Kamen Rider Ghost Episode 48- "Gather! Chain Of Grief" Discussion
Alain leads a final desperate attack against his brother Adel. But will they finally be able to stop him???
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
On one hand I'm satisfied, on the other I'm disappointed by a few things.
Satisfied:
Disappointed:
Overall I still enjoyed this episode, though the disappointments do bog it down just a bit. |

When Takeru see Edith in Dark Ghost Form, Takeru think Argos is back.. Butafter that Takeru finaly know Edith as Dark Ghost.........
Hmm....real Makoto merged with his fake duplicant after real Makoto injured by Adel's attack.....looks interesting..... Hmm....so finally Adel realized his mistakes but he become berserk after possessed by Ganmaizer powers. Takeru in Ghost Mugen Damashii forced to kill Adel with Gangun Saber Blade mode..... Adel's death looks sad..... Oh...wait....so Ganma World has modern building like in Human World? In end of this episode Edith (Dark Ghost) defeated by Great Eye and Freya become Great Eyezer after she merged with Ganmaizers and Great Eye? Great Eyezer design was cool but I am little disappointment when they re-use Extremer costume for final boss.... Next Episode: Takeru and his friends final battle agains Great Eyezers and Takeru's remaining life is only 1 day. It seems Great Eyezer will be defeated by Ghost Ore Damashii and all 15 Heroic Souls. Also Kamen Rider Genm will be appear and he battle against Ganma.... |
Well that was pretty much fantastic.
I'm really not eager to see how Ex-Aid is awkwardly jammed into the last 2 episodes because Ghost is on the fast track to becoming my favorite Rider show period. Depending on how these next episodes go and we'll see but as it is I'm really feeling it. This baton-passing crap is getting a little out of hand though. For reference: Having an epilogue episode to Drive with Ghost in it: Fine. Shoehorning Ghost into a pointless scene in the actual finale to Drive: Bad! I could say a whole bunch about this episode but I think it'll get real rambly so let's just stick to a couple major thoughts. - I've talked a lot about how Ghost's greatest strength is its thematics and this episode really brought a whole bunch of stuff to a brilliant closure. - Seeing Takeru consumed by rage for a bit was great and a shining example of how his characterization is WAY more complex than just being a generically nice hero. - The way they handled Makoto's plotline was great and I'm glad they pulled another twist on the familiar forumla to clone plots like this. Last episode they had Fake!Makoto save Kanon in a way that assured everyone (including probably the viewer for a second) that he was the real one and in this episode they have Real!Makoto save Takeru in a way that assured the audience he's the fake one. It's some genuinely clever role-reversal. - I'm really glad Adel is actually dead because I think that really was the best way to do it. He gets his redemption but karma still catches up to him. Everybody's happy (including Adel!). |
Wha...huh? Since when is Kanon able to kill Ganma? Like what the shit? I know the commando are weak as balls, but that's just ridiculous. Takeru and Makoto letting Kanon tag along for no reason is just ridiculous overall. I know they needed to have her present for the Makoto storyline to work but it's still a lot of nonsense.
The Igor thing: also weird. Also....wow. Neat. Alain is wearing the Shiki patch. That's...some attention to detail. Anyway...episode was ok. Makoto stuff could have been worse. Adel stuff could have been better. So my "Ganma queen was Takeru's mom" shit-tier theory is pretty much dead in the water, but that still leaves her identity as this big old question mark on the series. I can't imagine they'll leave it unresolved, but there being only two episodes left...how and when are they gonna fit it in? Gonna be weird. |
I like some of the ideas they were going for here, but I think the execution could've been better.
Igor sacrificing himself because he was in love with Akari... what? That doesn't even remotely make sense. It really feels like the writers forgot how to kill off Igor, so they just crammed it in at the last minute (see also how Jalvert will probably die, assuming the show remembers he exists). I really wish they'd let Real Makoto die and let Nokoto assume his life. Much more interesting way to resolve that plot and really change the way the character works in the last two episodes and Movie War. Adel's repentance was both obvious and rushed. It could've worked if he'd been a more nuanced character, but he's so flat that the whole scene really didn't work all that well. And then he was immediately turned into a monster and had to be killed anyway. I'm not sure what the hell the point of all that was. It's like the show couldn't decide if Adel was going to be redeemed or destroyed, so they just split the difference and did both in rapid succession. It took me a second to realize that it was one of the twins floating in the air at the end. I deeply pity anyone who has been or will be watching Ghost with no knowledge of the web videos, because this only barely makes sense having seen those. Not sure what happened to the other one, but I also don't really care. I assume (s)he's hanging out with Jalvert and Headband Dude. |
Yeah this did next to nothing for me.
Taking Akari, Onari and Kanon into the Ganma World with them only served the purpose to have them react to all the stuff that was going on, which is fine I guess since you need Kanon to scream "Onichan!" 10 times or something, but I had to roll my eyes when both Onari and Kanon could kick Ganma ass all of a sudden. Like WTF. It's not even in a Dan Hibiki-kinda way where they hit stuff by accident, Kanon was beating the crap out of those Ganma. I know the troopers aren't the biggest threats ever, but still. And Igor… no, just no. The Makoto twin subplot still makes little to no sense to me, but the resolve was okay. But I too would’ve liked it more if the twin survived. Adel's resolve was the strongest thing about the episode (and the first time he felt like a character to me instead of a doll with sound effects actually) and in good old Ghost-fashion they threw it out of the window 2 minutes later. Yay. Also, why even have those web episode twins. I don’t get it. They were only standing around saying "Tenkuji Takeru is the key" a few episodes ago, which did nothing, now their fusion or whatever gets absorbed or...? Why even? They could've just had Adel inside the suit they ripped from the summer movie and it would've made no difference. And in the end they could've saved him instead of the shit which was going down in this episode. A small thing I noticed, did they forget about the reddish Ganma World light or did the budget run out? It's especially noticeable once they switch from the rooms they arrive in to the one where Adel almost kills Alain. So yeah, it's as I feared it would be, Ghost stays Ghost for the entirety of the late game. What a shame, I really hoped this show would get its shit together eventually. Now I'm absolutely ready for Dr. Rider. I really hope it’s good so that I can finally look forward to new episodes of an airing Rider show again. Quote:

