The best! Your favorite Super Sentai series?
Did some searches and there have been topics like this, but the latest one seems to be a couple years old, unless I missed it.
The best all around Super Sentai shows, ones that grabbed you and you recommend watching all the way through. Always fun to read people's favs. I've only dabbled in most Super Sentai series, but my top favs are: Gokaiger and Dekaranger. Liveman and Bioman look pretty epic based on the first couple episodes. Also curious about Megaranger, many others. So many to choose from! |
Gobusters for me, it had one of my favorite casts in the series.
|
Dairanger is hands down THE best! :lol
The only other show that comes close to topping it is Kakuranger, with Zyuranger, Gekiranger, and Carranger behind that one. |
Maskman and Ohranger are favorite ones.
|
Gingaman is by far and large my favorite. It isn't the best for sure, and there are plenty I love. But I adore Gingaman to the moon and back. Easily the most I ever got sucked into a Sentai.
|
Definitely Dekaranger. I'm really looking forward to the new movies coming out this year, even the creepy Sakamoto one that looks like bizarre Sentai-themed torture porn.
|
Gekiranger!
|
Gokaiger as well and Kyoryuger, those two series really sucked me into watching Super Sentai.

I'd suggest if you have the time, the patience, and can find them all. Watch it from the very beginning all the way up to present day. (skipping the ones you've already seen of course). But besides Gokaiger and Kyoryuger. Dairanger was one of my favorites too. I don't know why Saban didn't adapt all of the show into the second season of Power Rangers (especially the suits). |

