Ohranger is like that.

Dark and Ohranger don't really seem to correlate considering the reason it's most famous is having to tonally shift before 10 episodes...

But to me it seem like one of the most dark Sentai out there. I know about the tonally shift but it was still dark after the change would you say?

Not having watched past the first 8 episodes (Simply due to it not being subbed at a rate that kept me interested), I really can't say.
It is serious from the beginning, I'm just citing that it's biggest claim to fame being it's infamous changes for a more lighthearted nature, is all.

Ah ok I understand I have watch all 48 episodes and I seen a ton of dark things in there.

It get really dark when the new emperor takes over and that's what made me see it for being dark.

I'm not sure how dark a show where the mecha play basketball together can be...

Isn't Ohranger infamous for his style/theme changes due in no small part to real-life terrorist attacks in Japan's subways via Sarin Gas? Something of a "Millennium-Worshiping" group?

With all this talk of them doing Carranger and Megaranger, what do you guys think are the chances of them doing Jetman?

I hope they do it at some point but I'm guessing they are going to do all the Power Ranger related seasons first and maybe then go back and do the older ones if we're lucky .

So if we do get Jetman it wont be for a long time but then again that's just what I think so who knows ?

Sarin Gas, while I have no genuine knowledge of it, is not kind to humans or animals. Don't they (Japan) have some concern of what happens? Ohranger took a hit, as has been mentioned before on Tokunation, because it paralleled too closely with those attacks! The dark tone was leveled-off and Sentai nearly saw its swan song because of it if not for Carranger.

You both are right.

However, what everyone is saying is that the tone of the show changes significantly after episode 8. Not everything stays goofy, as there are episodes that get dark (like the one with Momo's childhood friend that disappeared), but then you end up with things like a dancing Oh Blocker, Hysteria drop kicking Bacchushund, the rangers having to play keep away with go carts, and all of the antics of the missile dude. Oh, and don't forget the skunk episode. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

There are like 20 truly great episodes in that 48 episode run.

My biggest issue with the show though is how little they even bother to develop the ranger cast. They are all pretty much the same from start to finish. Even OhRed is barely developed. He was to Ohranger what Optimus Prime was to the original Transformers.

Japan does have some concern, as they basically keep watch over them, as well as put into place a few laws basically tailored towards them. But it is a little confusing as to why they haven't outright outlawed them. However, seeing as the original organization has since split into two, both operating under different names and both trying to sever their ties to their violent past, perhaps they're fine with letting them exist? I dunno. There's a couple articles you can read and they have, like, 3 different Wikipeida pages, if you want to learn more.

Back to the topic at hand, is there any particular reason for the Ohrangers' design?

They said their plans include the pre-Zyu seasons, and I think it's a safe bet that Jetman is the most likely of those to get a release. It's just a matter of when.

On the subject of the reception of Ohranger, it started off fairly dower, not too much mind you, still people in bright spandex. But it really does a fantastic job of showing how big a threat the villains are, I think it's one of the best opening episodes for Sentai.

But things did get a little too real with the plot having terrorists and all, and it was harming the reception of the show. There's a lot of stuff dealing with that, and I won't get into it too much, but to put it simply Ohranger gets a lot of talk for how much it damaged the franchise, but the reality is more in the middle. Sentai was having problems for a while, and Ohranger made it worse due to its subject mater which was bad enough as it was, but the timing exacerbated it because of the subway attacks and the Great Hanshin earthquake. The series tried to quickly work in a more light hearted tone, but suffered from constant rewrites, lack of focus and tonal whiplash- which of course made things worse.

Not to mention the writing was just downright dumb at times:

Ultimately it was extremely mixed and for the most part no one won with Ohranger. Well except Bandai.

As a disclaimer I should mention I have not seen all the episode of Ohranger, this is mainly recollections and observations on my part as well as various information I've gather over the years.

Well, for their visors, aside from the numbers, they're puns on the character's names. Hoshino has the kanji for Star, Maruo is a pun on maru (circle) etc. Now why they chose shapes, I have no idea. Supposedly they're supposed to be for various regions or ancient civilizations, but I've never been able to find anything about it.

Granted, the rangers themselves do represent ancient civilizations, as they get their powers from a lost civilization dating back to Pangaea(hence the gold bits). This is also seen when they pose and in some cases their zords. Red is Mesopotamian or Egypt(I think the pyramid is actually supposed to be a ziggurat of sorts), Green is Greece, Pink is Polynesian, Yellow is Japan, Blue is Egypt, Gold- and some people miss this one because of Pyramidder- Pangaea.

Ah, thanks. That does help with some parts. It just always kind of confused me about the whole "Ancient superpower" thing, but their helmet designs are shapes :lol