So I just finished watching the ep, and I'll write something more well worded in the morning but for now 2 things
1. Igor isn't dead his eyecon shattered but his actual body is still out there somewhere 2. How did Igor get killed by a mook? Kanon was taking those out just before his death in the episode |
I am deeply conflicted by this episode. It had a few ideas that could've been used better which makes me even sadder that they're not used.
They could've killed off Makoto and replaced him with Nokoto. That would've been the more interesting option. They could've properly redeemed Adel although I don't know how that would've been possible. I don't think you can redeem someone who had committed patricide. The Ganmeisers could've used Edith as their final vessel for Kamen Rider Extremer. It would've been more poetic as well, what with the creations taking control of the creator. Just wake me up when September ends so that I can catch Videogame Doctorman. I think I've had enough of Supernatural Heroman. |

Also, I just realized the significance of Mugen holding the GanGun Saber in hammer mode in the preview. Really happy to see all of the special attacks get used. For a while I was under the impression Love Bomber was going to be Ghost's very own Bassha Fever. |
I don't know how to feel about this.
Once again, Alain comes across as the most interesting character in the entire show, so I liked that. Adel's redemption felt.....decent (more on that later). Uh....I don't know what else positive to say (not because the episode was that bad, but because great ideas were executed poorly), so I'll just continue on to cons. First off, this episode is exactly why I was worried about the VotW plots well past the point of when the show should be winding down. Everything felt super rushed. We suddenly start redeeming Adel even though for the entire past 47 episodes, we've seen very minimal actual conflict in him and considering his crimes, that's a pretty big flaw. Kaito did less than he did and even he had an established point of no return. It took Alain several freakin' episodes to move over to the side of good, but Adel, who is ten times worse, goes from evil to good in like 5 minutes? IDC if Takeru has the ability to "connect" with people, that's ridiculous, considering everybody's been screaming in his ear the exact same thing Takeru just said for like the past 15 episodes and he just totally fucked off. Igor...once again, rushed. Literally nothing about him at all would lead me to believe he was in love with Akari or that he had any redeeming qualities whatsoever. This moment would make a lot more sense if it was Javel sacrificing his life for Onari (btw, Igor "dying" to a standard mook is freaking stupid. Even Kanon, the most useless character on the entire cast was taking down Ganma fodder with no problem). And speaking of which, where IS Javel and Mr. Kaijin Rider throughout all of this? Did the show forget they were a thing? So was the whole Fake Makoto plot just an excuse to include a fake-out death to make the finale seem more meaningful? I mean jeez, how many fake-out deaths has this series had? Feels like they've had more than the past few seasons combined and these moments are especially meaningless when Makoto just dies and Fakoto shows up like a few seconds later going "Nvm guys, I can save him" and just does it. I mean, earlier in the show, at least when they did these fake-out deaths they let them marinate for an episode or so. Here, we don't even 5 minutes of dead Makoto. And I've never watched the web series so I have no clue what the fuck is going on with Frey and Freya or what their importance to the plot even is. Way to alienate viewers who haven't seen any of that stuff. Alain was great as always though and that Adel moment would have been good if they gave us more setup but they didn't so...eh. Like everyone else, I patiently await Tamagotchi Rider. |