I really do need to check out Dairanger. And thanks to the post pointing out upcoming Dekaranger movies! |
I've only seen like, one and a half of them, but definitely Go-Busters so far. Even if that's the half. It's really great.
|
I'm kind of surprised to see more than one person who is a big fan of Dekaranger. I mean, it's my favorite too, but I've only watched two Sentai, haha.
|
Go busters still this very day.
|
Carrangers because for a sentai that pokes fun at the series it is part of it has ridiculously well-designed suits, gear, and robots.
Most importantly they are the funniest team around still. |
This is a pretty cruel question for me. :lol
I'm kinda bad at picking favorites, but Go-Busters unquestionably sits at my #1 spot for a bunch of reasons. There's basically nothing about that show I don't deeply love from the bottom of my heart. If I tried to get into all of it this post would literally never end. Other than that, I've ended up loving pretty much every one of the Sentai I've seen so far, and think they've all got their qualities. The ones that tend to hover vaguely around the top for me are: - Go-Onger for being so impossibly, aggressively bubbly. It's like an antidepressant in television form. Full of energy, with tons of "subtle" little touches and details contributing to the atmosphere, like the fruity narration during mecha combinations or the team flipping over the Super Sentai logo in the opening. Just a super fun watch from start to finish. I always love when Toku shows treat their toys as more than just pointless gear too, so naturally I adore the Engines. The whole show just really clicked with me overall, though it's definitely not for everyone. Also the theme song is amazing. - Megaranger. I'm still not quite finished with it, but unless the final stretch of episodes is inexplicably horrible, it's going to be way up there. It hits on pretty much everything awesome about Sentai. A great mix of comedy and drama with a likable cast of characters (including one of the best mentors in the franchise), not to mention some great mecha action. Also the theme song is amazing. - Gekiranger, which I'm tempted to call hands down the overall best Sentai I've seen so far. It's a truly wonderful series. It'd be quicker to list things I feel didn't work in it than things that did. I'll do it right now. Ready? Nothing. See? That was pretty quick, huh? Also the theme song is amazing. Beyond that it gets even more vague. Gokaiger doesn't mean as much to me as it does to some people. but it's undeniably excellent and made with a real passion for the franchise. Kyoryuger was some of the most fun I've ever had watching Toku, and a rock solid show, but much like Gokiager I don't find myself looking back on it as frequently as some of the other Sentai I've seen. ToQger ended up really striking a chord with me after a relatively weak first quarter. Ninninger had a spectacular cast of heroes that made up for its flaws in my opinion. Zyuohger had charm and heart in abundance, and over a month later I'm still kind of sad it's done. I'm honestly still debating with myself whether or not it deserves to be up with Geki and the like rather than grouped here. Magiranger won me over hard after thinking it was kind of dumb for a few episodes (it turned out to be quite smart), and Carranger was as brilliant as Gekiranger in its own way. So yeah, if you can't tell from that rambling answer, I like Sentai a bit. :p I really don't think I've seen a show that qualifies as a total stinker yet, and they all offer something unique, which is why I have so much trouble pegging down favorites in any real order. I mostly just go through phases. If you're asking for recommendations though, it's Gekiranger all the way. I can't stress that enough. Go watch it. I'm probably overhyping it, and yet I also feel I'm not hyping it enough. Remember when I said Go-Onger isn't for everyone? Gekiranger is for everyone. |
I have a hard time picking anything except Shinkenger but it was my first and my view may be colored by that. I just finished Gokaiger and adored it but I also really like Dairanger and Liveman and Geki was very good and, and and.
I know what the OP means, I was actually thinking that we need a major poll not just of each series but maybe the 8-10 key elements - the Red (or leader), the other rangers, the extra rangers, the lead bad, the generals, the mooks, the theme, the mechs maybe even rate the final arc. It would be really interesting to see since I know of a couple where the villains were great but maybe the mechs & red not so much and then may be see if there was one series that rose above the rest in all categories or just had the highest average of all the categories and it would probably be something none of us are thinking of. |
I only listed Carranger cause majority of the posts seem to be listing only one team per person when I was posting. :)
Honestly Gokaiger will win them all probably but I am looking at this strictly from a fan's POV so I just picked Carranger. It was either Carranger or Megaranger but for this one I will stick to Carranger. Besides, which team can say they were baked into a pizza and lived to see another day? :lolol |
Jetman is the best, all day every day. Its bold plotting, compelling characters, strong interpersonal drama, terrifying-yet-sympathetic villains, over-the-top absurd monsters of the week, and constantly escalating stakes make it far superior to any of the other 18 sentai show I've seen. YMMV, but to me, Jetman is absolutely peerless in the pantheon of Super Sentai.
Kakuranger, Dairanger, Gokaiger, and Gekiranger round out my top-5. |
I'm not dissing your love of Jetman, but is sympathetic really an apt term to describe the villains?
Radiguet is legit insane, and his one sympathetic moment (Where he thought he was human) was undone in the same episode, Tran is a kid bullied by the other villains to the point where he aged himself up and then just kind of started kicking everyone else around (He really felt like more of a dick than even Radiguet when he was Tranza), and Grey only really started even having any characteristics during the tail end of the series... |
Quote:
Tran is a spoiled brat, but his bullying and desire to be taken seriously engendered some sympathy in me. But ultimately, he falls into the terrifying camp with Radiguet. Maybe a better word than sympathetic would have been "complex?" I dunno. |
I skipped Maria because she was actually sympathetic, but she's only 1/4th of the villain roster :lol
I guess when Tran was a child, he could be seen in a more sympathetic light, though. As for Grey, I guess because his feelings for Maria kind of just appeared out of the blue around the end, I didn't really see him as deep or complex. |
Quote:
Honestly, though, I even have a little bit of sympathy for Radiguet? Just because he tries so freaking hard, is so devastated after every failure, and actually works to improve himself (a lot like a tremendously less noble Rio, tbh). Sure, he's a psychopathic monster, but he's also a little pathetic, which endears him to me slightly. (Certainly more than you run-of-the-mill Baranoias, Zangyacks, and Underground Empire Tubes.) I mean, obviously you don't have to find them sympathetic. But I do, and I think my feelings are pretty grounded in the series' text. Quote:

Yeah, I'm with Matrix on this one, tragic is no where near what I would describe for Vyram. I love the show and the villains, but the only moment I could really say was tragic was when Radiguet was turned into a human. Of course, it's all ruined when he just randomly kills that girl and is back to being pure evil just because the show needed to get back to status quo by the end of the episode for the next episode writer.

It's a tie between Kakuranger and Shinkenger for me. Hurricaneger was great too.

You heard it from the man who basically loves every Sentai to exist, calling Gekiranger, hands down, the best series~ |
Goseiger, but I'm generally in for some more light-hearted and fun stuff, like Toqger, Kyoryuger, Ninninger and so on.
I think what all of these have in common is that they have a very happy-go-lucky cast and some very fluffy episodes, but they can go very serious when they have to. I also like teams that feel like family in a way, blood-related or not and I think those seasons sure have that. But then again, I enjoy most Sentai I watched, so I can have fun with pretty much anything. |
I usually prefer serious sentai and would watch the old ones before I was born like liveman, jetman, and dairanger for strong villains. Gekiranger was pretty good in this aspect. For sentai in the last decade, I think dekaranger, magiranger, and shinkenger are pretty decent. Gokaiger is just good for fan service. I'm fond of gobuster and toqger too despite people dislike their seriousness and designs.
