Zyuohger Episode 17- "Extra Player, Enter!" Discussion
This weeks' Dethgalien has the power to turn people into playing cards. But unknown to all, Genis is holding a very special ace up his sleeve...
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
An alright episode, felt a little too fast on the side of the monster of the week, but ZyuOh TheWorld's debut was pretty awesome. Great gimmick, cool Ranger and I'm hoping he stays evil for the duration of the series like AbareKiller.
That being said, his fishing rod weapon is absolutely terrible, what were they thinking? |
Good episode. I liked the solution they came up with for the cards: simple but clever. TheWorld's debut was pretty good, too (after seeing him in action, though, I kinda want to just call him WaSaOo - I'm sure I can come up with a song for it if I really try). I do agree that the fishing rod weapon is silly, but now that we can see him in action he totally brings the NUCLEAR HEAT to the kayfabe of the Hulkomania and the face/heel turn because I can smell what Stone Cold said so and TheWorld is the Jake "The Snake" Roberts of Super Sentai (am I even remotely doing this right?).

Zyuoh The World's debut was solid. I loved it. He felt like an actual threat, and not the other rangers jobbing to make him look cool, which I enjoyed.
I think his weapon being a fishing pole is silly, but hey. He made it work. I enjoyed him out whipping Yamato. His display of powers was also pretty cool, though not surprising (I am a bit confused, though. I knew he'd have super strength and speed, but I assumed Rhino would give him the strength, not crocodile...What power does Rhino grant him, then?). In all. Pretty cool. The last 5 minutes of this episode pretty much eclipse the remaining 15. It's crazy :lol Yeah, seeing more of Sela's family is nice. She continues to be the only Zyuman to consistently give us insight on her backstory. Enjoyable. The MOTW was interesting, and his gimmick was kind of neat. Also, real talk. Yamato rocked those lines. Looked pretty badass. But, yeah. Zyuoh The World was awesome. He gave the rangers a nice ass kicking, as I hoped to see. I also liked that he wasn't just a raging monster, actually taunting them. If Bandai still made Sentai Figuarts, I'd totally be all over one for ZTW. |
Someone STOP THAT ZYUOHGER! His reign of terror have begun!
What a grand entrance from Evil Sixth Ranger! The World! I hope next week episode doesn't have The World go Brock Lesnar or Evolution Era Triple H on Yamato! Yamato will be in the world of pain! No pun intended I wonder if they going to do an arc with The World and Sela and even Yamato because both of them are only 2 that didn't get electrocuted and also this is a Sela-FOCUS episode! Remember MagiShine's Debut? That episode is also happens to be Urara-FOCUS EPISODE! It would be funny if once Misao is no longer brainwashed, He could developed a romantic relationship with Sela! :lolol I bet Leo will be super jealous at this! :lolol I'm not sure if The World will put Yamato hospitalized in Next Week's Episode since Abare Killer almost KILLED Ryouga to the point that his niece thought he was going to died! Jesus! That's not funny! don't being entertained of seeing a red ranger get attempt murder from Evil Sixth Ranger! Beware of The World...... You have been warned! |
That fishing rod.

I thought it was a good episode. Sela was pretty cool and it was to see some flashbacks.
As for The World... Well, too much CGI Attacks for my taste. I can't say the fight was lame... just not that impressive. For the fishing rod, it doesn't really bother me but... it look so... plastic lol. For the 3 forms, according to the scans: Quote:

I just hope Naoki can be saved from Genis quickly.

Decent episode. To be honest I liked the MOTW-plot more than TheWorld's debut. Because Trumpus was fun and the idea behind him was neat (although he heavily suffers from "I tell everyone my weakness right away"-syndrome).
I liked Selas part in this episode and the solution to the card problem was fun too. Zuyoh TheWorld... cool... I guess? He does nothing but taunt the Zyuohgers and showing off his gimmicks. Not very interesting. Also the way he always presses the button on his flashlight the second time with his upper leg is kinda silly. In fact, the whole "Changing forms with the flashlight"-thing is stupid. Why not flip up/down the mask manually like Yamato? And just use the flashlight for initial transformation and summoning the cubes like the Zyuohgers do it? And his fishing rod… I’m not against using a fishing rod as a weapon. Not after reading Hunter x Hunter. But the problem here is that all of it is done with CGI and once he goes into close combat the rubbery nature of the prop makes it look funny in a bad way. So yeah gimmick-wise TheWorld does not blow me away. Although admittedly the "All Beasts Unleashed"-thing is kinda awesome. Anyways, I hope his characterization makes him more interesting, his setup does indicate that it could be the case. |

You don't know how he went through! What if he feel being indirectly responsible of death of 3 Zyumans and tried to get away from Zyuohgers (Sans Yamato) because he didn't want them to suffer same fate as 3 zyumans! |

For starters, don't cramp his debut into the last 5 minutes of a MOTW-episode. Quote:

We're all excited for the World, but you've basically forged an entire story on him that might not even happen, based on a single scene... |
ZyuohTheWorld is pretty cool. I'm just curious to see how he'll join forces with the Zyuohgers. I hate how is back is striped though. It looks cool on the front with the three animals, but it looks really weird on the back. I wish they just kept it black.