That being said, those videos were free on Youtube, so it's not like they're making you go buy a DVD or something just to get the full plot. |

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally with you on this. I don't know what they were thinking with having these guys turn up in the show with no explanation and I get the feeling the last 2 episodes won't clear anything up. Even Gramps as Dark Ghost these past two weeks felt more explained, honestly. Or at least it amounted to something and was funny. I really hope they knock this stuff off for Ex-Aid. Treating the TV shows as being 100% canon with anything but themselves never seems to go well. Anyone remember Foundation X? |
Either Takeru's mom is revealed in the 2 episode or in the crossover. I want it known!
|
This episode is so confusing especially the whole Makoto scene
I couldn't tell who was Real Makoto! The one who is about to dying or the one that fused with the dying Makoto Kamen Rider Ghost is so confusing mess! Takuro Fukuda doesn't know what the direction he want for Ghost! This show was way disappointed than Drive! I am disappointed that Ganma are just a bunch of humans that went to alternate dimensions! Toei! You could have them being demons or ghosts! Oh my god! This is all Kamen Rider Wizard over again! I hate confusing storyline! I hope Ex-Aid will have less confusing storyline than this |

Honestly, I have a REALLY hard time giving grades to these last few Episodes....I guess this one was....INTERESTING I guess?
First off, the heck is with Kanon being able to take out Ganma grunts with mere palm taps...? C'MON NOW...At first when I saw this, I wanted to believe she possibly got some sort of combat training from Makoto or the other Ganma when living there....then I remembered how much she's been the damsel in distress this entire show. XD Second, Igor sacrificing himself for Akari....WHAT EVEN. NO. Just....NO. Did they really just off Igor in one of the most random ways, just to get him outta the way since they're running low on Episodes?!! I was hoping for some epic clash with Akari, where it's possibly even Akari herself that takes Igor down, but NOOOOOOO.... Third, the Makoto Clone subplot......THIS is where the "interesting" thing kicks in. It fascinates me how the Makoto Clone has now adapted Makoto's feelings & resolve, and became a good person, to the point where it sacrificed itself to heal the real one. Like someone else said, it would've been an interesting ending if the real Makoto died & the Makoto Clone truly had to step in the shoes of the original. But oh well. One thing that I think not many people caught though was, did anyone else notice the way the real Makoto was concerned for Kanon.....while the Makoto Clone was concerned for ALIA?!! Now, this isn't totally out of nowhere since Makoto has before shown care for Alia, but now I wonder why the Clone had her in interest.....which ties into the FLAW OF THIS SITUATION: WHY DIDN'T THEY FLESH OUT THIS SUBPLOT?!! I said this before, and I'll say it again: it's STILL not clear on just what the Makoto Clone is & why the Ganmaizers made it. My guess is they were using it to observe emotions, since that's what they somewhat show interest in, but....I mean, then why did it act like it did when first introduced, where it just kept challenging Makoto to battle? It's just weird, and not properly explained. Fourth, Alain's confrontation with his brother. GOOD STUFF. Probably the only honest good part of this Episode. Fifth, Takeru flipping Adel to good.....Well, lemme first start off with the good: The 15 Heroic Eyecons vs. the Ganmaizers was short but EPIC....Now for something INTERESTING. One thing to note is another thing I think alot of people probably overlooked: I know people will see Takeru hugging Adel & making him remember his past w/ his father as corny & a completely random ability, and not gonna lie I did too when I first saw it, but....after thinking a bit, it's actually not quite as random as I originally thought. If you guys remember, Takeru has been doing this since the first few Episodes. Now, of course, HOW he's doing it is still a mystery, but I don't think it's quite a deus ex machina, because remember, the Ganmaizers have been commenting on how Takeru is "evolving" into something. Takeru's ability to do Redeeming Hug no Jutsu might have something to do with what is soul is transforming into. ......But yea, Takeru converting Adel like this was LAME. Not to mention he frickin ONE-SHOT Adel at the end, instead of it being a grand fight to at least redeem the rushed conversion.....SIGH.... |

Opinion time! I’ve been fairly quiet about my thoughts on Ghost for the last few months (unless you count my intermittent jabs at it on Twitter), but with the show about to wrap up I think I’m finally at a point where I can lay my thoughts out properly. Anyway, this episode in particular:
- I love movie/special tie-in material as much as the next person, but when things are as shoehorned in as Ghost has done it why even bother? The inexplicable Pink Necrom and Dark Ghost appearances were pointless, especially if the “joke” of having Dark Ghost appear was to have Edith say “it’s me” over and over to Takeru. The Frey/Freya stuff is even worse, because they didn’t even make sense in their own specials let alone here. The sad thing is that the one bit of movie plot I WOULD like to see carried over has been cast aside. Say what you want about Takeru’s father’s death in Movie War Genesis, but that scene has far more heart to it than “Oh hey Adel did it”. - Unlike a lot here it seems I don’t really have a problem with Igor suddenly turning out to be in love with Akari, I think the show was just really clumsy in its delivery of it. I could buy Igor showing admiration towards her that hints at something more, just not “yeah its love” right away. - Alain’s undoubtedly been the most endearing character on the show for me, and he really shined during his fight scene with Adel. - Moving on from that, Adel’s redemption made thematic sense but again was far too rushed and/or ham-fisted. My bigger issue there was how it went from a touching family scene to Takeru telling the soon-to-be-dead Adel how his actions were unforgivable. That speech just really didn’t mesh with what was going on even if I do agree with him. - The Makoto clone plotline came to a decent enough end for something that really felt like it was only there to give Specter something to do. This show has pushed the fake-out deaths way over the limit though. - Oh hey it’s Kamen Rider Extremer. Is that going to get a poorly done movie throwback too or just be conveniently ignored? Every week I come into these threads and read each post, and often I find myself in agreement with Fish Sandwich’s assessment of the show’s overall themes and bigger picture. My problem is that I feel like the show utterly fails on a week-by-week basis, and when broken down into components fails from jumping from thing to thing with only the smallest of explanations to carry it along. It’s good that there’s a bigger picture (one that only really centres on a handful of characters I guess, but its there), but if I can’t enjoy things episodically than how am I supposed to appreciate that? Kamen Rider Ghost is undoubtedly the worst Rider show I’ve seen, but I don’t consider it completely without redemption. I feel like the writers knew exactly what story they wanted to tell, they just had absolutely no idea how to go about it. |

Of course, I also thought the stuff with Adel was built up perfectly fine throughout the show (especially after Mugen debuted), so I guess I'm just crazy. Quote:

So I'll just say the bad stuff to get it all out of the way now.
What was the point of Narita? Shibuya was at least important enough to get an Arc with his mother. But what about Narita? what's his deal? Does he have a deal? Shame we'll never find out. Speaking of things that we'll never find out. What happened to the Takeru's Mom Sub-sub-sub-sub-subplot? What was the point of all that? Eveyyone else has pointed out the huge problem with Igor sacrificing himself for Akari, so I'm just gonna move on. What was the point of having Akari and Onari saying they would stop Takeru from killing Adel, if Alain was the one to actually yell at Takeru to stop? Did they really need to insert the big bad for the Ex-Aid Crossover two-parter, at the tail end of the final episode?! They could've waited till next week to have Great Eyezer (It's such a repaint of Extremer that it even kept Extremer's "-er" at the end it's freaking name) to show-up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ With that out of the way. The rest of this episode was actually pretty good. It kept to it's core message, it had good music, it managed to have Adel get his redemption while still punishing him for all he did. It even manages to reflect the series as a whole: Good but flawed execution. Ultimately what makes this show either bad or good ultimately depends on whether you think those flaws outweigh the good parts or vice versa. |

He's reassuring Adel that even though he's a piece of crap, his family doesn't care. Quote:

Maybe watch Den-O though. |

Alternate example: I enjoy Decade and have fun with each episode but its overall story is a mess. To me Ghost is the opposite of that. |