Another pretty good episode. The MoTW plot was unique (unless it isn't, I'm not exactly a Sentai Expert), we got more Sela backstory, and The World's intro did make me want to see more of him in the future.
Though, I don't get why Sela didn't tell the kid outright about the cards. I feel it just caused unnecessary drama. And yes, the fishing pole/staff props did look ridiculous in action. Just flopping around all over the place, it somewhat took away from the action. I did at least figure out why it's a fishing pole, however. It seems like he's modeled after (and acts like) a hunter, specifically for sport, and his weapons seems to switch from a rifle (land/sky) to a fishing rod (water/ocean). Heck, I Googled "Big-Game Hunter" and the Wikipedia page for it lists many of the animals the Zyuohgers represent, including The World himself, as ones more commonly hunted. |
I think Sela didn't tell the boy because she didn't want to scare him even more in such a bad situation, so she instead tried to stall as they tried to come up with a plan.

Mario to the rescue. Simple solution to a simple problem.
Sela was the MVZ. We now know more about her than any other zyuman which is a good thing in my book. I have nothing against the use of a fishing rod as a weapon ever since I've seen Gon Freecs (Hunter X Hunter) but ZaWarudo's fishing rod looks so fake that I feel slightly disappointed by it. He is a little too gimmicky, that's all I'm saying. Although his overall design is quite good, even his All Beasts Unleashed form. I was half expecting KaixaBird to rescue the Zyuogers. Doesn't he have the sixth Cube? Are we going to have seven Zyuogers? I hope so. |

i wouldnt be surprised if it's that because it will make story more interesting and them accepting they cant go back and probably a twist in the story they'll probably be another cube meaning the Deathgalians probably have the other link cube. |
I just hope ZaWarudo will stay an antagonist for more than 2episodes in order to keep things interesting. Starninger was a bit disappointing int this regard in the previous serie.

The episode is super awesome, I would watch it all day :)

I'd love to be proved wrong, but Sentai rarely surprises, and that's the least-surprising path the production team could take. Then again, I didn't expect quite how dark the scene of The World being empowered was: three Zyumans hanged to death overhead? (I'm not ruling out that they'll turn out to be alive later, since this is Sentai.) This seemed to me to be an odd episode. I liked the gimmick for the monster of the week, and the whole bit with him and Nalia provided gave us a rare character moment for her. The plot was different enough from other Sentai I've seen that I felt the episode could stand on its own. In this sense, the introduction of The World felt rushed to me. I enjoyed the battle sequence, for the most part, but I'd've been happier to skip doing a monster of the week and just focus on him. That they rushed it like this suggests the character will initially be pretty thin, and I'm guessing he'll "turn good" very quickly. I watch the show with a friend, who lamented, "I don't think we're ever going to have a Sentai Gaim." I adored that show because I felt it both subverted the tropes of Rider shows and elevated the quality of the franchise for a year. With Gaim, I spent a year watching a Rider show in which I didn't know what was going to happen next. I very much want Sentai to do something similar, but I have no confidence that it will. Gaim was a show that was written in part for a slightly older audience than has been typical of recent Rider shows. Zyuohger and Ghost both strike me as aiming for a slightly younger audience. (Although Ghost seems to have been experimenting with slightly riskier stories lately.) I have to talk for a moment, though, about the toys. I can enjoy silly Sentai weapons, like Shinken Gold's fish swords, but The World's fishing rod is a little goofier than I can stomach. I think the show handled it as well as it possibly could've, but at the end of the day, they armed him with a fishing rod. I understand how it works thematically (fishing rod, spear, and gun are all appropriate to a hunter), but good GRIEF. My problem with the flashlight changer is slightly different: the show tried to come up with a cool way for him to activate it, but it's a clunky device, and I found the tapping it against his leg more distracting than cool. In each case - as it always the case with Sentai - the show has to integrate the toys. Heck, the whole battle sequence was basically, "Let's demonstrate how powerful and desirable the toys are." I get it, I really do - these shows are toy commercials as much as anything else - but I keep wanting a story from these shows, and what happens in that story is generally dictated by the toys. I expect The World to quickly become heroic because Bandai likely won't want to wait on demonstrating the mega-combination of all the Cube mecha. Zyuohger is the 40th Super Sentai, and many of the cool/easy things you can do with Sentai weapons have already been done. That's even more so when Sentai re-uses a theme, which is pretty much why we got Minecraft weapons and mecha this year. PLEX has done animals over and over and over. This, at least, is animals in a form we haven't seen before. A side effect, though, is that this stuff seems like it's grown goofier and goofier in a way I don't enjoy. I look back at the gimmicks of shows from ten or twenty years ago, and they just seem so dramatically much cooler than what we've gotten recently. I only discovered Sentai a few years ago, and I've watched nearly a dozen series in that time. I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should take a break. When my first response to the pretty-good introduction of a new, villainous senshi is tinged with this much pessimism... that's not good, is it? |
Loved Zyuoh TheWorld's debut.
I feel like it's happened at just the right time, too. I know it's tradition for a 6th Ranger to appear at around episode 17, but it feels like a shot in the arm the show needed now before it became too repetitive. Not to say I've disliked the show at any point, I've had fun watching it, but TheWorld shakes things up rather nicely. I hope he stays a villain for a decent stretch. I like that he does the helmet flip thing Yamato can do, but was hoping the other 4 would get other forms first. There's still time, but it'd be disappointing if red got ALL the cool shit yet again. I'm wondering what happens when he is defeated and sides with the Zyuohgers, though. We've not seen who he is, really. Part of me is thinking that it's not important now, but TheWorld's power will actually be inherited by Kaixabird, with the 6th Champion's Symbol being held by him. Thumbs up so far! |