I get what you're saying now though. Fair enough if that's how you feel. |

Really the "crossover" next time is going to amount to Kamen Rider Genmu showing up and wrecking stuff up with his BMX Bike. It's basically the equivalent of Ghost showing up in a dream-like state to Shinnosuke after his final battle. Just instead we've got Genmu crashing the finale for reals. |
I feel like this episode would've been epic if it had more backup in the episodes before it. I felt NOTHING when anything happened. Like what people said about Igor's sacrifice, there was nothing hinting at love before and the writers just lazily shoehorned it in. It just needs more substance from the rest of the season. Also, is it bad the only thing I'm looking forward to in the BIG climax next episode is the return of the Ore Damashii? Also Gramps saying that there's a rhinoceros beatle on one of the mook's back immediately made me shout, "BLADE!"
|
WARNING THIS WILL BE A BIG POST
There were good things in this episode but even the things I liked were not pulled off that great. For example the fight between heroic eyecons and the ganmerizers, was only a little bit enjoyable for me because only a few ganmerizers had actual suits. Really wish they all had suits to make it as epic as it should of been instead of using CG. The Adel becoming good scene I tried to enjoy it but something just felt off, also how did Takeru show that scene of Edith and Adel's father? Did he somehow take the memory from Edith who was in the other room? Also were the others able to see what Takeru and Adel were seeing? I ask because Alia came in knowing whats happening and added her memory to this. Why is the Ganma world sky red? Did they ever say why yet? Because they showed it was blue when they first came to it but its always been shown red and that final fight with possessed Adel the sky was blue. Was that suppose to be some poor attempt as symbolism or did they just forgot that the scene takes place in the Ganma world? The Igor scene I am not actually bothered by it because I am just glad that he is gone for now. Why did Kanon thought it was a good idea for her to come when she has no weapon or experience? At least with Akari and Onari (also is the ari part of their names a joke or coincidence?) they had weapons and Onari probably has experience in fighting from the very little background they gave to him that they decide to instead give to the glasses monk that I keep forgetting actually has a name. I think you and a lot of other people here would be surprised if you rewatched Ghost from the start. The big reason it failed to click with so many of you is how messy the writing was, so watching it knowing what you do would really help fill in the blanks. It's more coherent than it might seem. |
Quote:
A) Despite all his shortcomings, the final villain I actually cared about just got Sadness Break'd by Takeru. B) I remember hearing about the Ex-Aid Crossover being a two part-er from episode 49-50. So I assumed this episode was supposed to be the finale. C) The magazines scans had Great Eyezer shown only fighting Ghost in Ore Form. And I thought that was because they we're gonna use it in the crossover. Edit* One last thing, I'd also like to point out because I just remembered. Shibuya was also important enough to get a full name, he's listed as: Shibuya Hachioji, while Narita is only listed as: Narita. |

Certainly things have gotten more complicated as they've gone on. The first eleven episodes were a fairly simple Dragonball plot but by the last third you have political intrigue with the Ganma, the Infinite Potential™ stuff really comes to the fore, the subplots pile up... That really is Ghost's big problem. If I'm not mistaken this was Takuro Fukuda's first show as head writer. I wouldn't call Ghost poorly paced but its plotting is really... weird, I guess? Different? |
I'm definitely going to miss this show. Next week is the finale followed by a farewell crossover episode. If Makoto died I was going to be really heartbroken. Specter was my favorite rider from this show.

Episode was pretty good. Probably on the bad half of finales I've seen, but still some salvagable stuff. Alain's relationship with his family shone through, and Fake!Spectre and Real!Spectre getting united as a single person was really the only way they could wrap up the subplot without one of them dying... which they did anyway. For a show about Ghosts, they like showing people getting killed of, don't they? Especially Makoto.
Igor falling in love... Nah. that's just Onari making stuff up. He saved them because he was still shocked from Adelification and Akari using Double Slap (It's Super Effective!), and did something stupid. He's still alive somewhere though, so you can guarantee he'll be back. Maybe as the movie villain. Also, as someone who has watched the Rider Specials... Yeah, nothing ties the twin into the great eye. It made no sense. At least they adressed the costume re-use for Dark Ghost, but here... nope. We don't even know if Takeru and Makoto still have the rider eyecons. Pointless characters are there because they couldn't think of anyone else to be used. Why they couldn't just have the Ganmeizers form Eyezer is a mystery for the ages. Also, Kanon as Pink Necrom when? She was more successful than Alia, after all :p |
I think the show would be a lot better if you watched it in large chunks. Once I caught up and had to wait for new episodes every week, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. But when I was in the process of catching up (I think the idol group episode was the first one to come out after I caught up) it was much more enjoyable.
